About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Cyclists gearing up for Tour de Houston ride

www.chron.com

About 5,000 people are expected to take part Sunday in the Tour de Houston, a morning bike ride with routes for beginning to advanced cyclists.
All three rides – which cover 20, 40 and 60 miles – will start from Hermann Square at City Hall and head west, then north. The longest route, which goes as far as Houston National Cemetery, is a training ride for next month’s BP MS 150.
Cyclists will travel on Allen Parkway, Washington Avenue and …

Spinlister to launch de-centralized bike share program

by BRAIN Staff        www.bicycleretailer.com

AUSTIN, Texas (BRAIN) — Peer-to-peer global bike share provider Spinlister has launched a decentralized bike share model at the South by Southwest music festival in Austin, Texas, that takes place from March 13-22.
The new bike share system does not utilize hubs or rental stations where bikes have to be picked up or returned. Instead, users can ride, park and lock the bikes via the Spinlister mobile app. Existing Spinlister users can buy the bikes, which are manufactured by Dutch company VanMoof.
“This new decentralized bike share model will take the traditional system of a central hub or station and turn it on its head. From a renter’s perspective, they can simply use the Spinlister app to locate a bike, book it, unlock it and ride away,” said Andrew Batey, Spinlister’s chief marketing officer. “From an owner’s …

Pedaling America: Buddies set off on cross-country bicycling trip across United States

Article by: TONY BROWN , Special to the Star Tribune        www.startribune.com

This two-month trip across the United States has been sold to our families and friends as a kind of pre-geezer vision quest.
So we’re headed off Friday, me and another 60-year-old guy, to ride our bicycles 3,100 miles across this great nation of ours. We’ve planned a trans-southerly route starting Sunday from the beach in San Diego to the salt marshes of Savannah, Ga. — avoiding cyclophobic stretches of Texas if possible.
Why the journey? For starters, we’re both older than the chief justice of the United States. What exactly are we waiting for?
This projected two-month trip has been sold to our families and friends as a kind of pre-geezer vision quest; a life-stage spiritual mission with a purity of purpose usually associated with postgraduate …

Ready2Roll MS150 Training: Week 7

the surly biker        thesurlybiker.wordpress.com

Sorry this post is so late – heck it’s almost time for the next ride. It’s been a busy week.
Last Saturday we headed up to New Waverly, which is just south of Huntsville for a good practice ride. The area has many rolling hills and a few good climbs as well. Not to mention a ride through Sam Houston National Forest. I’ve been up in this area before – last year for the Huntsville Raven’s Revenge ride (coincidentally my first organized t-shirt ride). Also coincidentally, the Raven’s Ride was going on the same day – and our routes overlapped a little. I pedaled through some familiar areas.
I left my GPS at home and my wife’s didn’t track the whole route so here’s a general map of the area we rode through. We started at the bottom right in town, and crossed I-45, then went through the forest to the west then turned north toward the south side of Huntsville. We came …

3rd Street Cycle Track Blocked Off…Because Why?

Austinonabike.com

This just crossed the Bicycle Advisory Committee email list:
Last week they finished construction on both directions of the 3rd St separated bike lane between Congress and Trinity.  Construction is still underway west of Congress.  I’ve been taking it on my commute the last week and it’s been great.
This morning, everything was fine from Congress to San Jac, but they had the last block before the convention center closed off to traffic (San Jac to Trinity).  They put up cones and tape blocking entry to the bike lane on one side, and had a police car blocking the bike lane on the other side – see attached photos. Since San Jac runs south, I had to divert onto a sidewalk and then get into traffic on 4th St.
With all of the folks renting Bcycles and riding to SxSW, it seems like exactly the time to keep this part of the cycle track open.  Downtown traffic is a complete gridlock now on 4th and 5th, so forcing cyclists onto streets and sidewalks is asking for trouble.  I spoke with the officer blocking the street and he said it would probably be like this for all of next week.
I might understand why you wouldn’t want auto traffic going …

Got You Covered. Talking Shop With Ellum Bag Works’ Jewel Ybarra.

