Total so far: 990 miles (1,593 km)
A pretty quiet day really except for the start. I was trying to make some scrambled eggs but had a self flipping pan so half of it ended up on the floor. It took 2 espressos for mental equilibrium to be restored. After that we set off for 15 miles of flat El Paso suburbs, much nicer than the hilly entrance we had had, then just pedalling through more pecan plantations. Weather was nicely overcast, so not too hot. We arrived at …

Day 19:Fort Hancock to Van Horn, Texas: 🎼Big wheel keep on turning🎼
Saturday March 17, 2018, 72 miles (116 km) – Total so far: 1,062 miles (1,709 km)
Stayed last night in The Community Church. Angie’s Cafe nearby so we headed there for breakfast. I had the huevos rancheros, something I’ve been wanting to try since arriving in Tex-Mex country. Eeeugh! Never again. ( I thought mine were great, eggs covered in salsa and melted cheese with retried beans, poppy) …

Day 20: Van Horn TX to Marfa TX: uphill all day and windy, mostly in our favour
Sunday March 18, 2018, 76 miles (122 km) – Total so far: 1,138 miles (1,831 km)
A pretty poor night’s sleep with strong winds whipping the tents, a bit of rain, and the noise every half hour of a train going through a couple of hundred metres away and for some reason sounding a horn 50 times which quite genuinely must be audible a couple of miles away.

I eventually got up at 0545 and packed up fast, planning to join Kathy and Dave for an early start. However both my Garmin watch and my phone had cleverly reset themselves for Mountain Time (at least 10 miles away) so in fact it was 0645 and I had to rush to not delay the others too much.

A very poor breakfast at Wendy’s and off onto a …

Day 21:Marfa to Marathon
Monday March 19, 2018, 56 miles (90 km) – Total so far: 1,194 miles (1,922 km)
Woke up in bright light ,in a large comfortable bed in a warm motel, Riata on edge of town, great to stretch out and not confined to …

Day 22:Marathon to Sanderson: 🎼Deep in the heart of Texas🎼
Tuesday March 20, 2018, 55 miles (89 km) – Total so far: 1,249 miles (2,010 km)
It was a bitterly cold night at the campsite in Marathon, a nice campsite but with little shelter from the cold wind. Poppy had bought a bag of ice to keep the milk cold and had left it on the deck on which I had pitched my tent. In the morning it was frozen to the deck!

But oh the stars! I was awoken by a train at about 1:00am and got up to visit the loo, as a gentleman of advanced years is disposed to do, and as I crossed the campsite I had to stop and gaze in awe at what must be the greatest show on earth. With absolutely no light pollution or cloud cover, I have surely never seen such a sight.

I got up early as I was so …

Day 24:Seminole State Park to Del Rio, Texas
Thursday March 22, 2018, 42 miles (68 km) – Total so far: 1,374 miles (2,211 km)
After the long hard slog to Seminole State Park and surviving th3 winds overnight it was gteat to get a sleep 8n till 8:15. Ian had filled out the registration slip for the camping fee $15 fo4 th3 site but had omitted the park entry fee of $5 each. Brutal on legs that had not yet warmed up. Full implementation, with two lanes in the roundabout, will occur within the next several weeks. The roundabout is part of a project that also adds a southbound bypass lane and enhances bicycle and pedestrian facilities. Construction on the project began in October.
