About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Late Saturday night Brendan was riding home with his wife, JoJo, heading south on Lamar when a car struck him from behind and fled the scene. Brendan got banged up pretty bad. Brendan is the Fastest Bike Mechanic in Texas. Proven twice by his consecutive State Championship titles.
He’s incredibly kind. Once, while commuting, he saw a raccoon get run over by …

Negligence Per Se in Texas Bicycle Accident

By Carabin & Shaw, P.C        www.texasinjurylawyersblog.com

In the recent appellate case of United Parcel Service, Inc. v. Rankin, the plaintiff and his family sued UPS and one of its drivers. The case arose when the driver parked his UPS vehicle in front of a house to make a delivery on his normal route. He intended to park briefly and left the vehicle partly in a lane of traffic with the hazard lights on. The view was unobstructed for 2,000 feet, but the vehicle was brown and stopped under a tree with brown leaves against the backdrop of a brown hill.
The plaintiff was traveling home by bike and rode into the back of the parked UPS vehicle and suffered severe injuries. He didn’t remember what happened, and the driver testified he didn’t see the accident. When the police came, the hazard lights of the UPS vehicle were still flashing. The …

Quick-Thinking Cyclist Helps Nab Two Suspected Robbers

By Amanda Guerra        www.nbcdfw.com

Video

Quick thinking by a Lake Highlands cyclist helped Dallas Police nab two suspected robbers early Tuesday morning, officials say.
Ken Coutant was riding his bike near the intersection of Overwood Road and Meadowglen Drive when he said a car drove up behind him and nearly hit him.
“They just kinda pushed me to the curb with their car and jumped out, and the guy had a handgun. He pointed it right at my face and said, ‘Give me your phone,’ basically,” Coutant said.
The cyclist said the men …

The Sandwich Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on August 10, 2015 by Rick AnkrumAugust 10, 2015

I named today’s ride the sandwich ride. It is sandwiched in between the air conditioning repairman’s visit and going to the Harris County Appraisal District office to protest our home’s appraised value. I wasn’t sure how long the A/C repair would take but it was fairly short. Our A/C has not been putting out cold air for a week or more and finally quite altogether yesterday. I turned off the unit and we bought a window unit to hold us until the repairman could get here. He was quick. He added some Freon but there may be a leak in the coil. If it gets hot again he will be back to check the coil for a leak. I tried to change the appraisal appointment but I had already moved it once and not more changes are allowed. That meant I could only ride the “Atascocita – Huffman” route for 30.43 miles. That gives me enough time to get cleaned up and drive to the northwest side of Houston. I left home at 10:44.

My wife and I camped out in our family room last night close to the window A/C unit. It took awhile for it to cool things down from almost 90 degrees inside. Surprisingly the little unit did a great job.

I stopped at the Huffman Chevron at 17.8 miles into the ride for a rest stop. The heat was starting to build and the perspiration was flowing. The Powerade dispenser was empty so I made do with an orange soda. That is the first carbonated drink I have had in about a year. After drinking it I told myself I should have drank ice water. The sugar powered me all the way home. The weather while I was at the Chevron station.

8-10-2015 Huffman Weather 1
8-10-2015 Huffman Weather 2

The extra sugar inspired me to add an extra mile when I got back to Kingwood. I learned that W. Lake Houston Parkway south bound repairs began this morning and I may need to alter my route some. They worked on the north bound lanes last week.

The weather forecast calls for 100+ for the next few days with a very slight drop on Thursday and Friday to 99. I plan on biking unless the A/C repairman needs to visit again. I got back home at 1:23 and the home weather below. Today marks the 15th consecutive day of biking.

Does no one care about an injured rider on the trail?

by losojos        bicycleaustin.info

Granted, I was passed by more joggers (a runner basically caused this) than cyclists, but as I stood bleeding from my face, every single person simply passed by with eyes straight forward.
I had just face planted after dodging a runner, then having my front wheel catch the small gap of a runoff, causing me to endo, full force onto my face. I don’t think any passerby could have done anything, but, if I were to see someone injured, I would stop to at least offer something. I still had to bike 2 miles to …

Lots of Shade on the Trails

Texbiker.net Posted on August 9, 2015 by Rick AnkrumAugust 9, 2015

A change of pace with today’s ride. For the first time since the 3rd of June I rode my Motobecane 700HT MTB on the Kingwood greenbelt trails. It was different riding in shade most of the time. Amongst the trees the wind isn’t moving as much but the shade offsets that. Without any rain to speak of I was able to ride two sections of dirt bordering the drainage canal between Northpark Drive and Kingwood Drive and the one in Mills Branch. I had to detour around the section of W. Lake Houston Parkway that is being extended to Mills Branch Drive. When it is finished the greenbelt trail will go under the road for safety. A new section of Kingwood is being built north of Mills Branch Drive.

Several other people were out riding on the trails. Some on MTB others on road bikes and kiddie bikes. Coming around corners and intersections of trails I try to watch for others but I am not sure they do.

The hot and dry weather continues. The weather at my home weather station when I began at 12:16 (left) and finished at 1:58 (right).

8-9-2015 Home Weather Start
8-9-2015 Home Weather Finish

Today’s ride is number 14 in a row. 128 rides in 2015. Mileage after today’s ride:

  • 249.78 miles this week
  • 328.19 miles in August
  • 4450 miles in 2015

628 miles left to reach my August goal of 956 miles.

More hot and dry weather coming up. I will be back on the Stradalli road bike.
