About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Riding the Texas Hill Country: Vanderville to Kerrville
Tuesday October 13, 2015
Breakfast was prepared in our cabin. There were no restaurants for many miles. I warmed the frozen egg cheese and sausage sandwich I bought a day earlier, made a cup of tea and had a cherry cheese Danish.
We rode 50 miles today from Vanderpoole to Kerville.
Bob and I were on the road by 7:00am. We were looking at a long day in the Texas Hill Country and we wanted to get some miles in before the Sun made the day a hot 93 degrees.
We immediately were confronted with our first challenge about a mile from our cabin. The last Sister, a 8% climb about 1 1/4mile in length. I ground up the hill at 3mph and it took a lot of hard breathing but I finally reached the top. After this climb our terrain consisted of many ups and downs for about 35 miles. The rollercoaster down hills never got you more than about …

So Dry on this Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on October 13, 2015 by Rick AnkrumOctober 13, 2015

Riding the “Kingwood – Hare Cook Road – Kingwood” route through the grass farms I stopped to take these pictures.

10-13-2015 bike Ride Ramsey Rd-1
10-13-2015 Bike Ride Ramsey Rd-2

In the field behind my bike is a very large lawn sprinkler watering the grass. I could hear the engine on the pump moving water from an irrigation canal to the left.

While riding the route I was passed by another biker on Old Atascocita Road east of FM2100. He rode ahead of me for about 1/2 a mile and then turned around towards FM2100. I waved as he rode by.

The “cool” front arrived during the night but little to no rain fell. The temperature when I left home at 12:20 was 90 degrees but more importantly the humidity was 35%. By the time I got back home the temperature was up to 94 degrees and the humidity was down to 22%. Sweating while riding was almost gone before it could come out of my pores. The clear blue sky and 6 mph NNW breeze was just enough to dry off my jersey and shorts whenever I stopped. Not much of a cool front but more of a dry front.

On the 43.78 mile long ride I looked at my cadence more than usual trying to stay in 80 to 90 range as I shift to higher gears. I rode at a more consistent speed and my average speed increased more smoothly. I kept it at 15.1 mph for a majority of the ride. This became a fight riding north on FM2100 from the Hare-Cook Road intersection. The wind was in my face all the way to Huffman where I stopped at the Chevron station to give my legs a chance to recover. This was 32.03 miles into the ride. I got there about 2:43 and stayed until 3:18. I ate some snacks and drank Powerade. I should’ve drank more water. Up to the rest stop I only consumed 1 large water bottle. The weather while I stopped at the Chevron station.

This weather is supposed to continue for several days. Great biking weather in southeast Texas.

Cycling for Change seeks participants

by Luis Carlos Lopez , El Paso Times        www.elpasotimes.com

Cycling for Change officials said participation this year is low and more riders are needed to participate in the Oct. 18 event at Gallegos Park in Canutillo.
The catch?
Those who participate will be donating money to help victims of domestic violence.
” We are not getting enough cyclists,” said volunteer Carmen Contreras.
The third annual cycling event on Oct. 18 at Gallegos Park in Canutillo will start at 8 a.m. Those who participate can choose from one of three …

Denison denied funding for Katy Trail, plans to reapply

By William C. Wadsack        heralddemocrat.com

Denison recently learned it won’t be receiving a grant from the Texas Department of Transportation this year for its planned Katy Trail project, but the city is undeterred in its plans for the trail and will reapply for the grant next year.
“We’re disappointed we didn’t get the funding, but certainly aren’t going to give up,” City Manager Jud Rex said. “We heard enough from the community that there is a lot of interest in this and health and wellness is certainly a priority for the city.”
Denison applied for the grant through TxDOT’s Transportation Alternatives Program, which would have provided 80 percent of the $2.5 million estimated budget for the 2.64 miles of trail along the right-of-way of the old Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad. The route Denison plans to construct will run from Highway 691 near …

Bike plan aims to improve traffic congestion, quality of life in El Paso

by Stephanie Toone | American City and County        americancityandcounty.com

El Paso, Texas, city officials are in the planning stages of updating their 33-year-old bike plan to offer residents more innovative bike facilities, enhance connectivity for cyclists through the city and decrease traffic on the city’s roadways.
El Pasoans had their first opportunity to offer input on what the bike plan should include during Saturday’s Bike Plan Community Outreach Kick-Off in downtown El Paso. More than 40,000 citizens attended the three-day long festival, where bike plan consultants were on hand with bikeway treatments and sample bike plan facility markings that were …

Wind In My Wheels- A Journey Across America

By Richard Ostrowski        www.crazyguyonabike.com

A Roller Coaster Day of Up And Down Hills: Bracketville to CampWood
Sunday October 11, 2015
We started the morning off with a sit down breakfast at the 3 Moons restaurant. Our journey today took us 50 miles from Brackettville to Camp Wood.
The landscape was grazing land, ranches and hunting preserves. The terrain started as a climb then the road turned into a rollercoaster grade of ups and downs. We continued to deal with a very rough ride due to the shoulder and road surface being a chip seal with large pebble stones.
Passed by a very large solar farm. Solar panels extended for what seemed like a mile in length, and likely could supply the whole town of Brackettville.
Saw at least a half dozen creeks and streams. They were all dry with no sign of water. When it rains however, they likely carry a lot of water because you always see water gauges alongside of the shoulder that read up to 5 foot in depth. And there are numerous roadside signs warning that road …

Three Sisters Gave Us A Workout: Campwood to Vanderpoole
Monday October 12, 2015
We got an early start today. The temperature was predicted for a high of 93 degrees and the area was called the Hill Country. Motor cyclist come from all over the USA to ride this stretch of road between Camp Wood and Vanderpool. It contains 3 very large mountain climbs called the Three Sisters and provides some beautiful vistas overlooking mountain sides and valleys. The down hills were exhilarating but the climbs and switch backs were a real challenge on a bike.
Saw another Tarantula crossing the road. They sure are big and very ugly. Also came across a horse that got loose from its field. I scared it into a gallop across the road in front of me as I passed on by.
We stopped in the town of Leaky for lunch. The Town had several Biker bars. We stopped at one for a …

Columbus Day Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on October 12, 2015 by Rick AnkrumOctober 12, 2015

The summer like weather continues to stay around southeast Texas. Because of this I got a slightly earlier start on today’s bike ride leaving home at 10:56. The temperature registered 84 under a mostly cloudy sky. Wind was not a problem at 7 mph from the south. I rode to the north on the “New Caney – Gene Campbell Road” route for a total of 37.82 miles.

I thought schools would be closed but the New Caney ISD schools were in session while the Humble ISD schools were not. Since I left earlier I got in front of the traffic when school lets out getting home at 2:23. By then the temperature moved up to 91 degrees. Supposedly a “cool” front will pass through later tonight lowering temperatures a few degrees. We might even get some badly needed rain. This should be finished in time to ride tomorrow.

The ride on Gene Campbell Road went smoothly and I increased my speed with some protection from the trees lining the south side of the road. I stopped at the truck entrance to the WalMart distribution center.

10-12-2015 Bike ride-1

From there it was about 6 1/2 miles to the Stripes station where I stopped for a rest break. This was 26.17 miles into the ride. After eating two granola bars and a trail mix bar with a Snapple I got back on the bike for the 11+ miles to home.

The weather while I was at the Stripes station.

When I got home we started to watch the Astros in the 4th game of the ALDS.
