About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Maria’s Pacer Group Zoomed By After I Joined On Zwift Watopia’s Waistband

Texbiker.net Posted on December 10, 2023 by Rick AnkrumDecember 10, 2023

I wrapped up this week’s biking in Zwift. Outside it was sunny and 57 degrees with wind, cooler than I like. I joined Maria’s Pacer Group on Watopia’s Waistband. At the time I didn’t realize it was a pacer group and they zoomed away. Continuing on the ride it didn’t have the route countdown in the HUD. Fortunately I remembered the distance was 17.3 miles and I recognized the scenery at the finish. I expected 331 feet of elevation gain but I was happy with only 315 feet. Looking at my other rides on Watopia’s Waistband from 2023 today wasn’t the fastest or slowest.

This week I reached my road mile goal for the month, 200 miles. Biking was a mixture of road and Zwift for a total of 185.85 miles. Three Zwift rides and four road rides. Year to date I passed 2022’s total miles (9493.58 road plus Zwift miles) with 2023 totaling 9674.84 miles.

Popular road at Benbrook Lake to stay open to cyclists due to ‘passionate’ community effort

By Harriet Ramos | www.star-telegram.com

Cyclists at Benbrook Lake listen to the announcement from Army Corps of Engineers officials on Saturday that the campground will remain open to bicycles and pedestrians. Harriet Ramos hramos@star-telegram.com

Plans to close a popular 2-and-a-half mile road at Benbrook Lake to bicycle and pedestrian traffic have been suspended, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers said Saturday. The closure was scheduled for Jan. 1, 2024, and would have prevented day-use cyclists, walkers and joggers from bypassing the barrier between the the North Holiday Park day-use area and the South Holiday Park campgrounds. Stefan Flores, the …

The Nail Stuck My Rear Tire On The Strava Bridge of Death Segment

Texbiker.net Posted on December 9, 2023 by Rick AnkrumDecember 9, 2023

During Thursday’s bike ride going west over Lake Houston I commented during the Strava “Bridge of Death” segment about having flat tires. Little did I know that I would get one of those during that segment over Lake Houston on today’s bike ride. Around mile 21.9 I heard a clicking sound from the rear tire and suspected something was stuck in the tire. I stopped but didn’t get off the bike to inspect the tire. My quick look missed the nail sticking out of the tire and I continued on. A man in a white car pulled over in front of me asking if I was okay. At that point I thought I was but not long after he drove off the rear tire went flat. I walked from there to the Chevron station at Atascocita Shores Drive where I fixed the flat with an adhesive patch. I’m becoming a fan of those patches. The rear tire fixed I was back on the Cervelo Caledonia bike to ride the remaining 11 miles back to Kingwood.

It all began at 9:03 AM, the earliest start in sometime. This meant I had an opportunity to see other cyclists and I did. Most of them are in the video. I missed one on W. Lake Houston Parkway north of Kings River Drive while I rode south. In order to get where I usually see other cyclists on Saturday I skipped some streets in North Woodland Hills and Bear Branch villages but I still labeled the route Atascocita – Huffman – Walden. The ride was a couple of miles shorter because of that plus walking about a mile on the Lake Houston causeway coming in at 32.97 miles. This was just enough to put me at my 200 mile goal for December with 200.38 miles. The week stands at 168.41 miles.

HISD second graders gifted bicycles through Wish for Wheels

blogs.houstonisd.org

In 2022, Dogan Elementary School’s first graders watched covetously as their second-grade schoolmates were gifted bicycles courtesy of HISD’s partnership with Oxy and Wish for Wheels. They never would have dreamed that in a year’s time, they would be the recipients of bikes of their own, just in time for the holidays.

Wish for Wheels is a nonprofit organization that works with businesses to provide new bicycles to students at Title 1 schools. Since 2015, Oxy employees have volunteered with Wish for Wheels to donate brand new bicycles to second grade students at 10 HISD elementary schools. This year, 615 bicycles were distributed to students at Atherton, Bruce, Dogan, Isaacs, Kashmere Gardens, Henderson, Scroggins, Port Houston, Pugh, and Martinez Elementary Schools. …
