Annual bike ride raises funds for area volunteer fire departments<\/a><\/h2>\n

On Oct. 16, dozens of people gathered in the Breckenridge City Park for the fifth annual Sloan Everett Pure Country Pedal Memorial Bike Ride, and last week, the organizers of the fundraising event donated thousands of dollars to the three local volunteer fire departments.<\/p>\n

The bike ride brought together 77 bicycle riders, as well as many others who joined the crowd for a barbecue lunch and concert in the park. The annual event honors the memory of Sloan Everett, a Breckenridge rancher who died in a 2017 wildfire in the Texas Panhandle.<\/p>\n

In 2019, the Breckenridge Chamber of Commerce and the Everett family added the fundraising element to the event, benefiting Stephens County volunteer fire departments. The Everett family wanted to recognize the role volunteer firefighters play in rural Texas, especially because. when fire overtook Sloan and two friends as they were trying to …<\/p>\n

Monday November 1, 2021, 33 miles (53 km) – Total so far: 1,391 miles (2,239 km)\nIt was cloudy leaving Del Rio. Since it was a short 30 mile ride, I didn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t leave until afternoon. Again it was headwinds\/crosswind all the way but manageable.<\/p>\n

I got chased by a dog approaching the airbase. It came out from behind the fence but stopped when I slowed down. We will see if that\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s the way to deal with dog chase. A jet flew right above me making huge noise.<\/p>\n

Jimmy and Sabrina rode in the other direction. We all stopped to chat a little. They were from Cleveland Ohio and is going to Phoenix. They don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t have a destination or end date. How lucky it is to be young and careless.<\/p>\n

Wednesday November 3, 2021\nRain is finally caught up with me. I am trying to leave Leakey but it is raining hard. It doesn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t appear to let up for the day and I have tent to shelter me for now. If I packed it up I will be in rain for the next 50 miles.
