About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

August Highest Miles Month After Last Bike Ride of the Month

Texbiker.net Posted on August 31, 2018 by Rick AnkrumAugust 31, 2018

August biking came to a close with today’s ride on the “New Caney – Tavola – Valley Ranch” route. I biked 35.01 miles putting my August at 949.55 miles. This is the most miles in a month this year. See the summary below.

The ride started at 10:47 am, a little later than I planned because I watched stage 7 of the Vuelta a Espana finish rather than watch it later. As the bike ride began I was going to ride the route without any side streets to add miles but as I rode into Woodridge Forest I changed my mind and rode on a couple of streets I don’t normally see to add a couple of miles.

Weather during the ride: start 88 (69% humidity), partly cloudy, wind calm. Finish 93 (51% humidity), partly cloudy, wind E 7 mph. Some nice fluffy white clouds in the sky and none looked like rain. Wind wasn’t a problem but getting my average speed to 14 mph seemed to be more than I could do. Biking south from Roman Forest Blvd. the wind was from my left rear and I upped my speed but not enough to offset the lower speeds earlier in the ride.

Water stops at the Shell station on Roman Forest Blvd. and the Stripes at FM 1314. The temperature might be in the low 90’s but the heat doesn’t have the intensity of early August.

No other cyclists out on the route but a car with a rear rack and a bike passed me. Doesn’t count.

Back in Kingwood I added a couple of side streets to get a few tenths of a mile thinking of miles for the week. I am at 163.91 miles and Saturday I will need to ride 37 miles to hit 200 for the week and keep my string alive. Sunday will probably be a rest day to watch a tough stage 9 of the Vuelta a Espana.

Sudden Rain Downpour at The Bank Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on August 30, 2018 by Rick AnkrumAugust 30, 2018

A late start on today’s bike ride so I chose the “Atascocita – Walden – E. Lake Houston Parkway” route and biked 27.21 miles. It started at 11:54 am and finished at 2:09 pm. This puts August at 914.66 miles, less than miles from being the most miles in a month this year. With Friday’s bike ride, weather permitting, this should become the highest month this year.

Weather during the bike ride: start 90 (63% humidity), mostly cloudy, wind 6 mph. Finish 90 (62% humidity), partly cloudy, wind SE 18 mph. I have to explain that I made a rain stop at the Amegy Bank on W. Lake Houston Parkway on the way back. AS I exited Kingwood Greens the rain started and I raced to the drive through cover at the bank to avoid getting soaked though I was soaked from sweat anyway. The rain is cold and I don’t want to coat the Canyon bike in road grit from riding in the rain. I waited 5 to 10 minutes until the rain slowed before leaving. At Town Center, about 4/10’s of a mile away the streets were dry and stayed that all the way to the finish. After the bike ride I hosed the Canyon bike down to remove the dirt.

Stopping on FM 1960 over Lake Houston earlier in the ride the sky looked like rain to the south and east as seen in these two photos.

Bike Ride FM1960 Lake Houston

Looking to the southwest on the causeway

Bike Ride FM1960 Lake Houston

Looking to the southeast on the causeway

At E. Lake Houston Parkway where I turned around the clouds over Huffman looked like rain too.

Bike Ride FM1960 at E Lake Houston

Bike Ride FM1960 at E Lake Houston looking east

But I didn’t expect the rain to be a problem since I rode to the west. All the way back to W. Lake Houston Parkway through Atascocita Shores and Kings River rain wasn’t on my mind. Running in to in Kingwood Greens surprised me.

Riding around Town Center Park a few of the farmer’s market vendors tents stood waiting for the 3 o’clock opening. I wondered if the rain might visit them since it was so close but I don’t know since I rode on.

Friday I should ride earlier and the rain is less likely.