By Javier Fuentes        centraltrack.com

Sure, the Metroplex was just covered in ice, but spring is fast approaching. And for those of us who were unwilling to leave the house no matter how many accessories we had on, this is great news: The weather will soon be nice enough for us to take our bikes out for a spin around White Rock Lake or other Dallas neighborhoods.
But will you be properly geared up? While everyone always mentions the importance of wearing a helmet while riding, people seem to forget the cycling cap as must-have accessory. They help cover your head against the elements: When it’s cold, they act as …

Austin retailer merges with Texas Endurance Sports

by BRAIN Staff        www.bicycleretailer.com

WACO, Tex. (BRAIN) – Texas Endurance Sports, which operates five Bicycle World and BW Multi-Sport Pro Shop retail locations throughout the state, has completed a merger with Austin multisport retailer Jack Murray, owner of Jack & Adam’s Bicycles.
Murray will join the executive team as president of retail operations for TES. There are no plans to rebrand Jack & Adam’s, or change the product lineup, and Murray said that nothing will change for loyal Jack & Adam’s customers.
“We will continue to remain active in the Austin community hosting weekly rides, clinics, and various event sponsorships,” Murray said.
Todd Behringer and Scott James formed TES in June 2014. TES acquired the Bicycle World chain in the …

Maybe I Need to Rethink My Plans …

Pit’s Fritztown News

… for the LBJ 100 Bicycle Tour on Saturday, March 28, out of the LBJ Ranch in Stonewall/Texas. For that event, I’ve signed up for the 42-mile route [the previous link actually leads to my records from the Tour de Ted on October 12 of last year, but that route is the same as the LBJ 42-miler], but today, here on Lower Crabapple, I was hard put to do just 12. Agreed, the maximum grade was 12%, whereas at the LBJ it’ll be 7% max, but still, 42 miles are 42 miles, and thus the total ascent will be much more than today. So, what to do? The 30-mile route at the LBJ isn’t really easier. Well, it …

Daylight savings means more daylight for cycling

The recent time change and increasing daylight present another opportunity for involvement, in this case with cycling. Team Life Cyclers is hosting a series of free weekend bike clinics for riders training for the April 11 Tour de Cure, or to gain skills to join local group training rides.
“If you’ve ridden as a kid or teen but haven’t ridden in a while, this is a way to get a little confidence by getting comfortable controlling your bike and making quick changes in direction,” said Deidre Hall, a clinic leader.

Biking the Bayfront

by  Omar C. Garcia        gobeyondblog.com

Almost fifty-five years have passed since I first visited Corpus Christi. My sister and I were just kids when our folks introduced us to the Sparkling City by the Sea on a family vacation. I confess that I was a bit frightened by the vast expanse of water that seemed to dissolve into the distant horizon a million miles away. And I was also concerned because my sister’s nickname is Bonnie and I remember my Mom singing the old Scottish folk song, “My Bonnie Lies Over the Ocean.” I was afraid that at any moment a wave might scoop Bonnie up in its foamy arms and carry her to a place far …

Central West End resident Gail Velten is biking 3,000 miles across the country to raise money for a cause that’s close to her heart.
Velten is cycling to help save homeless pets. Her longtime friend, Marla Drewel-Lynch, who is accompanying her on the journey, is raising funds for Camp Rainbow, which serves children with cancer and blood-related diseases. …

… The tour will take the cyclists through California, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama before reaching Florida. …

Tour of Corsicana Preview

Words and photos compliments of Race Director, Zac Lytle        texasbikeracing.com

The fourth annual Tour of Corsicana is upon us! This weekend racers will be challenged with three epic stages of time-based stage racing. Racing kicks off Saturday with a five mile point-to-point time trial. The course is slightly rolling and frequently has a cross-tail wind.
Things get wild on Saturday night in historic downtown Corsicana. Racing, beer, and live music will be on tap making this a great time for both racers and spectators.   Leading up to the race, the City will be hosting a classic car show from 12pm to 2pm. The show will include live music, food trucks, and classic cars. Racing kicks off at 2:30 with the free kid’s race. Kids will have a chance to win one of three bikes that will be raffled off directly following their race. The Beat Down on Beaton Streetâ„¢ USAC racing continues from …

