About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Street Books ATX Brings The Library To The Readers

By Rachel Taube | www.texasstandard.org

When you imagine a public library, you probably think of a building with aisles of books. Patrick Crowley had a different idea. He wanted to bring books to readers, not the other way around. And his library isn’t a building. It’s called Street Books ATX.

“The street library is a cargo bicycle that has a pullout drawer in it that basically contains paperback books,” Crowley says. …

NFL Legend Emmitt Smith Loves Cycling (And He’s a Total Power Geek)

By Gloria Liu | www.bicycling.com

Hall of Fame running back Emmitt Smith doesn’t run anymore. Not even around the block. “I’ve ran enough in my lifetime,” he says. Now the three-time Super Bowl champion proudly calls himself a cyclist, rides dawn patrol with his coworkers, and launched a fondo.

To find out what drew Smith into the saddle, Bicycling caught up with all-time rushing leader ahead of the Emmitt Smith Gran Fondo (join him on September 22). In its third …

Typical August Weather Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on August 14, 2018 by Rick AnkrumAugust 14, 2018

Today’s bike ride followed my “Atascocita – Walden – Huffman” route to the south and east. I started at 10:08 am after watching most of the Binck Bank Tour stage 2 ITT. Weather during the bike ride: start 88 (77% humidity), mostly cloudy, wind S 12 mph. Finish 90 (62% humidity), mostly cloudy, wind S 12 mph.

Home Weather Start
Home Weather Finish

Nothing out of the normal during the bike ride. I stopped at the Huffman Chevron for about 5 minutes while refilling my water bottle. Before that I waited for a very long train to cross FM 2100. While I was inside the store filling my water bottle a couple of the employees were saying it was too hot to ride but I said it was cooler than a couple of weeks ago when the temperature was in the upper 90’s and they agreed it was warmer then but still too hot to bike.

The mostly cloudy sky looked like some rain could form to the south but wasn’t a problem where I was. Wednesday’s forecast looks like a repeat of today. I will need to bike early due to an afternoon appointment.

I didn’t start road cycling until I was in my early 40s, and one of the first things that struck me was the passion, openness, friendliness and kindness I witnessed and experienced at my first road rally in 2012—The Weatherford, TX Peach Pedal. I met random strangers at the start line that are still friends to this day. I watched two women stop their ride to save kittens dumped on the side of the road. I was asked, by several riders, whether I was okay when I stopped on …

Not the Binck Bank Tour Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on August 13, 2018 by Rick AnkrumAugust 13, 2018

After watching stage 1 of the Binck Bank Tour from Belgium I got ready to ride with wheels down at 10:06 am. I didn’t ride on Sunday as planned but even if I had wanted to ride it rained as I got home from church. No rain problem for today’s bike ride which more than I can say for Binck Bank tour. It rained heavy for almost the whole stage until the last few kilometers.

Selecting the “New Caney – Roman Forest – Valley Ranch” route I biked 43.24 miles getting the week off to a good start. This improved August to 412.89 miles, leaving 387.1 miles to reach my goal of 800 miles.

Weather during the bike ride: start 86 (78% humidity), mostly cloudy, wind S 10 mph. Finish 93 (57% humidity), partly cloudy, wind SE 12 mph, gusts 17 mph. Rain probability goes down this week and it may be a couple of degrees cooler than normal. Good for bicycling.

School starts a week from today so traffic will pick up around the schools I ride by. Not a problem today though.

As I rode out of Roman Forest I took these photos.

Roman Forest Park

Roman Forest Entrance

After exiting Roman Forest my next stop was at the New Caney Mobil station at FM 1485 and I-69/US59 to refill my water bottle with ice and water. From there I rode south and into Valley Ranch behind the shopping center and New Caney ISD football stadium which become active again soon. Winding through Valley Ranch I biked back to I-69/US59 to ride south on the service road to the first entrance to Oakhurst. I was going to stop at the pool for a rest break but changed my mind and bicycled to the south Oakhurst Park and Pool. The Wahoo ride summary when I stopped.

Wahoo Ride Summary Oakhurst Pool

Sitting in the shade at the park cooled me down some but I drank most of my water meaning another stop before getting back into Kingwood. This photo shows where I rested.

Oakhurst Pool Park-

Leaving the park I rode south to Northpark Drive and went east to the Circle K/Valero station to refill the water bottle. I didn’t stay there long and headed to the I-69/US59 frontage road to bike to Kingwood Drive and make the u-turn to enter Kings Manor and then Kingwood. From there the ride went smoothly and I finished at 1:52 pm.

TickrFit HR monitor is still not working but I did hear from Wahoo Fitness with a couple of suggestions: clean the contacts with alcohol which I did and then use the Wahoo Fitness app to see if it is charging. At first it didn’t appear to charge but checking now it has charged from 40% to 49% in 30 minutes. That seems slow to what it sued to do. Maybe a warranty replacement is in order.
