Many of you will remember that we did the first leg (St. Augustine, FL to Austin, TX) of the bike tour in Oct-Nov of last year. We started the second leg (Austin to San Diego) in February, but on the 2nd day I had a health issue and had to return to Houston.<br \/>\nEverything is fine now, so this morning Liz &amp; I traveled from Houston to Hunt, TX, the &#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Day 33: Vanderpool, TX to 25 miles east of Bracketville, TX<br \/>\nSaturday October 8, 2016, 54 miles (87 km) &#8211; Total so far: 1,634 miles (2,630 km)<br \/>\nStarting Point: Vanderpool, TX<br \/>\nEnding Point: 25 miles east of Bracketville, TX<br \/>\nRiding Conditions: Temps in the mid 60&#8217;s early, but warmed to the low 80&#8217;s. Light winds.<br \/>\nMiles Today: 54<br \/>\nQuote for the day: &#8220;Don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t buy upgrades, ride up grades&#8221; \u00e2\u20ac\u201c Eddy Merckx<br \/>\nBefore I talk about today, I want to mention that I just updated yesterday&#8217;s post. I started way too late last night, and had to hurry.<br \/>\nI knew what I was facing this morning, so there was nothing to do but get started. There were two long climbs in the first 12 miles, and it took me almost two hours to get through them. Not much fun. None of the training I&#8217;ve done in the Houston area prepared me for these climbs. But the elevation profile (see below) told me that life would radically improve once I got to the top of the second climb. I stopped frequently to rest, and gradually made progress. Not pretty, but it got done.<br \/>\nThe silver lining was defintely the views.
