Just a few weekends left, and local promoter Rolando Roman wants you to keep your form. The final race of the ATXCXCup is upon us, as are the last opportunities to toe the line in 2014.
Let’s get into it.
Say, Ro, how would you describe the terrain at the Quest Park?
This is a new venue; Quest ATX is a new cable assist water ski and wake board park in Austin TX. It is private property with ½ mile of the course covered with elevation change, a fast grass section, a twisty tree section, barriers, double pit and a …
The campaigning is done, the votes are counted, and Austin’s new 10-1 City Council is ready to take their seats in January. BikeTexas congratulates all the new council members on their successful run for office. We are very excited that many pro-bike candidates are now on the council, including those we endorsed in districts 2, 3, 4, 5, and 7. We are also convinced that current CM Tovo and Mayor-Elect Adler will be great for biking and walking based on their campaigns, their comments, and …
When we started Bike Friendly Richardson, in December 2009, our original goal was to follow in the footsteps of Bike Friendly Oak Cliff. Although our core beliefs are still the same, over the last 5 years, our focus has evolved to better fit the needs of the cycling community in Richardson.
We are a group of bicycle advocates promoting the continued creation of better cycling facilities and improved infrastructure in Richardson. Our main focus is on education and increasing the ridership of those wanting to ride for transportation and pleasure over sport.
Our mission: …

First off I want to say that I’m not the type of person to go off on a tangent about my life’s story, especially to people I don’t know on a blog. So even with this little insight into who I am there is nothing more personal about me than what’s already available online. I don’t want to be at the center of my own writing material, because that would seem self serving. However, I do think readers should know a little bit about me, how I came to enjoying cycling so much and why I started this blog.
My real name is Jonathan. Johnny is a version of my name friends and family would call me when I was growing up, so that is also my alias I go by for my blog. I’m almost 30 years old and I have been living in North Texas for most of my life. I am originally from a …

Congress passed the 2015 budget bill (Cromnibus) over the weekend, which includes a safety performance measure for bicycles and pedestrians– a measure that people who ride bikes have been asking for during 2014. Your voice has made a difference– thank you!
We’d like to thank Texas’ Rep. Michael McCaul, who at BikeTexas’ request was one of the original bill sponsors for safety performance measures. Rep. McCaul’s support for government accountability for all forms of transportation sends a clear signal that he is …

This weekend, the Texas cyclocross community suffered in the most beautiful way possible. The Waco race is always a season highlight, promising to be equally amounts painful and fulfilling. When the folks at Texas Cross Syndicate get together with the fast racers of Squadra Di Servitori, incredible world events happen. Unlike last year’s freezing cold mud fest, the Gods of Texas Cyclocross granted us clear skies and highs in the 70s. With prime Texas Cross weather, numerous racers toed the line: ready.
From the moment each whistle blew, each rider sprinted towards the first hill, minds set on the holeshot. The starting section of pavement took you over a speed bump, into a right turn and then onto the first …

I started today in Kingsville, TX, and ended 83 miles later in Rockport. I had to take a frustratingly circuitous route in order to avoid Corpus Christie. A straight shot through the city would have required lots of riding on urban freeways where bikes are not permitted. It would have also required a number of dangerous bridge crossings. The city is also a bit of an industrial wasteland, so I wanted to avoid this after biking through a similar refinery-scape in Port Arthur, TX. …

I was part of a 25-person group of San Angelo residents who met on June 4th, 2004 to begin discussing current and future needs for non-motorized transportation infrastructure such as bike/pedestrian paths and trails in San Angelo.
This forward-thinking group realized that San Angelo lagged far behind other communities related to bike paths, sidewalks and related venues for cycling, running and fitness.
Subsequent meetings of that group, working with the regional Metropolitan Planning Organization, resulted in San Angelo’s City Council contracting with the Wilber Smith Associates consultant group to develop a comprehensive Bike/Pedestrian plan for the city (sanangelompo.org/plans.php).
The consultant group’s report listed the construction of a multiuse bike and pedestrian trail through the Red Arroyo ‘greenbelt’ area as being one of the first projects that San Angelo residents wanted the city to complete.
More than a decade after the initial focus group meeting was held, construction has …

Spring Creek’s white sandy beaches are lined with trees, some dating back to the Akokisa Indians, along with a plethora of native plants. It’s a largely untouched haven with a diverse collection of wildlife.

