About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Dodging Rain Becoming the Norm Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on September 21, 2018 by Rick AnkrumSeptember 21, 2018

Second day in a row I needed to wash the Canyon bike off after the bike ride. Today I rode about 2 miles before finding a place to get out of the light rain. Biking the “Kingwood – FM1485 – Kingwood” route I set out later than usual (11:24 am) after waiting for the streets to dry from an early morning light rain. The sky looked like rain was nearby but not where I was going. With threatening clouds in the vicinity I figured a short ride might be wise.

In my quest for miles to reach my September goal I bicycled 28.29 miles moving my total for September to 543.08 miles leaving 157 miles to get there. With rain in the forecast for the next couple of days it was important to ride today to get closer to the goal.

All went well on the way to FM 1485 in New Caney but at the u-turn and looking to the south I saw some gray clouds in the distance. Pedaling quicker I rode to Valley Ranch Parkway hoping to get closer to shelter if I needed it at the Grand Parkway underpass. Just before getting there I stopped and took these photos.

Bike Ride Valley Ranch
Bike Ride Valley Ranch-2

The first photo looks west over the fountains and the second photo to the south where the heavier clouds gathered. Optimistic that I could reach cover i set off to Porter riding south on Valley Ranch Parkway and then east on Azalea Blvd. back to the I-69/US59 service road. While I pedaled on Azalea Blvd. light rain began to fall. Speeding up some I made a quick right turn onto the service road to get to the Circle K Exxon at FM 1314 and shelter. The rain fell but not as heavy as yesterday and I pulled under the canopy before the rain increased. I sat down by a pump and wiped some of the water off of me with some paper towels. Waiting for the rain to stop I checked emails and downloaded the ride summary up to that point from Wahoo Fitness.

This is what it looked like at the Circle K Exxon while I waited for the rain to stop.

Bike Ride Porter Circle K Rain

The pickup in the photo was there to protect a mattress in the back of the truck.

After half an hour or more the rain slowed and I decided to continue south hoping the streets were dry at some point. By Kingwood Drive the streets dried off or never saw rain and I made the u-turn to get to Kings Manor and into Kingwood. The closer I got the finish point the drier the streets got. The humidity was heavy and sweat was just as bad as getting caught in the rain when I ended the bike ride at 2:16 pm.

Not long after washing the Canyon bike off I started hearing thunder and not too long after I was inside rain started but not very heavy. Not sure if biking will happen Saturday with more rain in the forecast.

Breaking in a New Jersey With Rain Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on September 20, 2018 by Rick AnkrumSeptember 20, 2018

For a change my timing bicycling in the potential rain worked out in my favor. I rode the “May Park Community Center – Huffman” route starting at 10:46 am. At the beginning the weather didn’t look too threatening but as I rode more to the south the sky gathered some dark clouds. But they were to the west and my route went to the east so I felt somewhat comfortable about not getting caught by rain.

With days in the month getting less I needed to ride at least 35+ miles to keep on a pace to reach my 700 mile goal for the month. Today’s ride came in at 40.44 miles so I accomplished that. This puts me at 514.79 miles for September or 74% of my goal. With rain in the forecast for the next 3 days biking might be difficult so each mile is important.

Every time the route pointed to the west I saw dark clouds and as I rode across Lake Houston to the east I started hearing distant thunder. Pressing on a few sprinkles hit me on Farilake Drive but not for long. At FM 2100 the route went north and as I biked I looked to the west to see more dark clouds but I figured they would not come to the east. So far so good. The ride on FM 1960 to the east stayed dry and as I made the turn around at the Liberty County line I again looked to the west to see the dark clouds coming closer.

On Willy Road workers laying asphalt blocked one lane but the flag man gave me the go ahead. Rather than putting down asphalt on the whole width of the road they put down patches in large sections. I hope it smooths out because it looked rough. Next I stopped at the May Community Center for water and a short rest. I took these photos.

Bike Ride May Center
Bike Ride May Center-2

The second photo shows some of the clouds in the west. Leaving the center I rode west on Wolf Road to FM 2100. This is where the timing comes into play. As I approached the traffic light I felt a few rain drops and as a precaution I went to the pumps at the Texaco station where a large canopy provides shelter. At first the rain didn’t increase but when I thought about riding on the it did. I decided to stay put and wait for the it to move through since it looked like it was coming from the south where I was headed. The Wahoo Elemnt ride summary when I stopped.

As I waited for the rain to let up or stop I took these photos.

Bike Ride FM2100 at Wolf Rd Rain
Bike Ride FM2100 at Wolf Rd Rain-2

I thought about resuming the ride a couple of times but the rain increased so I stayed put. I took the second picture because I retired from Sysco and the truck pulled in during the rain to deliver food for the station’s restaurant. I went over and talked with the driver who makes this stop on Thursdays. After an hour rain delay I got back on the Canyon bike and headed south on FM 2100 to Huffman where I stopped at the Chevron station for water and ice. On the way there the road was wet and muddy in places coating me and the Canyon. From the Chevron station riding west the road dried off some and by the time I was going through Atascocita Shores the streets were dry but the thunder was not too far away so I hurried to finish the ride and not get wetter.

Finishing at 2:54 pm, about an hour late, I washed the Canyon off and my shoes before going inside where the A/C felt like 40 degrees because I was soaked with sweat.

Lost in all of the wet and dirty biking was the new Primal Wear Torque jersey.
