Bike-building event in Plano benefits elementary school students in need<\/a><\/h2>\n

The event was organized by a Frisco-based division of Golden State Foods\n\"\"\/<\/p>\n

A bike-building event provided life lessons and a cool new ride for elementary school students in Plano.<\/p>\n

Golden State Foods Foundation held the event last Friday to benefit 50 students from Mendenhall Elementary School in Plano, the foundation stated in an email.<\/p>\n

Students built their own bike with guidance from a volunteer mentor with the foundation. They also received helmets and bike locks.<\/p>\n

East Texas man dies when he\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s hit by a pickup while cycling on state highway near Carthage<\/a><\/h2>\n

PANOLA COUNTY, Texas (KSLA) \u00e2\u20ac\u201d An East Texas man died when his fitness bicycle was struck by a pickup.<\/p>\n

The Texas Department of Public Safety said he is 66-year-old Carthage resident Robert Owens.<\/p>\n

The accident happened at 5:45 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 9 on Texas Highway 149 about two miles northwest of Carthage.<\/p>\n

Preliminary investigation shows that Owens was riding a Mongoose Hotshot bicycle northwest on Texas 149 when he was hit by a 2014 Chevrolet Silverado traveling the same direction, Texas DPS Sgt. Jean M. Dark said.<\/p>\n

The bicycle had no lights and no reflectors, she added.<\/p>\n

Owens was pronounced at the scene. His body was taken to Jimerson-Lipsey Funeral Home in Carthage.<\/p>\n

A Texas DPS news release gave no indication whether the truck\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s driver or his passenger was injured.<\/p>\n
