About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Weekday Morning Cyclists Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on July 26, 2018 by Rick AnkrumJuly 26, 2018

After hitting the Elemnt start button at 8:27 am I didn’t expect to see any other cyclists that early on a weekday morning but I did. I rode south and a group of about 10 cyclists rode north as we passed at Kings River Driver on W. Lake Houston Parkway. I almost did not see them but I glanced up to check the traffic and I spotted them through the median bushes. I was riding the “Atascocita – Walden – E. Lake Houston Parkway” route early because of a later appointment and I wanted to get some miles in before then. Also it would help cut down the miles I needed to reach my July goal. The route produced 27.02 miles moving my July total to 785.73 miles leaving 15 miles to reach the 800 mile goal. Friday’s ride should put me over that. Before retirement a ride this distance would have been a long one.

With the early start the weather wasn’t heated up yet though that will happen later in the afternoon. During the ride weather: start 76 (81% humidity), partly cloudy, wind NW 4 mph. Finish 88 (61% humidity), partly cloudy, wind W 6 mph. The high humidity at the start made it feel cooler for a few minutes until the perspiration started flowing. Thankfully I wore my wrist bands to keep my hands and gloves somewhat dry.

No rest stops to keep the time shorter and the somewhat cooler temperature didn’t require as much water. I finished the ride at 10:27 am.

Pastor Guild Arrives in Texas

BY CHAD TURNER | www.tylerstarnews.com

Pastor Troy Guild has completed his mission of bicycling over 1,200 miles to meet his family in Texas. Together, Guild and his family have crossed the border to work with missionaries in Mexico.

According to Guild, the journey was physically, “the most difficult thing I have ever done.” Conditions were rough, and the heat index was up. There were also some complications along the way. However, nothing was going to stop Guild from carrying out God’s plan of cycling to Texas. The trip took 30 days and spanned over …

New Caney – Gene Campbell Road Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on July 25, 2018 by Rick AnkrumJuly 25, 2018

I chose the “New Caney – Gene Campbell Road” route for today’s bike ride for some variety and rode 36.56 miles. This put me at 758.71 miles for July, leaving 42 miles to reach my 800 mile goal. I think I can get there from here with 6 days left.

Start time was 9:57 am, not quite as early as I wanted but early enough to get me home before the real heat arrived. Ride ended at 12:38 pm.

Weather during the bike ride: start 87 (57% humidity), partly cloudy, wind NE 4 mph. Finish 94 (43% humidity), a few clouds, wind calm. With the light breeze I didn’t have much trouble with a headwind and built my overall average speed up to 14.8 mph and held it at 14.7 until around 32.4 miles when I rode into Kings Manor and then Kingwood where I slowed down for traffic and stop signs.

Home Weather Bike Ride Start
Home Weather Bike Ride Finish

Only one stop at the Circle K/Valero on FM 1314 at Sorters Road for water and ice to carry me to the finish.

No other cyclists spotted along the route.

Hot and dry weather returns today until Monday or Tuesday. I plan on biking Thursday and Friday.

City launches $3.2 million sidewalk project

By FERNANDO DEL VALLE | www.valleymorningstar.com

HARLINGEN — Soon, the city’s sidewalks will tie into its trail system, linking neighborhoods, schools and retail centers.

It’s all part of plan to create a network to make the city “a walkable community,” Assistant City Manager Carlos Sanchez said yesterday.

Last week, city commissioners launched the first leg of a $3.2 million project to build nearly 17 miles of sidewalks across four areas of town. …

Nelson remembered for service, honored with Texas Tech law scholarship

By Matt Dotray | www.lubbockonline.com

The funeral service for J. David Nelson was Monday afternoon at the First Christian Church in downtown Lubbock.

Friends and family gathered to celebrate the life, and mourn the loss, of the Lubbock native, attorney, and former city councilman who appeared set to be a judge in Lubbock County. Friends say he will be remembered for his work and dedication in the legal profession, government and the non-profit organizations in which he served in leadership roles.

Nelson, 67, died after he was struck by a pickup truck Wednesday morning while riding his bicycle on FM 41 near …
