About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Drop In Temperature Equals a Long Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on August 17, 2015 by Rick AnkrumAugust 17, 2015

It’s been awhile since the temperature was in the 80’s at the start of a ride. It looks like the 97 to 100+ degree days are taking a rest. When I left home on today’s ride at 10:26 it was 88 degrees. I could feel the difference riding on the streets in Kingwood as I headed to Mills Branch Drive and Ford Road to get on Loop 494. Leaving home I had one route in mind (New Caney – Gene Campbell Road) but as I rode west on Ford Road I changed to the “SR242 – Old Houston Rd – FM1314” route to get more miles (45.13 miles today) and a change of scenery. I only rode this route 2 times this year but a large chunk of the roads are part of other routes. I went past the Grand Texas site but still do not see much activity. The work is on the south side of SR 242 opposite the Grand Texas site. The Valero station at SR 242 and US59 construction continues too.

I avoided Loop 494 over the weekend due to the Grand Parkway construction closing the service road and parts of US59. I didn’t ride yesterday (Sunday) to take a rest day. It was a great day off with some rain in the late afternoon.

Except for Mills Branch Drive and Ford Road the roads include shoulders for biking on. The residential streets do not have shoulders but traffic is sparse on them since school will not start until the 24th. Most of this ride was in Montgomery County after leaving Kingwood.

With the cooler temperature and airing up the tires to 110 PSI I rode at a good pace building my average speed up to 15.5 mph at one point and the drifting down to 15.4 mph. I stopped at the Valero station at FM1485 and FM3083 for a few minutes to refill my water bottle before heading south on Old Houston Road to FM1314. That was at 24.4 miles into the ride. The rest stop came at 33.9 miles when I pulled into the Stripes station on FM1314. I got some Gatorade and sat under the gas pump canopy in the shade to eat my snacks and drink. I stayed there about 35 minutes before leaving for the 11+ miles to home. The weather screenshots at the Stripes station.

8-17-2015 Porter Weather 2

Look at the temperature! 88 degrees at 1:00 in the afternoon. For late July and all of August so far it has been 95+ degrees with a bunch of days over 100.

The ride went well until the 42 mile point when I ran into some light rain in Kingwood. The streets were wet with a few rain drops falling. Riding under tree limbs blocked the rain. As I got closer to home the streets weren’t as wet and the rain stopped. I took this opportunity to wash my bike after I got home at 2:09. The home weather when I came inside.

8-17-2015 Home Weather Finish

Not enough rain to register. Tuesday the rain probability drops and the temperature forecast goes up to 94. More biking.

Greathouse Ride

Fort Worth Bicycling Association

Sunday, August 23, 2015 8:00 am
It’s SUNDAY… time for a playful recovery ride.  Predominately flat routes drawn so you can relax and talk with your cycling friends. All routes start together in Venus, travel far east, then south, before turning west and then heading home. The 73m long route takes a unique route out to Itasca on a 10 mile stretch of smooth black top road and returns on the quaint, curly, and quiet FM67.  For you 100k obsess-inatos, there is just that a 100k. The two shorter routes of 48 and 35m have ONLY 2 HILLS (honest!). All routes display landscapes and …

Santa Fe police recover pickup believed to have fatally struck teen on bicycle

By Deborah Wrigley        abc13.com

Video

SANTA FE, TX (KTRK) — Santa Fe police have recovered a pickup truck believed to have struck and killed a teenager on a bicycle Thursday night. The driver has yet to be found and questioned.
Douglas Bleimeyer, Jr., 16, was riding with a friend, both on their bikes, on FM 646 before midnight, when a dark-colored truck struck the victim, and kept on going. Michael Jordan, Bleimeyer’s friend, was a few feet ahead when he heard a loud bang, and then saw sparks, as …

A Most Uncomfortable Trip To Comfort, Texas

roadholland.com

One of our ambassadors, Adam Shepard has been riding bikes since the 1980s. While he is a Cat 4 racer, we can tell he knows riding is more than racing. He recently sent us this recap of a ride and we thought it so good that we wanted to share. It shows that you never know what you’re in for when you set out on a bike adventure. Enjoy.
In short – what I anticipated as an easy 200 mile weekend under supposed sunny skies turned into a rainy endurance test of will. But let’s get to the details.
“Moneymaker Mike,” my trusted companion and I started off from Austin before dawn with high hopes for a great trip to Comfort, a quaint little town in the heart of Texas.
Within 15 miles of the start, however the rain started coming down. We got wet and stayed wet for the rest of the day. Our progress was slowed by wet directions (my handlebar bag leaked) and the unexpected effort it took to push a 50 pound bike/load. We were …

Announcement of our new Annual Ride

San Antonio Wheelmen

The board is pleased to announce that the Wheelmen will be hosting its own annual fund raising ride commencing in the fall of 2016!
After deciding that we should conduct an annual ride, we concluded that our event should be tied to a worthwhile cause. We are pairing with Each One Teach One of San Antonio, a non-profit adult literacy program whose mission is to “improve the literacy levels of San Antonio’s adult population through individualized curricula and one-on-one tutoring”.
Why did we choose this particular organization? The board wanted to align the club with a local group that provides a much needed contribution to the overall good of the community. In addition to affecting illiterate individuals themselves in their …

Tired Legs After All Those Riding Days in a Row

Texbiker.net Posted on August 15, 2015 by Rick AnkrumAugust 15, 2015

20 consecutive days biking finally takes it toll. My legs weren’t power enough to overcome the ENE 9 mph wind on the “Atascocita – Huffman” route. Once I reached Huffman and took a short 20 minute break (I needed to get home by 12:45) going west the wind helped my tired legs and I raised my average speed from a weak 13.9 to a somewhat satisfying 14.1 mph. Over the 29.76 mile ride whenever I came to an incline I bogged down to 11 or 12 mph with no power. I think it is time for a recovery day.

The weather felt a tiny bit cooler when I left home at 10:06 ( I should’ve left an hour earlier) and this was reflected when I took these screenshots in Huffman during the rest stop at 18.2 miles.

8-15-2015 Huffman Weather 1
8-15-2015 Huffman Weather 2

I haven’t seen 88 degrees at noon in many many weeks. By the time I got home at 12:49 though it warmed up a few degrees.

8-15-2015 Home Weather Finish

This was the 5th time I rode this route in 2015. I use this route when I am limited on time. (See the table below)

Mileage standings:

  • 216.09 miles this week
  • 544.28 miles for the month
  • 4666 miles for 2015
  • 412 miles to reach my August goal of 956
