About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Couldn’t Pass Up The Blue Sky. Biked Kingwood – Brooklyn Trails

Texbiker.net Posted on December 4, 2023 by Rick AnkrumDecember 4, 2023

Two errands took up most of my morning. I thought about riding Zwift but I couldn’t pass all of the blue sky and sunshine even though it was a few degrees cooler than I prefer. Today I made a concerted effort to not repeat my bike computer pause error and not turning on the microphone for GoPro audio. I fined tuned the screen cues on the Bolt computer by switching screens to the map page just before recording on the GoPro and switching to another screen after stopping the GoPro recording. It wasn’t right on the money but it made searching for the spot in the Bolt computer screen capture a little easier to find.

The route was a shorter one with me rolling out at 1:13 PM on the Cervelo Caledonia. Mostly on Kingwood streets, through Woodridge Forest, to US59 north frontage road. I turned right from that onto E. Martin Drive, crossing Loop 494 and the railroad tracks. I rode the long loop through Brooklyn Trails. Kelley Road south and back to Woodridge Forest. I caught the green light at Nothpark Drive going into North Woodland Hills, some side streets to add some distance (I think this accounts for today’s ride being longer than the 11/24/2023 ride). A few streets through South Woodland Hills took me to Woodland Hills Drive. On the east side of that street I biked through Bear Branch and ended the ride in Hunters Ridge at 2:38 PM. I call this the Kingwood – Brooklyn Trails route. No new streets, just a different combination.

During the ride I hit a Strava 3rd fastest time on Kris Spraggins Memorial Route (2:22).

Weather: Start 67 degrees, humidity 38%, dew point 40.3, a few clouds, wind N 9 mph; Finish 67 degrees, humidity 38%, dew point 40.9, a few clouds, wind N 8 mph.

Video Recording Isn’t Easy. Biking Kingwood-San Jacinto Bayou Greenway- Forest Cove

Texbiker.net Posted on December 3, 2023 by Rick AnkrumDecember 3, 2023

A full week of biking wrapping up today on my Lynskey Helix bike. I rode through Kingwood, onto the San Jacinto Bayou Greenway, and Forest Cove. I used a route name to identify the route but it isn’t the same direction and is a little shorter than the other rides, Kingwood – Forest Cove – San Jacinto Bayou Greenway. I rolled away at 2:24 PM after watching the men’s UCI Cyclocross World Cup Flamanville, France. I watched the women’s race before leaving for church in the morning. The later start dictated a shorter ride. I finished at 4:01 PM after riding 18.32 miles. I rode each day this week, three on Zwift and four on the road.

Recording clips from today’s ride was riddled with mistakes. I turned on the Bolt computer screen capture and then paused the computer so that the first half mile didn’t record the miles or map. After the ride I discovered I forgot to turn on my microphone so if you have wanted a video without me talking this is the one. No sound made it difficult to sync the Bolt map with the video but I got close.

The temperature was 71 with some sun. Much better than the overcast sky and upper 60’s yesterday. I wore a long sleeve jersey and a short sleeve jersey and I’m glad I did. In the shade it was chilly. At the finish it had cooled to 68. Fortunately the wind was only 6 mph.

On the positive side I racked up a bunch of Strava top results. I didn’t know there were that many segments on the route.

This year’s memorial bike ride raised more than $41,000 for local volunteer fire departments

By Carla McKeown | breckenridgetexan.com

This year’s Sloan Everett Pure Country Pedal Memorial Bike Ride had more participants and raised more funds than it has in its history, more than tripling the amount raised the first year the event became a fundraiser in 2019.

On Wednesday afternoon, several members of the Everett family and others involved in organizing the bike ride gathered at the Breckenridge City Park to present checks to the three local volunteer fire departments. This year, the bike ride raised $41,753.18, donating $13,752.17 each to the Caddo VFD, Hubbard Creek VFD and Wayland VFD. …

San Antonio’s 12-year-old bike plan flopped. Now young city leaders are spearheading a reboot.

by Andrea Drusch | sanantonioreport.org

Gathered around a table at the Dakota East Side Ice House Thursday night, a group of roughly 20 bike enthusiasts got the first look at the City of San Antonio’s overhauled bike website, complete with comprehensive maps of the city’s existing bike routes.

“We just today launched a monster update to our website,” said David Bemporad, a transportation planning consultant working on the city’s bike network reboot.

“We realized there’s no real place anywhere at that you can find a complete and consolidated inventory of what exists on San Antonio streets right now that can be used by bikes. It didn’t exist.” …

The Northaven Trail bridge is a vital pedestrian connector

By Dallas Morning News Editorial | www.dallasnews.com

If you live in the Dallas area and you’ve been on the Internet in the last few weeks, you’ve probably seen the video of a confused driver trying to get over a bridge meant for pedestrians.

The car was driving over the new Northaven Trail pedestrian bridge over North Central Expressway, a bridge that connects the Cottonwood Creek, White Rock Creek and the SoPac trails in the east and the Northaven Trail in the west.

This all happened last month, just a few days after the bridge opened, and the moment was rich with …
