About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Video: Proposed bike trail causing controversy for Bellaire residents

By Click2Houston.com Staff | www.click2houston.com

HOUSTON – Controversy is brewing around a proposed bike trail through the city of Bellaire.

Some residents said they are worried about what it could mean for existing trees and other landscaping in neighborhoods.

“It seems to be proposed to be at least 6 feet here, could be 8 feet,” said attorney Wesley Wright.

Wright said he would rather it be no feet about the proposed pathway where bike lanes for the city of …

Back to Back Days of 40+ Mile Bike Rides Equals Tired Legs

Texbiker.net Posted on August 3, 2018 by Rick AnkrumAugust 3, 2018

Two days in a row of 40+ miles biking makes for tired legs. I struggled to get my overall average speed up to 14.0 mph and didn’t make it but I got close a couple of times at 13.9 mph. Bicycling the “New Caney – Roman Forest – Valley Ranch” route my plan was to ride 40+ miles and I did that with 40.78 miles. But even with a light headwind the legs were tired. Power readings were between 100 and 200 watts and I don’t remember seeing any reading higher than that. That’s okay as I work on my mileage goal for August. I am up to 121.67 miles so far which for 3 days isn’t too bad; 15% of my 800 mile goal. The week’s total is 188.03 miles so I should ride 200+ with tomorrow’s bike ride.

Before leaving on the ride I looked at the Tour of Portugal stream but they were doing the introduction and I didn’t see any racing. My wheels were down and rolling at 9:46 am.

Another cool day weather wise when I got up this morning. By the time I left it warmed up. Weather during the bike ride: start 83 (70% humidity), a few clouds, wind N 5 mph. Finish 92 (44% humidity), a few clouds, wind NE 5 mph. Like the low humidity which kept me comfortable while sweating.

Riding into Roman Forest there is a new section of Tavola under construction and I rode into it for the first time. Two photos.

Bike Ride Tavola-2 Bike Ride Tavola

Not too long ago this land was overgrown with trees and brush.

The bike ride into Roman Forest had a headwind which made think ahead to the ride out of there with tailwind. It happened and I liked it. I stopped at the Shell station on Roman Forest Blvd. for ice and water before continuing to I-69/US59 service road for the trip back to Kingwood. One other stop at the Stripes station on FM 1314 to refill the water bottle and then back on the bike.

Riding south the wind wasn’t a problem and I worked again on increasing my overall average speed but couldn’t quite get it to 14 mph. Once I was in Kings Manor and Kingwood I slowed down. Finishing the ride at 12:57 pm I put the Canyon away and went inside. Hopefully the legs recover for Saturday’s bike ride.

New Bike Gloves, But Not Faster Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on August 2, 2018 by Rick AnkrumAugust 2, 2018

We are still enjoying the residential effects of the Tuesday cool front with lower humidity and lower temperature around sun rise. That made today’s bike ride pleasant for August. I chose the “Stroker Road – Huffman” route and rode 42.58 miles. Normally this route is closer to 40 miles but I added a couple of streets at the beginning. I am now at 10% of my 800 mile goal for August. For the week the total is 147.24 miles which positions me for 200+ miles for the week.

A weather overview during the bike ride: start 83 (68% humidity), a few clouds, wind calm. Finish 92 (42% humidity), a few clouds, wind E 5 mph.

Starting at 9:53 am it felt cooler and in the shade down right enjoyable. When I got to the kitchen this morning it was 69.8 degrees at my home weather station. That is not an August temperature in Houston.

Some people have new bike days but I had a new bike gloves day. My red/black gloves succumbed to the ravages of ultraviolet rays and faded to pink so I put a new pair in service.

Bike Ride New Red Black Gloves

The new gloves look better than the faded to pink ones but I didn’t notice any radical improvement in my biking.

I stopped at the Huffman Chevron for a rest break. I ate a Clif Bar and drank cold water. The Elment ride summary up to that point.

Wahoo Ride Summary Huffman Chevron

The rest break lasted about 25 minutes, long enough for the PowerPod to go to sleep. I will need to merge the files when I download the ride data from the PowerPod.

Biking west on FM 1960 the wind was almost a tailwind helping me but I think the passing traffic had a bigger affect. I noticed the headwind when I starting biking to the north on Pinehurst Trail on the way back home. I maintained my 14.0 mph overall average speed until the 40 mile point when I stopped to cross Kingwood Drive. I slowed down after that pulling it down to 13.8 mph by the time I finished at 1:29 pm.

Looking forward to the low humidity on torrow’s bike ride.
