About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Overheated Antique Car, Puffy Clouds Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on September 15, 2018 by Rick AnkrumSeptember 15, 2018

Not my typical Saturday bike ride start time today. I started the ride at 9:50 am after waiting for a man to arrive to purchase my Motobecane 700HT mountain bike. I haven’t rode it in over 7 months and didn’t know when I would. Since I bought the Blue Norcross AL bike the Motobecane hasn’t been necessary if I want to ride the Kingwood greenbelt trails. Craigs List helped the buyer and I connect.

Choosing the “Kingwood to Ramsey Road – Huffman” route I didn’t expect to see any other cyclists and that was almost the case except for two. One was on Atascocita Shores Drive south of FM 1960. I don’t think he saw me as he made a right turn onto a side street. The other biker passed me on Old Atascocita Road going west while I headed east.

After yesterday’s rain seeing the blue sky and warmer temperature was great. Weather during the bike ride: start 82 (83% humidity), partly cloudy, wind E 9 mph. Finish 91 (65% humidity), mostly cloudy, wind E 9 mph. Maybe we are getting several dry days as fall approaches next Friday. With the rain days I am just keeping up with miles to reach my 700 mile goal. Biking 37.22 miles today I am at 359.3 miles for the month, 51% of the goal.

While biking east on Old Atascocita Road towards Ramsey Road an antique car passed going in the same direction. I was hoping to get a photo but he was too quick. Watching the car drive away I wanted to see which direction he turned at Ramsey Road. The car stopped and waited several minutes before turning right. He went a short distance and backed up and into a pasture opening on the side of the road. When I got to Ramsey Road I saw the car was overheated and the driver was pouring water into the radiator. I rode up and stopped and we chatted. The car was a 1928 Ford. The owner said the cooling system was a free flow type which I think means no pressure . He recently bought it and told me he carries extra water for just this reason. He put the cap back on and got ready to drive and I did too. A photo of the car and driver. Later in the bike ride while I rode west over Lake Houston on FM 1960 he passed me again.

Bike Ride 1928 Ford

After turning around at Ramsey Road I biked west back to FM 2100 where I turned right to go to Huffman. As I rode west on Old Atascocita Road I stopped at one of the few houses on the east side of FM 2100 and took these photos. The clouds looked interesting and in the second photo there were a bunch of white birds that flew around the fence before settling back down when I took the photo.

Bike Ride Old Atascocita Road

Bike Ride Old Atascocita Road-2

I stopped at the Chevron station long enough to refill my water bottle before resuming the bike ride. Enjoying a nice tailwind I made good time on FM 1960 across the lake. Bicycling through Atascocita the wind continued helping. Biking north on W. Lake Houston Parkway took me back into Kingwood and I finished the bike ride at 12:47 pm.

Even though I have a couple of rain days this week I will rest on Sunday and bike on Monday. The Vuelta a Espana will be over and not delay my start.

For over a decade, BikeTexas staff have made the six-hour trip from our home base in Austin to Wichita Falls to attend one of the oldest and largest cycling events in the country: the Hotter’N Hell 100. Now in its 37th year, the event draws riders from across the country and around the world. And for nearly as long as we’ve been going there, HH100 has been a BikeTexas Event Member, making a generous donation to bike advocacy efforts in Texas.

This year, BikeTexas staffer Jay Conlon made his first trip to HH100 with us. Here’s his story: …

Bastrop’s $615,000 River Loop Trail awarded CAMPO, nonprofit funding

By Brandon Mulder | www.statesman.com

Former Bastrop Mayor Ken Kesselus remembers the days when Texas 21 wasn’t a highly trafficked thoroughfare, and kids would bike along the roadway to swim at the Bastrop State Park pool.

It was the late 1950s and 1960s in Bastrop, before the highway department built Texas 71 on the city’s southern edge. The pool at the state park was the community’s only public pool. …

Kevin Marshall was 25 years old when his life was changed by a bicycle.

It was 2008, and Marshall had a comfortable life working at a car dealership in Denton. But he said he did not feel like he was living his life to the fullest. So he quit his job and bought a bike.

“I personally hadn’t ridden a bike in a really long time, and when I got a bike it gave me a freedom and a great feeling,” Marshall said. “You know when you’re outdoors you just get a good feeling? Like, this is where we were intended to be — outdoors with the trees, with the breeze on my face.” …

New Jersey Day Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on September 13, 2018 by Rick AnkrumSeptember 13, 2018

A few spots of blue sky among the many clouds at the beginning of the bike ride but that is better than yesterday. I rode to the north following the “Kingwood – SH 242 – Kingwood” route for 34.78 miles. September is now at 322.05 miles. I rode out the driveway at 11:31 am, a little later than I wanted due to watching stage 18 of the Vuelta a Espana where the breakaway stayed away and one of the two remaining riders won. Well worth watching as I waited for the clouds to settle down some.

Weather during the bike ride: start 86 (74# humidity), mostly cloudy, wind NE 13 mph. Finish 84 (78% humidity), overcast and breezy, wind E 23 mph gusts 27 mph. I didn’t realize how windy it was while biking north to SH 242 because of the trees to the right of the road but when I turned to the east along the way the watts shot up to around 400 to maintain my speed into the wind. The ride back to the south was with the wind mostly except when I returned to the south service road from Valley Ranch Parkway. The wind was a brute as the watts went up and the speed went down. Back on the I-69/US59 service road bicycling south the wind was from my left rear quarter and mostly helped me.

Some people have new bike days but today I had a new jersey day. This week I got three new jerseys to replace some stained ones and today I wore one; the Primal Wear Flash Art. Today’s joke in the Houston Chronicle goes with a new jersey day: What does Delaware? A New Jersey.

New Primal Flash Art Jersey
New Primal Flash Art Jersey-2

New Primal Flash Art Jersey-3

I like the fit, fabric and wear of the Primal Wear jerseys and usually buy them.

Early in the ride I almost collided with another cyclist on the trail as I emerged from the underpass on Northpark Drive. I was carrying a large envelope on the way to mail it and my hands were not on the brake levers as they should be. It is rare to meet anyone, biker or walker, at that intersection but this cyclist was moving at a fast clip from y right as I made the turn onto the east bound trail. There is a large bush that blocks the line of sight and I slowed some before making the turn. Fortunately the biker swung wide to his right to avoid me. I dropped off the envelope about 2 miles later and felt a relief to be able to control the Canyon bike with both hands.

The rest of the bike ride went smoothly with a stop at the Circle K/Valero station at Northpark Drive to refill water and ice for the last 7 miles to the finish. Exiting the station and crossing Northpark to the curved access road I saw land being cleared for a new shopping center which will feature a HEB grocery store. So much for the traffic pattern when it opens next year. I rode on and finished the bike ride at 2:10 pm.

Rain is still an issue for the next few days so biking may be too.
