As a family medicine doctor living with multiple sclerosis, I am particularly passionate about preventative healthcare, especially during MS Awareness Week.

MS is a chronic disease that affects the central nervous system, and there is currently no cure. The immune system attacks the central nervous system, which leads to damage and disruption of nerve signals. This can cause a wide range of symptoms which can worsen over time. …

… I took my ‘life sentence’ with MS and turned it into motivation to take advantage of every day. In 2018, nine years after my diagnosis, I successfully finished the 150-mile Bike MS: Texas MS 150 bike ride, which I viewed as both a physical and mental accomplishment. I couldn’t have done it without the encouragement of the other riders and volunteers, either living with MS or fighting for awareness around me. Since then, I’ve participated in every Texas MS 150, and this April, my 76-year-old mother will join me again at the Austin starting line to ride along with me. …

Presidio’s Consulate of Mexico hosts Women’s History Month programming

By Sam Karas | bigbendsentinel.com

Adrian Flores of the Presidio Volunteer Fire Department led a community bike ride from the Consulate of Mexico on Saturday.
