About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

5 Day Bike Ride Interruption Ended

Texbiker.net Posted on October 27, 2015 by Rick AnkrumOctober 27, 2015

Rest days! I last biked 5 days ago. Between a day spent at the Houston Medical Center with my wife to rain from the Hurricane Patricia remnants the bike did not leave the garage. Yesterday an overcast sky and a stiff north wind (23 mph with 30+ mph gusts) most of the day caused me to shift to a 3 mile walk around the Hunters Ridge Village in Kingwood. Fast forward to today. Around noon the clouds started to break up and the sun came through. The temperature finally moved from 64 to the low 70’s. I got dressed to ride with a short sleeve jersey over a long sleeve one. I headed out at 12:45 on the “Atascocita – Walden – Huffman” route.

Along the route I looked for evidence of the 5″+ rain we received over the weekend. The only signs were lots of pine needle piles in the street and the higher water in Lake Houston. I stopped on the FM1960 Lake Houston Causeway about midway and took these pictures:

10-27-2015 Bike Ride Lake Houston-5
10-27-2015 Bike Ride Lake Houston-3
10-27-2015 Bike Ride Lake Houston-1

The trees in the left picture usually stick up out of the water several feet higher. The middle picture shows a couple of stumps. The one farther away has a bird perched on it.

It felt good to be out on the road again. Nothing unusual on the ride. I stopped at the Huffman Chevron at 20.95 miles into the ride for a break. I waited long enough to time my arrival at Kingwood Drive to be after the high school dismissal. I left the Chevron at 2:49. The weather screenshots while I took a break at the Chevron station.

10-27-2015 Huffman Weather-4
10-27-2015 Huffman Weather-5

Notice the wind speed in the left picture. This cost me a lot of effort when I left Huffman to ride home. The headwind was stiff riding across Lake Houston until I got near the west side of the lake. For some reason when I approached the turn onto Atascocita Shores Drive the wind let up some. By then I built up my average speed to 15.1 mph. I got back home at 3:38 biking 32.71 miles.

When I reached Kingwood Drive there was no traffic for a change and I got across without stopping.

This was the 36th time on the “Atascocita – Walden – Huffman” route in 2015. Mileage stats: 675.15 miles for October, 6192 miles for 2015.

REI to close on Black Friday, promoting outdoor activity instead

by BRAIN Staff        www.bicycleretailer.com

SEATTLE (BRAIN) — Outdoor co-op REI will not open its stores on “Black Friday,” Nov. 27 this year. Instead of promoting retail consumption on the day after Thanksgiving, REI is channeling the attention the move is getting toward promoting increased outdoor activity that day.
“On November 27, we’ll be closing all 143 of our stores and paying our employees to head outside,” REI’s president Jerry Stritzke said in a message posted on a …

Bike shop visits down sharply, report says

by BRAIN Staff        www.bicycleretailer.com

Gluskin Townley report finds shop visits have declined 17 percent since 2012.
ALLENTOWN, Pa. (BRAIN) — Bike shop visits by consumers declined 17 percent between 2012 and 2014, according to a new report based on consumer research by the industry consulting group Gluskin Townley.
Besides the decline in shop visits, the American Bicyclist Study showed an even sharper change since the last time the study was done, in 2012: The number of consumers who visited a bike shop, but purchased a bicycle from a …

Day 23: Van Horn to Marfa, TX
Monday October 26, 2015, 75 miles (121 km) – Total so far: 1,050 miles (1,690 km)
Posted via email Mon Oct 26 19:34:02 2015 PDT
Last night I did a good job of packing my gear so it wasn’t quite as much work getting ready in the morning. As a result I got started at 8:30am, a good half hour before my normal departure time.
The Weather Channel said it was 43 degrees when I left Van Horn and it felt like it. I put on my raincoat and had some warm fleece gloves. I probably should have worn a hat too but I didn’t bother to dig through my pannier to find it.
I went off-route today heading south of Hwy 90 from Van Horn. The road had a …

I had a great breakfast this morning to start my day: tamales, flautas, rice, and coffee. Then I and my warmshowers host David cycled a short distance into San Elizario. I slept well at the Community Church; when I first got up I saw a coyote outside which was a surprise. After my standard breakfast of cold cereal I got on the road at my regular time.
The weather was cool and the cycling was good because it was a Saturday and there was little traffic on Hwy 20. When I cam to McNary I decided to just get onto I-10 because I was going to end up there anyway and I could save a few miles by cycling on it now. …

Biking For Kids in San Antonio

www.cavendercadillac.com

San Antonio’s little biking community could be the next generation to boost this city’s bike commuting numbers, but we have to get them ready for that milestone. Take a look at a few biking tips that will be helpful to kids and adults alike.
Safety First — Almost everyone is familiar with the first rule of safety when riding a bike, but how to properly fit a helmet to one’s head may not be known to everyone. The helmet should not be too big or too small — it should fit just right.  A helmet needs to be level on the head; it should not cover or …

Regional calendar needed to help organize growing list of events

by Bill Cullins        www.gosanangelo.com

So far in 2015 there have been approximately 21 cycling events, 25 running races, four triathlons and multiple other fitness events here in San Angelo.
In addition to the local event schedule, other regional events impact the overall schedule since many athletes also compete in out-of-town races.
Weekends without some type of fitness event scheduled have been rare, and some Saturday mornings had multiple races scheduled on the same day.
The crowded event schedule issue is further exacerbated by …
