About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Next to Last Bike Ride In July

Texbiker.net Posted on July 30, 2018 by Rick AnkrumJuly 30, 2018

Next to last bike ride in July and I wanted to add enough miles to make it possible to reach 900 miles for July. I chose the “Kingwood – SH 242 – Kingwood” route and biked 36.28 miles which moved July’s total to 879.2 miles. My plan is to bicycle 32+ miles tomorrow reaching 900+ miles for the second month this year.

I punched the Elemnt’s start button at 9:45 am beginning the bike ride. Weather during the ride: start 86 (74% humidity), partly cloudy, wind SW 7 mph. Finish 91(60% humidity), overcast, wind W 5 mph. Wind didn’t interfere with riding in almost any direction. The only place I had to increase my effort to battle the wind was the section on Valley Ranch Parkway from I-69/US59 to the Grand Parkway. After that no major problem. I built up the overall average speed to 14.8 mph and held it there until around the 31.5 mile point as I rode through Kings Manor.

One stop for water and ice at the New Caney Mobil station at FM 1485 and I-69/US59. With the somewhat cooler temperature I didn’t need more refills to the finish. I finished the ride at 12:22 pm.

As I was checking the Elemnt after the ride to be sure the ride data was uploaded a firmware update started installing. Not sure what got updated though.

July heat and dryness continues on Tuesday.

Single clue leads to arrest in hit-and-run that killed San Antonio bicyclist

By Brian Contreras | www.mysanantonio.com

A man faces second-degree felony charges for his suspected involvement in a hit-and-run last month that led to the death of a bicyclist.

Gabriel Morales, 31, is charged with failing to stop and render aid at the scene of a crash that killed Edward Ramos Martinez Jr., 46, according to the affidavit for Morales’ arrest warrant.

Around 4 a.m. on June 24, police officers responded to the site of a collision between a bicyclist and a motor vehicle in the 300 block of Frio City Road, the affidavit states. Martinez was struck from behind by the motor vehicle as he was riding his bicycle, and …

Afternoon Heat and 200+ Mile Week Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on July 29, 2018 by Rick AnkrumJuly 29, 2018

This time of the year in southeast Texas you pay the price for starting a bike ride at 12:24 pm. I wasn’t planning on riding today but after Friday’s bike ride I only needed 18 miles to hit 200 for the week and to position me to ride 900+ for the month if I ride Monday and Tuesday. So I couldn’t pass the opportunity. It was 95 as I rolled out on the “Atascocita – Walden” route to ride at least 18 miles. By the time I finished at 2:04 pm it was 97 and I rode 22.26 miles putting the week at 204.48 miles and July at 842.92 miles.

Home weather station at the start and finish of the bike ride.

Start

Finish

Wind was light and didn’t pose a problem during the bike ride. Lots of sun and that equals lots of sweat. I appreciated riding in the shade whenever it came up. Trees hanging over the street are welcomed. More hot and dry on Monday and Tuesday which is why I wanted to shorten the miles needed to hit 900+ for July. No rain in sight for many days unless a stray shower happens.
