About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Double Digit Miles Left Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on September 24, 2018 by Rick AnkrumSeptember 24, 2018

With one week left in September the pressure to reach my goal drove my selection of today’s route; “SR242 – Old Houston Rd – FM1314”. I biked 45.31 miles bringing me within 88 miles of the 700 mile goal. This seems to be close but with the unpredictable weather the margin of error remains.

Rolling out at 11:05 am was a little later than I planned. The delay stemmed from a computer problem where a program would not open due to something that Windows 10 did in an update. Tracking down the solution and then getting the problem fixed took too long. By then the weather warmed up some from the 69 degrees I saw when I got up. It feels like fall is not too far away. Weather during the bike ride: start 85 (66% humidity), a few clouds, wind W 5 mph. Finish 87 (61% humidity), partly cloudy, wind S 7 mph. With the temperature below 90 degrees I was comfortable only stopping once during a ride this long and time of the day. I stopped at the Shell station at FM 1485 and SH 242 long enough to refill my water bottle but the rest stop was later at the Circle K/Valero station on FM 1314 at Sorters Road. The ride summary at the Circle K.

Wahoo Summary Coircle K Sorters Rd

Sitting on a bag of deer corn outside the store I ate a Clif Bar, drank cold water and check emails. This took about 20 minutes and after refilling the water bottle for the 12 miles to the finish I set out.

Wind wasn’t much of an issue on FM 1314 riding SE but when I turned onto Old Sorters Road I pedaled harder to overcome the headwind. A couple of places are out in the open exposing me to the light wind but I maintained my overall average speed at 14.7 mph all the way back into Kingwood until the 41 mile mark when the starting and stopping slowed me down. I finished the bike ride at 2:37 pm in front of the schools dismissal times.

The weather changes on Tuesday with the chance of rain returning but not high enough to interfere with biking, I hope.

Sunshine Finally, Tight Shorts Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on September 23, 2018 by Rick AnkrumSeptember 23, 2018

The sun beckoned me to ride today after staying inside yesterday due to rain. Other people braved the rain according to their activities on Strava.com but not me. After riding in the rain twice this week I opted for the indoors watching University of Cincinnati play Ohio University in a nail biter until the final 4 seconds.

Today I rode my other bike, Blue Norcross AL, for something different since I decided to ride the “Atascocita – Walden” route going 23.6 miles. This was enough to reach 207.42 miles for the week, the first week over 200 miles after falling short the previous two weeks. For September I am at 566.69 miles, 134 miles short of my goal for September. The bike ride started at 12:38 pm after I got home from church and finished at 2:32 pm.

Weather during the bike ride: start 82 (72% humidity), mostly cloudy, wind W 7 mph. Finish 84 (67% humidity), mostly cloudy, wind w 9 mph. At the start while I rode the greenbelt trail I got a hint of fall weather because a “cool” front moved through the area early this morning. My jersey wasn’t wet from perspiration yet and riding in the shade made me think of needing a long sleeve jersey. I am not ready for that yet.

With the sunshine returning I stopped at Kings Harbor on the way back into Kingwood and took these two photos. Seeing blue in the sky with some clouds was refreshing.

Bike Ride Kings Harbor
Bike Ride Kings Harbor-2

While bicycling through Walden I passed another cyclist twice. He was dressed in bright orange. Later as I rode north on W. Lake Houston Parkway in front of Tailwind Bicycles two other cyclists on mountain bikes circled in their parking lot.

Earlier in the week I removed a pair of Bellwether Endurance Gel shorts from my cycling wardrobe because a seam was rubbing on my skin causing pain. Today I added a new pair to replace that pair. Putting them on made me wonder if I gained weight because they were very tight; they are the same size. It appears the old shorts were not as elastic or stretched and maybe I need to replace the other pairs I am wearing too. I will think about that.

The cool front will keep the rain away for a few days giving me time to ride more on Monday at least to get closer to my September goal.

For all of those who answered my request to call 311 to tell San Antonio TCI that where they built the bicycle ramp was unacceptable. (Image 78.1) Well, they decided to do a band aid fix instead of an actual fix. (Image 78.2) For all your efforts, I would like to say thank you because from what I heard, they were planning on just leaving it the way it was. They widen the bike lane just a bit and left it. At some point in the future, they’ll have to come back and redo the ramp, but we won’t see that for a very long time, about the time when …
