Many in the 3rd category.<br \/>\n48 degrees when I rode out and onto the on ramp of interstate I-10. Yep, bicycle on the berm lane of the interstate. No other roads exist so you are routed there twice, for 9 miles then later 11 miles. Actually it’s pretty nice. The pavement is smooth, the gradients are gradual and I’m separated from the travel\/truck lane by a rumble strip. We wished we’d brought our passports. The hotel clerk said you don’t need a passport to go there. (but how about the return?) So we drove down to where we thought we might see the Rio Grande where an El Paso street deadended at the river. We could see the concrete walls lining the river, the border fence, cars, buses and buildings across the the border less than 200′ away but the river was down inside the channel. A little hot from some, but being from KY and Rich being from GA we both appreciated the heat, more like we’re used to when riding. I’ve learned the weather changes quickly in TX. This morning we awoke with cloudy skies with the prediction for midday and afternoon rain\/thunderstorms and heavy thunderstorms forecast for overnight.<br \/>\nBecause of that we quickly packed up and headed out to put as many miles as possible behind us before the rains came. We had spent the evening in Kerrville-Schreiner City Park which is about 5 miles off course. I hadn’t used it yet on this trip, but for getting back on route I used Google Maps for bikes. In fact, my ice cream consumption for a ride is way behind quota. I have to start making fewer sandwiches in the morning, but with the wind and road surface I have no problem consuming them. Everytime I see a Dairy Queen the timing just isn’t right. This morning as I left the Best Western I rode less than a quarter mile before I passed a Dairy Queen. They need a bigger sign! On the way, though, we decided to make a detour and visit Texas Washington State Park where Texas Declaration of Independence was signed and Texas constitution written. The visit was well worth the extra several miles. We learned how Texas settlers, led by Austin and Houston, rebelled against the Mexican government to achieve rights to be tried by the jury of their piers, to have schools for their children, and, alas, to keep their slaves.