Those well-versed in 90’s hip hop should immediate recognize the reference in the title. Those lacking rap knowledge might want to check this out so that we are all on the same page. Anyone in his/her mid 30s should recognize this song from any middle or high school dance he/she ever attended. Although the track is called “Whoomp! (There it is)”, it actually sounds more like “Whoop! (There it is)”. When I found the first Whooping cranes of the day, I could not help but think “Whoop – There it is!”. Finding the cranes today was very straightforward. I biked the ~9 miles from Rockport, TX to Goose Island. I immediately headed for the “Big Tree”, a very large and ancient oak that guards a particular field that the Whooping cranes frequent. When I rolled up there were 2 adults and a young crane foraging in this field. I was also able to locate 3 additional crane pairs in the surrounding marsh for a …
Every year, Cycle for Good raises money for local JCCs and gives a portion to a designated charity chosen by JCC Association, the leadership network for the JCCs of North America. For 2014, the designated charity is Etgarim: Israel’s Association for the Disabled. Each participating JCC will choose what portion of the money raised will go to Etgarim, with a minimum set at twenty percent.
On the first Sunday of Chanukah, join the JCCs of North America for a spin during the 3rd Annual Cycle for Good. Participants across North America will be riding at the same time, cycling to raise money for a good cause and their own …

Four hardy souls left Farmersville, TX on Saturday, December 13th to ride a rare jewel in these parts of North Texas, the North East Texas Trail. After downing a couple of pastries brought on her own accord, Susie Bolton a huge NETT supporter, we headed off on the 75 mile expected journey to Paris.
We’ve highlighted the North East Texas Trail or NETT in the past when 4 of us decided to take part in Spinistry’s first Ride the NETT event in November of 2013. Back then something about the trail ignited a passion within us for it’s beauty, wildness, and potential economic impact it can have on the communities it’s 230 miles travel through.
We set a hardy 12 mile an hour pace for the first 20 – 30 miles which are very passable, locally groomed by either the city or passionate supporters and do gooders who see the positive things the …

A bicyclist is riding 15,000 miles to help raise money for the children of St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital. On Saturday, he made a stop in the Permian Basin. He has spent his last few days bicycling through West Texas spreading the word about his cause to raise money for St. Jude’s and families of children with cancer who can’t afford the high cost of medical care.
Asking only for quarters and spare change, the journey Bernie Buffone refers to as Kittenrun2, is set to raise over 11 million quarters.
“That’s what we’re trying to do is raise the quarters to be sent into St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital. Anyone can pedal the bicycle, as long as this bicycle moves forward to collect the quarters for St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital and the children of St. Jude. It’s not about me, it’s about the bicycle and the …

Can you hear Santa’s busy elves at work….join us on a casual ride departing from Santa’s shop in Arlington. The route hopefully captures a different perspective of this side of town as it travels on roads not so familiar to the monthly COM and Jim’s famed Country Breeze, yet connecting with a few familiar ones. The routes of 62, 55, 42 and 35 will head southwest through Kennedale, some out to Burleson and Alvarado, then looping back just shy of Lillian. Not too challenging cause it is Sunday and it’s the holdiay season. Mean routes are for green ugly Grinches (and Saturdays.)
Store stops on routes. Cue sheets provided. Peek at the links below. Bring some holiday cheer and your spirited self. And to all a welcomed invitation…

I haven’t gotten in a lot of biking lately. Not only have I been caught up in the end of the semester crunch at the university, but my road bike has been acting up.
A week ago, I found myself unable to shift from the small chainring to the big one. I had to abandon a ride and get home, although that was the same ride where I discovered the broken spoke. I finally got the bike into the shop on Wednesday, where the mechanic listened to my shifting complaint and examined the bike. The chain is okay, since it’s fairly new. But he didn’t like the look of the big chainring.
“You’re missing the little pin that grabs the chain so it can move onto …
ROUND ROCK, Texas (KXAN) — Cyclists gathered Sunday for an emotional memorial ride honoring a husband and father who left for work on his bicycle one year ago and never made it back home.
Among the riders honoring Joseph Holan were his four children, and his widow Melissa. She rode with her late husband’s bicycle on the back of her own.
The ride, which was organized by Please Be Kind to Cyclists, ended at the ghost bike honoring Joseph. Last December, the organization placed it in …
