Can a social bike ride take root in car-centric Longview?: ‘We’re just vibing’

The third Thursday in August was a hot one — triple digits. Hot enough to subdue the resident wasps outside of Silver Grizzly Espresso, but not enough to dampen enthusiasm for a bike ride staging under the downtown Longview coffee shop’s awning.
In a city engineered to move cars as fast as possible, only the most dedicated cyclists venture off Longview’s trails and onto the streets — fewer still in the heat of late August. Yet the 20-plus riders gearing up that evening didn’t fit the mold of hardcore endurance athletes.

CCPD said the man was hit by a car as he was travelling north in the southbound lanes late Sunday evening. The highway was shut down for several hours.
CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — A bicyclist was found dead on Hwy. 358 on Sunday night, causing the interchange to be shut down for several hours, the Corpus Christi Police Department said.

68-year-old Chuck Henson, an avid cyclist, was riding in a group of 10 on Saturday when he was struck straight on. The driver stopped and is not expected to be charged.

68-year-old Charles Henson was riding his bike when he was hit and killed by a driver on Saturday. Now, his friends are honoring him.
BENBROOK, Texas — Longtime cyclist Javier Lucio vows never to forget fellow cyclist Charles Henson, who is affectionately known as Chuck. The two are part of Fort Worth’s cycling community who ride as part of staying healthy and enjoying fellowship at the same time.
“We had a lot of wonderful times with Chuck,” Javier Lucio said, “and we’re going to miss this one.”

This weekend it’s our final State Championship event of 2024 with Elite TT on Saturday and Omnium/Match Sprint on Sunday. Before that we have TNR Sprint Night tomorrow. Last week we were busy with TNR Track on Speed, several Alkekian’s headed to Fort Cavazos for State Road Championship and Jessica found herself on the podium in Italy!
