His parents gifted him a bike instead.<\/p>\n<p>Little did he know that substitution would put him on a path to the Olympics.<\/p>\n<p>As a student at Klein High School, Koontz competed in baseball, basketball, football and diving. He never excelled, for reasons ranging from his size to his technical abilities.<\/p>\n<p>But when he first got on a bike, he realized that in cycling, there\u2019s nowhere to hide. The sport gives back what you put into it.
