About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Overcast Sky, Wardrobe Decision Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on September 28, 2018 by Rick AnkrumSeptember 28, 2018

It’s a good thing I didn’t take any rest stops on today’s bike ride. Just a few minutes after I finished the ride at 2:07 pm it began to rain lightly, heavy enough to soak me while riding. I wasn’t in a big hurry to start the ride because the temperature was in the low 70’s. When it got to 77 degrees I figured I better ride or take a chance of getting caught by a late afternoon shower that might come by. So I rolled out at 11:36 am to ride the “New Caney – Tavola – Valley Ranch” route. I wanted to ride more than 30 miles and actually biked 34.6 miles putting my total for September at 738.49 miles, 38.49 miles over my goal.

As I got ready to ride I went back and forth on whether to wear a long sleeve jersey or not. In the final decision I wore a short sleeve jersey and was comfortable after about 3 miles and warmed up. My hope was the temperature would go up like the forecast called for as the bike ride progressed. Weather during the bike ride: start 77 (86% humidity), overcast with haze, wind 6 mph. Finish 80 (85% humidity), overcast, wind E 4 mph. It appears the weather pattern is getting to where I need to make wardrobe decisions before bicycling. I prefer the weather being hot and no need to make that choice.

The reason for no rest stop was the overcast sky and temperature didn’t get hot enough that I needed to refill my water bottle which lasted the whole ride.

Wind conditions were favorable in almost any direction during the bike ride and I built up my average speed to 14.3 mph and kept it there until I rode back into Kingwood and hit the 32 mile point. By then I was slowing down for traffic, stops signs and greenbelt trails. I kept an eye on the sky as I rode in case a rain cloud was nearby.

Saturday weather forecast shows rain so I may not bike.

A Real Cool Front, Mileage Goal Accomplished Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on September 27, 2018 by Rick AnkrumSeptember 27, 2018

Two points about today’s bike ride: the temperature and reaching my mileage goal for September.

When I got up this morning the temperature was 69 and by the time I was ready to leave 10:30 am it was 72. At first I wasn’t going to wear a long sleeve jersey based on my short walk to get the newspaper earlier but sanity prevailed and I wore a long sleeve jersey under a University of Cincinnati Bearcats short sleeve jersey. I was glad because biking at 15 to 20 mph is cooler than walking at 3 mph to get the newspaper.

Due to a time constraint I chose the “Atascocita – Walden – E. Lake Houston Parkway” route and biked 29.47 miles which put September mileage at 703.89 miles, exceeding my goal by 3.89 miles. Hopefully with 3 potential biking days left I can add to that.

Weather screenshots at the beginning and end of the bike ride. This is the first time since spring I needed the two jersey setup.

The overcast sky kept the sun from warming me up but pedaling the bike made up for that most of the ride.

Friday will be warmer and I will not have the time constraint like today.
