About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Plans Broken, Other Bikers, Flat Tire Woes Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on August 25, 2018 by Rick AnkrumAugust 25, 2018

Sometimes plans don’t work out the way you expect. I didn’t start today’s bike ride quite as early as I want leaving at 8:22 am on the “Atascocita – Huffman – Walden” route. I wanted to ride at least 29 miles to get 200+ miles for the week. This part of the plan worked out with 32.58 miles setting the week at 204.5 miles. This is the seventh week in a row of 200+ miles. August now stands at 785.64 miles just 15 miles short of my 800 mile goal.

Weather during the bike ride:start 77 (92% humidity), a few clouds, wind calm. Finish 95 (55% humidity), partly cloudy, wind calm.

Leaving around 8 am on Saturday positions me on the east side of Lake Houston to see the Bike Barn riders returning from their loop. 22 minutes later means some riders have passed where I join their path at FM 1960 and Atascocita Shores Drive. This morning as I was standing at the traffic light at that intersection I saw bikers approaching from the east. Moving over to the grass on the left I took these photos. Everyone didn’t go to the Hotter’n Hell 100 in Wichita Falls.

Bike Ride FM1960
Bike Ride FM1960-2

When the light changed I walked across FM 1960 and waited on an opening in the traffic to ride east. Over the lake I saw a few cyclists and then a big group near the east side of the lake. I wondered if the group was the last ones but arriving on Fairlake Drive it wasn’t long before more bicyclists appeared.

Again I suspected that was all of the bikers but on Old Atascocita Road more came from the east.

Not expecting any more I rode east to FM 2100 but a couple of cyclists were east of FM 2100. I continued about a mile east to add to the ride distance. Almost at FM 2100 another cyclist passed going east and I made the turn north to Huffman. I stopped at the Huffman Chevron for water and ice before riding west. All was going well.

Near the west side of the lake I started think my rear tire was soft. I stopped at the traffic light to wait my turn. Riding south on Atascocita Shores Drive the soft tire seemed to get worse and I pulled into the park to check it out. It was almost flat. Sitting down on the curb in the shade I inspected the tire to see if I could find the cause. All I could find was a tiny piece of glass stuck in the tire that might have been bigger but worn down from riding. Removing the tube I pumped it up and found the leak, right between two patches from previous flats. Concerned that another patch wouldn’t work I got my spare tube out and put it in the tire, mounted the tire and starting pumping. Nothing happened, the tire didn’t inflate. Removing the tube I found a hole where the valve stem attaches to the tube. This can’t be patched so I was back to the original tube. Sanding the area where the hole was I applied glue. It only took a few seconds and the glue was dry because of the heat. I applied the patch, pressed it firmly and aired it up to check my work. Hanging the tube on the handlebars I walked to the pool to throw away the other tube. When I got back I was encouraged by the tube still holding air. Back in the tire and mounted I pumped it up. Thankfully the tire got firm and I put it back on the Canyon bike. This was 22 miles into the bike ride with 10 miles to go. Back on the bike I started riding through Walden across FM 1960 and into Atascocita. The tire felt hard when I went over bumps so I thought I would make it home without further problems.

Back in Kingwood I finished the ride at 11:39 am about 40 minutes later than planned. So much for plans.

With 200+ miles for the week Sunday will be a rest day. Monday I should surpass my August goal.

The Highs and Lows of Cycling the Fort Davis Scenic Loop

By Dan Oko | www.texasmonthly.com

The cottontail was on a suicide mission, hopping onto the pavement just as I tucked into my racer’s crouch on the steep downhill of Bear Mountain, in West Texas. I was the last in a three-man parade stretched along Texas Highway 166, the state’s highest public highway, near the end of our two-day, 76-mile ride on the Fort Davis Scenic Loop. Now either this bunny was going to be roadkill or I was going to skid out on the cattle guards spanning the highway. Somewhere below me, my companions, Dennis and Alan, were speeding ahead. I was trying my best to catch them before they reached the Chihuahuan Desert floor. …

I don't speak for @SWellCycle, but they to want you to wear a helmet. But they'll fail to to mention that @SWellCycle is the safest form of transportation in the world and 98% of users don't wear one. Last death of one was in NYC and the 🚌 driver purposely killed him.

— The aatblog.com (@BikeSanAntonio) August 24, 2018

Mandatory Helmet laws hurt 🚲 and will hurt companies like @limebike @SWellCycle @flyblueduck. Seattle is the only city that I know of that has one and their bike share went out of business because they require their customers to use one. Then @limebike came in and left a mess.

— The aatblog.com (@BikeSanAntonio) August 24, 2018

And one last thing @SBLpodcast, cyclist in the city want "Sec. 19-286. Driving or parking on sidewalks prohibited" either repealed or amended because people have gotten tickets for riding their bicycles on the sidewalk. Keep San Antonio Lame.

The Trees of Woodbranch Village Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on August 24, 2018 by Rick AnkrumAugust 24, 2018

While some cyclists are on their way to Wichita Falls for the Hotter’n Hell 100 I stayed home and rode the “Kingwood – SH 242 – Kingwood” route recording 35.26 miles. It was hot here but not yet to the 100 degree mark when I started at 10:01 am and finished at 12:42 pm. During the ride weather: start 88 (66% humidity), a few clouds, wind SW 7 mph. Finish 94 (50% humidity), partly cloudy, wind W 8 mph. In the shade at the start it even felt cooler but that didn’t last long once I was beyond the early miles.

I am closing in on my August goal with 753.1 miles with only 46.9 miles remaining. It will probably be Monday when I surpass the goal with Saturday’s bike ride being 30+ miles. The week’s total stands at 171.92 miles.

To add a couple of miles today I cycled through Tavola and then north on the side road that parallels the railroad tracks in Woodbranch. I took these photos about midway between Roman Forest Blvd. and the Woodbranch City Hall and Police Station.

Bike Ride Woodbranch Village Bike Ride Woodbranch Village-2

The first photo looks north and the second to the south. Traffic is light and homes facing the road are few. You wouldn’t guess the train tracks are 30 feet to the west.

Expecting the wind to extract extra energy on the ride south back to Kingwood I was surprised that it wasn’t so hard. I built my average speed up to 14.7 mph on the way back to Kingwood Drive. Two stops for water and ice: Mobil station in New Caney at FM 1485 and the Circle K/Valero at Northpark Drive. Each stop was just long enough to walk inside, fill the bottle and go back out to the Canyon bike.

PowerPod report: when the ride started I wasn’t sure how the PowerPod was going to work. After yesterday’s ride I connected the PP to the Isaac software to see what the profile looked like. The PP wireless was connected to all of the sensors so I had high hopes for today. But until 1.58 miles into the ride all I saw were two zeros on the Elemnt screen for watts from there on the watts appeared and seemed to be realistic. No more meddling with the PP except to download ride data once a week.

New TickrFit HR monitor continues to work perfectly.

Saturday I plan on biking early to catch the Bike Barn bikers and to get back home in time to watch the start of the Vuelta a Espana at 11 am.

Alkek Velodrome gets a lift from Lawson Craddock

Dale Robertson | www.houstonchronicle.com

A year after Harvey began drowning much of Houston, there will be a grand celebration at the Alkek Velodrome Friday night. As many as 500 are expected for a night of racing revelry and no small amount of relief at the bicycle track, whose inner bowl filled with eight feet of water and sludge during the storm, then needed three weeks to drain.

No surprise that, though. Originally built for the 1986 U.S. Olympic Festival, the Cullen Park venue was constructed smack in the middle of the …