Your Guide to SXSW 2015 On A Bike

Austin On A Bike        austinonabike.com

Whether you’re a year-round Austin native or just in town for our yearly schmooze-fest booze-fest, chances are you may find yourself careening (likely drunkenly) around town on two or three non-motorized wheels.
Here’s what you need to know about getting around town on a bicycle…how to get a bike, how to secure it, how to deal with downtown, and what roads are best.
So, you don’t have a bike, you say?
Okay, so you’re showing up in town without a bike. What are your options?
1. Buy a beater bike from Austin Yellow Bike – There are lots of rental options out there, which I’ll outline here, but with this option you get a bike of your own that you can do with as you please. Not only that, but you support a great, local bike cooperative that works to get butts on bikes year round in Austin. And at the end, if you so please, you can pass that bike off to …

Síclovía officials set sights on safer roads, community

By Jeremy T. Gerlach        www.mysanantonio.com

With Síclovía quickly approaching on March 29, YMCA and city officials are casting the fitness celebration as a chance to bring public attention to road safety.
The biannual event, which drew about 68,000 bikers, walkers and skaters to Broadway and Midtown last September, is expected to draw about 50,000-plus to Southtown this month.
Participants will wind 2.7 miles starting at St. Mary’s Street where it intersects with South Alamo Street, then down Roosevelt Avenue to Steves Avenue and on to Mission Concepción. All the streets will be closed to motor traffic. Participants can expect to see a series of bike demos, …

Texas Bicycling News Roundup March 10th

Texbiker.net Posted on March 10, 2015 by Rick AnkrumMarch 10, 2015

Journal – Wednesday, March 4, 2015 (Day 23)

purebound.wordpress.com

Wednesday, March 4, 2015 (Day 23)
Start: Winters, TX
End: Sweetwater, TX
Weather: Ice & Snow
Miles: 48+
Today was miserable.

I made a mistake today not checking the weather properly. I knew the forecast for today was to be colder, but the last knowledge I had of today’s weather was from two days ago when I was in Austin, TX. Without a cell signal or internet, I left this morning at 10am and the temperature was 50 degrees. I should have been aware of the conditions before I left Winters, TX. I should have at …

Fossil 50 Recap – 2nd Place Dale Dawson

by Paul Dentel        www.wattposseracing.com

What a great weekend in Glen Rose, Tx at the Fossil 50!  We started  out crossing the Paluxy river and then were lead out across a grass field.  After the river Paul and I were close to the front and ready to go!  Well I thought I was.  Following the field, the course climbed for quite awhile up some gnar rocky double-track.  And oh man did the pace quicken!  A group at the very front blasted off faster than I had even imagined straight up this steady, long climb.  I settled in a small 2nd group and just kept the leaders in sight.  The start was so fast in fact, within miles strong riders I knew were popping off the front.  And then the dreaded.  I see Paul pull off with …

Heat Consequences of Aero Road Helmets

By: Zack Allison BS. Source Endurance Senior Coach        texasbikeracing.com

While sitting on the couch between races at the 2013 Gateway Cup, the Think Finance p/b Trek Stores Cycling Team and two Source Endurance coaches jumped into a discussion on aero road helmets. The weather for this particular race weekend in Saint Louis was an average of around 100F at each of the races. The major question was if the aerodynamic benefit of aero helmets outweighs the power loss from overheating on a hot day. We decided to try and find studies on the subject of whether aero helmets cause power loss due to overheating. We knew it would be a task to find applicable studies on overheating from a specific type of helmet but we did our best.
First we looked at the aerodynamic benefit of aero helmets. The study Benchmark of Aerodynamic Cycling Helmets Using a Refined Wind Tunnel Test Protocol for Helmet Drag Research by Stephanie Sidelko of MIT, compared 10 different aero helmets to a standard road helmet on …
