About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

USA cyclo-cross championships delayed 24 hours

Officials stop Sunday racing after surface damage at Zilker Park
The USA cyclo-cross championships in Austin, Texas, have been delayed 24 hours due to the effects of heavy rain and damage to the grass and surface at Zilker Park.

Bike-share company puts new spin on peer-to-peer rentals

www.cbsnews.com

(Video)
There are an estimated 100 million bicycle owners in the U.S.
If you’re one of them, it may be parked in a garage collecting dust, but you can make money on that bike when you’re not using it, CBS News’ David Begnaud reports.
Inside a tiny studio apartment in southern California, at least six employees maintain a website and a mobile app for a global bike-sharing company called Spinlister.
In 90 seconds or less, anyone can list their bike on Spinlister.com through the app or website, set a rental price and select accessories to include with the rental.
Spinlister’s cheapest rental is in Palo Alto, California, for $1 a day. A four-person family bike in San Francisco is the most expensive daily rental at $400.
Worldwide, there are 15,000 people who …

Mastering the cold at CX Nationals Day 2

AUSTIN, Texas (Jan. 8, 2015) – All masters women’s 40-plus and masters men’s 50-plus divisions competed for 14 Stars-and-Stripes jerseys at the second day of the 2015 USA Cycling Cyclo-cross National Championships on Thursday in Austin, Texas, battling unusually chilly conditions and the challenging Zilker Park course.

Kristin Weber (Boulder, Colo./Boulder Cycle Sport-YogaGlo) topped the women’s 40-44 field in 45:56, pacing Melissa Barker’s (Longmont, Colo./Evol Elite Racing) 46:37 effort and Kristal Boni’s (Erie, Colo./Rapid Racing) 47:05 time.

“It was a little bit of cat and mouse with Melissa Barker and I,” Weber said. “She made a small mistake and I got a four-second gap and just felt like that was my moment. I had a lap-and-a-half to the finish; I went for it and had a lucky, good day. It felt really good.”

Getting acquainted with Big Bend on a mountain hike

By Mike Snyder        www.chron.com

Last September, three days after my 60th birthday, I took a five-mile hike in the Chisos Mountains in Big Bend National Park. My inexperience quickly became apparent as I trudged along the rugged, stony path: I hadn’t brought enough water, my shoes (old sneakers) were inadequate, and I had failed to account for the fact that the return trip would be uphill.
I had, at least, applied sunscreen and worn a hat. And I started early, though not early enough to avoid temperatures that reached the 90s before I emerged from the wilderness, sweating and sore, and stumbled back to my room at the lodge where I was staying.
Although I’m a lifelong Texan, this was my first visit to Big Bend. On my way there, I spent two days in the …

My Ultimate Challenge – UMCA Highest Annual Mileage Record

www.tarzanrides.com

At some point in your life you will be challenged to do something that at first glance appears to be completely unattainable.  I have had these challenges come up over the years and with the planning, perseverance and the support of my family, friends and the universe  I have been able to achieve everything I have set out to do.  Now I have been presented with my ultimate challenge: to cycle more than 75,000 miles in 1 year (that is more than 3 times around the world, 25 times across the U.S)  or simply 206 miles per day.
“If anyone can take on this challenge, it is Kurt Searvogel. He has the stamina, the drive, and the right amount of obsessiveness to not only start such an endeavor, but also see it through to it’s completion.”- Nick Gerlich RAAM finisher, owner of Florida and Texas Hell Week
When I first looked at this problem I thought  why would I be willing to give up a year of my life to do nothing but ride my bike.   Then I realized that most of the friends I have ride and …

Cycling: Endurance cyclist Kurt Searvogel attempts 75,000 miles

by Michelle Williams        www.clarionledger.com

How many miles did you drive in your car this year? I did not travel as much this year as in past years, but I typically average 20,000 miles. I am sure some of you who travel extensively for a living put more than 50,000 miles on your vehicles. But what if I were to tell you that Arkansas endurance cyclist Kurt Searvogel is going to attempt to ride his bicycle more than 75,000 miles in one year? Don’t pull out your calculator — I can already tell you that to ride 75,000 miles in one year, Kurt will have to ride his bike an average of 206 miles a day for 365 days!
Searvogel is going after the Highest Annual Mileage record set in 1939 by Tommy Godwin — the record has an interesting history, and I’ll blog about …

My Top Two Cycling Goals for 2015

by Ray Garza        rgvcycling.com

It’s January 2015 and the start of a new year. Like everyone else, I too am reflecting on what I resolve to do for the year. There is the usual lose weight and get fitter but there is something more that I would like to do. Cycle a 100 miles (century ride) and see more of the valley on a bike are the top two cycling goals I would like to do for the year 2015.
I’ve always wanted to join the Century club ever since I tried the Hotter ‘n Hell 100 in Wichita Falls, Texas many years ago. I completed about 75 miles and had to stop because they were closing the course. Rules! Ever since then I wanted to try again but life keeps getting in the way. There are a ton of excuses that I could come up with but …

Masters divisions wrap up on CX Nationals Day 3

www.usacycling.org

AUSTIN, Texas (Jan. 9, 2015) – The final six masters divisions of the 2015 USA Cycling Cyclo-cross National Championships were settled and collegiate competition began on Friday at Zilker Park, as the five-day competition passed the midpoint in Austin, Texas.

