About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Ian Dille’s Road Back to Racing

texasbikeracing.com

Ian Dille lives in Austin, Texas. He rides for SuperSquadra and is a mentor for their Super Jets development team. He frequently writes for Bicycling magazine and his latest book “The Cyclist’s Bucket List: A Celebration of 75 Quintessential Cycling Experiences” was released in July.
How I Got Healthy
The injuries started some time in high school, if I’m honest with myself. I was captain of the cross-country team but seemed to spend more time in the trainer’s room than on the running track. By my senior year, I only ran three days a week—my coach was wise enough to hold me back, to keep me from running myself into the ground.
No one wants to think of him or herself as injury-prone. I had a high pain threshold, I wanted to believe, …

This city just looks different from the seat of a bicycle.
You see the people, the slow change in the skyline as buildings sprout beneath cranes. The birds, the squirrels, the dogs.
The quirky stuff, too. The family of metal goats that lives in front of a house on Shoal Creek Boulevard. The cyclist with a pair of dachshunds tucked into her backpack. The two-wheeled laundry delivery service.
I’ve been riding a bike to work most days for seven or …

Your First CX Race

by Bill Cullins        bcullins.blogspot.com

Cyclocross season is getting underway and the local Longhorn CX Series starts in three weeks, so some of you are getting ready for your first-ever cyclocross event.
Even if you’ve done other types of races such as mountain bike, road or triathlon events, you’ll quickly find that CX is a different beast. The good news is that there are some things you can do to make your initial cyclocross experience better.
Let’s start with training.  Although three weeks isn’t long enough to significantly improve your fitness if you’ve spent the summer doing easy social rides, you can develop skills and start upping your fitness over the next few weeks. Three workouts that will make you faster (or at least reduce …

Bicycle Facilities 101: What do the new markings mean?

bikeabledallas.com

As the Dallas bike network is growing, we’ve gotten a variety of questions from residents (or seen them posed on social media) about what the new markings mean. Since Dallas has never had much in the way of on-street bicycle markings, it’s understandable that both drivers and bicyclists may not fully understand the function of the new symbols they see on the roads. So here’s a breakdown on how they work…

Special Forces vets cycling cross-country to raise money to help families

By Drew Brooks Military editor        www.fayobserver.com

Viking warriors of Norse myths were escorted to Valhalla, a great hall ruled by Odin himself, by winged women know as valkyries.
Two modern day warriors undertaking their own “Ride to Valhalla” are traveling by bicycle.
Zach Garner and Adam Smith, Special Forces soldiers who first met in Southern Pines, are roughly half way into their cross country trek to raise money for a nonprofit that helps the families of special operations soldiers.
They left Aug. 1 from near Joint Base Lewis-McChord in Washington. The two are slated to arrive in Fayetteville next month.
Speaking from Quanah, Texas, last week, the soldiers said they were raising awareness and money for the Task Force Dagger Foundation. …

Potential move to Austin from SLC

by Particle        www.bikemojo.com

What up yall, did some searching but didn’t come up with much as far as relocation/new-to-area threads. I grew up in Dallas but have lived in CO/CA/UT for the past 20+ years. Finally thinking of coming back to TX as I just had an interview in the Austin area. I’m definitely spoiled here in SLC as I have trail access to a huge network right out the backdoor, can shuttle the Wasatch Crest, Porcupine, and others relatively close. I know TX doesn’t have that but as far as TX goes, Austin looks like the best bet for maintaining some semblance of an outdoor lifestyle. Agreed?
Anyway, couple of basic questions if ya don’t mind:  …

89-year-old veteran keeps the wheels turning

By Tammy Keith        www.arkansasonline.com

CONWAY — World War II and Korean War veteran Floyd Brantley of Conway can run circles around people decades younger than him — or at least ride a bicycle farther.
Brantley, who will be 90 on Oct. 16, said he has always enjoyed exercising and riding bicycles, but he started riding more seriously about a year ago. “I’ve been bicycling all my life — since I was 10, 12 years old. I used to ride them backward, frontward, every which way.” …

… A native of Texas, he had a brother who was killed in Guadalcanal in World War II. Brantley lived in Nacogdoches, Texas, until he was 16 and he moved with his mother to Lufkin, Texas. His parents were divorced.
He dropped out of Lufkin High School to join the military. He received a draft notice when he was in high school, but it said at the bottom that his service could be delayed while he finished school. “I did something bad,” he said. “I took scissors and cut off that part on the …

Refreshing Fall Weather Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on September 13, 2015 by Rick AnkrumSeptember 13, 2015

After the cool front arrived and moved through the temperature dropped overnight to 57 this morning. The wind was cool while I rode today on the “Oakhurst – Valley Ranch” route. When I left home at 12:05 it was 81 degrees and when I got home at 2:04 it was 86 degrees. The wind battled me over the 28.51 mile long ride. I managed to get the average speed up to 14.9 mph before it dropped as I rode through Kingwood on the way home.

This is the second time I rode this route in 2015. I shortened it because I am time limited today.

The month’s activity so far.
