About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Tour de El Paso draws range of cycling talent

Sports Town El Paso        www.sportstownelpaso.com

SUNDAY PHOTO GALLERY

There were veteran riders, there were beginning riders. Whatever their level of cycling skills, they all agreed on one thing: Tour de El Paso is an event worth participating in and for the spectators, worth attending.
In its second year, Tour de El Paso met heavy winds early Saturday morning but that didn’t diminish the energy of the riders and the enthusiasm of the crowd that cheered them on.
“It was a really good experience,” said Johnathan Mendoza, who finished third in the …

SILVER SPRING, Md. (BRAIN) — The Sports & Fitness Industry Association published the first 25 of its 94 single sport and fitness participation reports Monday. These reports provide an analysis and breakdown of participation demographics by specific sport or fitness activity, including bicycling, triathlon and stationary cycling.
“These reports allow people to drill down into specific sports’ data. The detailed dissection of participation demographics provides key figures that our companies can utilize for their business needs,” said Cameron Jacobs, SFIA’s manager of communications and research. “The specific information allows industry …

It’s Time

by Bike Noob        bikenoob.com

It’s been awhile in coming, but I have finally concluded it’s time. This is the end of Bike Noob.
I’ve enjoyed writing the blog over the last seven years, watching the page views rise, and fall, and rise again. I’ve gotten to vicariously know some of you from your comments on my posts.
But lately, I’ve been less than enthusiastic when I realize it’s time to write another post. I’ve stockpiled ideas, and pulled them out when I needed them, although more often than not, the blog is a reflection of what I’m thinking about at the time I write it. When I started, I had a plan to post three times a week — Sunday, Tuesday, and Thursday. I stuck to that plan for longer than I thought possible. But sometime in about 2013, I fell out of that routine. Missed a post? Not a big deal — you can write one tomorrow.
Except that when tomorrow came, I’d be in the same …

2nd Annual Uptown Ciclovia

Did you make it out for the Uptown Ciclovia on Sunday? The thunderstorms and rain tapered off just in time for the event to go off without a hitch! With a route adjustment this year to accommodate construction, Olive Street proved to be a beneficial change of scene.
Thank you to all the volunteers, participants, sponsors, and organizers of this great event!

Leading by example

By Lisa Mitchell-Bennett        www.brownsvilleherald.com

Jerry Ruiz is a low-key, laid back guy. But his actions speak louder than his words and he has had a large impact on our community. Ruiz is a teacher at Russell Elementary School in West Brownsville, but is also known in Brownsville as “the guy who bikes everywhere”.
National Bike to Work Day this past Friday was like any other day for Jerry. He hopped on his bike and traversed Brownsville, arriving at school on time to teach a classroom full of kids.
“Brownsville is really an easy place to bike for a lot of reasons. The streets are well connected, and there are so many alternative routes to avoid heavier traffic. The city has been working hard to add more lanes and protection so we can …

Cycling Space City        cyclingspacecity.blogspot.com

Today we did our usual Sunday morning ride out of the Katy Mills Mall only the ride got quite a bit more interesting.  As we were riding back to the mall we had a confrontation with a guy in a pickup. We were heading North on Spring Green Blvd and approaching Falcon Landing Blvd where we would make a right turn.  I should note that both roads have two lanes in each direction and this was Sunday morning around 10 AM.  The light was red at the intersection and we were riding two abreast.  The pickup behind us honked his horn at us just before we got to the red …

Bicyclists of all ages gather for 3rd Annual Family Bike Ride
HARLINGEN — Aida Rocha sat on her bicycle Saturday morning at McKelvey Park as loud hip hop music energized the crowd.
“I’m interested in riding my bike again in a safe environment,” said Rocha 50, who was at the Third Annual Family Bike Ride sponsored by the Harlingen-San Benito Metropolitan Planning Organization.
She was one of about 250 people who’d come to the event where they would ride a …

Wasp Spray and Rain Won Until Today’s Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on May 16, 2015 by Rick AnkrumMay 16, 2015

Back on May 6th I thought my next bike ride would be on May 11th. That did not happen. My wife and I flew to Washington DC on May 7th for my nephew’s wedding and returned on Sunday May 10th. I think the plane brought rain along with it or it was probably already here. The rain started Monday and didn’t stop until today. During that time my sinus decided to cause a problem and I couldn’t ride even if it didn’t rain. I think the culprit was spraying wasp killer in the house when we got home from Washington DC. My sinus are almost recovered and a ride today was what they needed to speed their return to normal.

I am enjoying bike race overload this week watching the Giro d’ Italia in the morning and the Tour of California in the late afternoon. If I couldn’t ride I at least watched a bunch of bike racers doing it.

With my sinus problem not quite over I took it easy today on the 33.12 mile long “Atascocita – Walden – Huffman” route. It took me to around the 20 mile point to get my average speed to 14.0 mph. Some of the slowness was me but the strong wind didn’t help any. The south wind was 16 mph with 23 mph gusts (Bush Airport weather station numbers) and I could feel it whenever the road turned south. Overall I averaged 14.4 mph with the high being 14.5 mph. The mostly cloudy sky held the sun back some but it is starting to warm up now that we are halfway into May. 87 degrees meant short sleeve jersey time. I wore my Ohio State Buckeye jersey but not for any reason other than it was close to the end of the rotation spot in my closet. It is bad when my jerseys outnumber my other shirts. Bike shorts and denim shorts are about the same number.

The ride started at 11:09 and I got back home at 2:05. I did take a break at the Huffman Chevron. Sitting in the shade eating a snack and drinking Powerade revived me for the 11 mile to home leg. I did struggle with the wind riding over Lake Houston on FM1960. No protection out in the middle of the lake. There was a sign in Huffman alerting drivers that FM1485 was closed at the East Fork of the San Jacinto River. All of the rain has flooded some roads. Lake Houston is very high. The fishing pier at the Lake Houston Marina is almost under water. Another foot and it will be under the water.

Other people were out biking today. I saw 4 recreation bikers along my route and several casual bikers too. Recreation bikers wear helmets and bike clothing, casual bikers do not wear helmets and biking clothes.

I am getting close to the miles I rode in May 2014; I am at 254 miles this year versus 265 miles lat May. With 15 potential biking days left I should surpass May 2014 and gain some of the miles I didn’t ride earlier this year. Tomorrow’s weather looks dry and I plan on biking.