An already technical course at Zilker Park became even more difficult when pre-race showers muddied the undulating turns, challenging the final six masters divisions and the co-ed collegiate team relay.

Kate Powlison (Boulder, Colo./Evol Elite Racing) won the first race of the day on the muddy course, taking the women’s 30-34 division in 44:44. Jenna Blandford (Louisville, Ky./VO2) took second in 45:07 and Leslie Timm (Chelmsford, Mass.) rounded out the …

2014 TURKEY ROLL

Denton Kiwanis Club

Let’s REMEMBER LAST YEAR: November 22, 2014 for the 32nd Turkey Roll Bicycle Rally:
The 2014 Turkey Roll is history, but the good news keeps coming in. Over 600 signed up… however the weather kept our numbers down to 220 very tuff riders! Our 5 NEW Bill Utter Truck Sag wagons got lots of use, as riders succumbed to the Tough Turkey Roll conditions. In spite of the “foul” conditions, we still managed to raised OVER $9,000 for our charities. Thanks for your support!

Cleburne State Park. My first videos…

by keithrad        forums.mtbr.com

Got out yesterday, 1/6/15, in the awesome weather we experienced before this cold front hit today. Got to play with my new toys in the form of a Go-Pro white 3, and some (like new) 2014 Easton Haven wheels. The wheels are an awesome upgrade to my stock DT Swiss X 1900’s that had rear freewheel issues. After the warranty replacement wheel crapped out, I went a different direction and found these Haven’s on ebay for $250! Couldn’t believe the great deal, and now even more so that they are such an overall improvement in weight and performance.
So here is my attempt at using the Go-Pro. Please be gentle, I am new at videoing, and I’m out of shape! Oh the holidays…
The trail network consists of 3 areas. The inner loop White-tail Hollow trail(tight and twisty wooded easy) / outer loop Coyote Run/Fossil Ridge trail (lots of roller coaster ups and downs more rocks) / what we used to call …

Austin, TX – Despite the frigid cold weather, the big team winner of the 50-54 Women’s Masters race was California-based Team Rambuski Law, with two of their members, Karen Brems and Katrina Baumsteiger able to land on the podium. Karen Hogan (Team Kappius) was able to take second place in between them.
In the 55-59 race, New Jersey racer Christina Perkins (Team ProPower Coaching) was able to power her way to a …

Price Takes the Jersey for the Masters Men 55-59 at the 2015 National Championships: Race Report and Full Results

by Cindy Brennan        www.cxmagazine.com

Al Blanchard (Finkraft Cycling) took the hole shot, leading the eighty starters in the 55-59 men’s race onto the course. By the time the first half lap was through, however, Thomas Price (Trek Cyclocross Collective) had broken away from the race. On the chase were teammates Henry Kramer and Norman Kreiss (California Giant Berry Farms/Specialized), followed by Robert Downs (Planet Bike).
Blanchard fell back with a mechanical issue as Price’s lead grew to ten, twenty, and up to forty seconds over Kreiss and Kramer. A crash caused …

Moore Wins Masters Women 45-49 at the 2015 National Championships: Race Report and Full Results

by Andrew Reimann        www.cxmagazine.com

(Austin, TX)-Jennifer Herrell-Rhoades (Midwest Cycling Trek Stores of KC) had an impressive start, gunning to the front of the pack after the whistle. Right on her heels, Texas rider Catherine Moore (Squadra Di Servitori) not only stayed close behind on the early stretch, but took over the race within a half lap and created a huge gap.
Meanwhile, New Jersey rider Stacey Barbossa (Midatlantic Colavita) was caught up in early traffic with Katina Walker (Verge/VeloNRS), and both big cyclocross names were relegated to the back of the …

Cozza Comes from Behnd to Win Men 50-54 at the 2015 National Championships: Race Report

www.cxmagazine.com

Sam Morse (Corner Cycles) took to the course for the final race of day two of 2015 Cyclocross Nationals. Despite the challenging course, there wasn’t much separation in the huge field until after the completion of the final lap. Morse gained a gap, chased by Todd Cassan (Rally Sports Cycling Team), Craig Cozza (UPMC/Pro Bikes), James Coats (California Giant Cycling), Don Seib (Bikeman.com), and Ralf Warmuth (Team SRG).
Morse and Coats worked together to gain a lead on the field, with Cozza a few seconds back chasing back after …
