And TxDOT keeps letting us down.<br \/>\nBack in August, we told you about the public comment period for proposed new rules for the Transportation Alternatives Program (TAP).\u00c2\u00a0 You responded to the tune of over 500 comments to TxDOT asking them to adjust the rules to make sure TAP funding in Texas is going to its best possible use.<br \/>\nLast week, we saw the adjusted TAP rules and our reaction was mixed. Because of your voice, the&#8230;<\/p>\n<h2><a href=\"http:\/\/bcullins.blogspot.com\/2014\/09\/hidden-gems.html\">Hidden Gems<\/a><\/h2>\n<h3>by bill cullins\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 \u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 \u00c2\u00a0Team San Angelo<\/h3>\n<p>Last week&#8217;s article about the fitness venues around Lake Nasworthy (http:\/\/bcullins.blogspot.com\/2014\/09\/lake-areas-need-improvements.html) generated several questions about the Nature Preserve Trail on Spillway Road and the adjacent Spillway Park open space at the end of Spillway Road.<br \/>\nCompared to the other parks and open space around Lake Nasworthy, these two areas get very little usage.\u00c2\u00a0 That may be because many people don&#8217;t know where they are located or what the areas offer for casual cyclists, hikers, runners or walkers.<br \/>\nEven though these areas are off the beaten path compared to locations like the swim beach and the KOA loop, they are hidden gems and offer some natural amenities that heavier-used areas just don&#8217;t provide.<br \/>\nThe Nature Preserve Trail is a scenic one-mile loop that begins at a small parking area on Spillway road. To get there, go south on Knickerbocker Blvd past the airport and then turn right onto Spillway Road just before the Twin Buttes dam.\u00c2\u00a0 Follow Spillway for two miles to the Nature Trail parking lot which will be&#8230;<\/p>\n<h2><a href=\"http:\/\/lonestarcyclists.org\/bike-ride\/roundabout-ride\">A Roundabout Ride<\/a><\/h2>\n<h3>Lone Star Cyclists<\/h3>\n<p>Pace: Touring with a Fast Pace Option (Touring is a varied pace with frequent stops averaging 12-15 mph)<br \/>\nDate: Saturday, September 27, 2014 &#8211; 7:30am<br \/>\nLocation: Martin Luther King Sports Center, 7001 Golf Club Dr, Arlington 76001<br \/>\nGPS 32.629766,-97.184255<br \/>\nDistances: 32 and 52 Miles<br \/>\nOnce again we&#8217;ll bicycle toward Burleson, Alvarado, and Mansfield, this time leaving from southwest Arlington at the MLK Sports Center. We won&#8217;t actually visit these towns, but will instead skirt the border of each in a roundabout fashion.
