Col. Bill Mercado of La Vernia has taken part in the grueling cycling race called the Hotter \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcn Hell Hundred in Wichita Falls, Texas. He was diagnosed with leukemia more than two years ago, but Mercado hasn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t let his treatments stop him from living life to the fullest.<\/p>\n<p>The Hotter\u00e2\u20ac\u2122N Hell Hundred is not for shirkers. It\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s for gallant souls committed to riding bicycles 100 grueling miles in 100-degree heat in one day.<\/p>\n<p>On Aug. 28, cyclist Bill Mercado, 76, finished his 16th ride at the event that\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s been held in Wichita Falls since 1982. The retired Army lieutenant colonel rode his black and yellow Cerv\u00c3\u00a9lo carbon-frame bicycle among more than 13,000 cyclists from around the world. Mercado pedaled his sleek bike frame, weighing 2 pounds with 22 gears and hailed for its aerodynamic design, in the thick of speeding scrums.<\/p>\n<p>He finished in under six hours. Monday, they rode their bikes through a number of Central Texas towns, going from Bryan-College Station to Waco.<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153Knowing that we\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re doing it for someone that can not do that now,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Capt.
