About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Houston has the recipe for portable water

By Dug Begley        blog.chron.com

One topic that, understandably, comes up in any discussion of bicycling as a way to get around the Houston area is the climate. For leisure, yeah, people are willing to work up a sweat — but to get to work every day?
For downtown workers, commuting by bike involves a risk of soaking your work clothes with sweat unless your office provides a place to change and maybe even shower. Then there’s the effect of 93-degree temperatures and 95-percent humidity on one’s interest in biking. It’s just not ..

Palo Duro Marathon Race Write Up

by Sharon McNutt        www.bigpigracing.org

Race write up for the Palo Duro Marathon race. This is my selfie after the race. This Tmbra marathon is 2015, technically my racing age is 50 next yr. This was one of the reasons I wanted to race a full marathon. Turning 50 is a big deal to me after aggressive cancer treatments. So here is my race report.
The morning started out cold, race start was 10:30am. Most of us was overdressed and I quickly realized I was too. At the last minute I took off some layers, and proceeded to the staging area. As usual the morning was glorious, the racers at the Palo duro marathon race are always my fav. Maybe because the canyon is just a beautiful place.
First lap and I wasn’t feeling it. I was struggling mentally. I had to much clutter in my head and I couldn’t get in the zone. I realized I wasn’t drinking enough and quickly adjusted that. By mile 12 I was in the zone, not letting anymore distractions in my …

Rolling My Wheels To Walmart In Search Of A Fort Worth Sidewalk

by Durango Texas

Last night after the sun set for the day I was giving my aching self a salubrious hot tub soak, when pinpricks of recently frozen water began pummeling me. It felt good.

A Grand Fondo In The Woodlands? Check it out!

by Maurizio Topini        woodlandscycling.org

The Woodlands Villager has a poll asking residents about whether the 2015 Gran Fondo should be held in The Woodlands. The early poll results have over 50% of the responders voting negatively on the event. The final poll results will be published in next Thursday’s newspaper. As you’re all aware this event would be a great event for cyclists in and around the woodlands; the organizers have also created a route which …

A Reordering of Bike Stuff

Bike Noob

The deep freeze that has spread across so much of the country has made its way down to Texas. We’ve had a few nights where the temperatures hovered around freezing, and we’re due for another tonight. Meanwhile, the dayside conditions have been miserable, too — with a persistent mist and a chilly dampness that you can feel right through to your bones.
So I was neither surprised nor upset when my pal Maggie texted me this morning to say she was not riding. That suited me. Although it meant that I would be off the bike for more than a week, I figured I …

The More Things Change

by Bill Cullins        Team San Angelo

The more things change, the more they stay the same.
Although I’m not going to ‘fess up about how young (or old) I am, I’ve been cycling and running for long enough to see some dramatic changes in the equipment used for these sports.
The thing that hasn’t changed, however, is that cyclists still have to push on their pedals and running still means quickly putting one foot in front of the other.
Like many other men my age, I learned to run (or to hate running) during basic training in the military.
The famous Nike waffle trainers didn’t appear on the scene until almost a decade after I completed my ‘government issue’ running lessons.
Running was also much lower-tech back then – no MapMyRun web sites, heart rate monitors, GPS watches or RunTracker apps on smart phones to post each workout on …

Cyclist to raise funds for Riders for Hope

thesouthern.com

Amputee cyclist Helgard Muller will fulfill his American dream of motivating and inspiring others by cycling 3,045 miles on a road bike (and his mountain bike for rough terrain) across the U.S.
Muller aims to raise $100,000 for people with disabilities. To his knowledge, he will be the first person with only one leg to do a Christmas Cycling Challenge. He will start in Los Angeles and set course for Ground Zero in New York City. He will be wearing his Riders For Hope golf-shirt and cap to raise awareness for persons with disabilities. …

… He will head from California to New York, travelling through Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Kansas, Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio and Pennsylvania. He believes the trip will take between six weeks …

Questions From a Houston Conservative

by L. Wayne Ashley        texasleftist.com

This was a real occurrence from the week, but it seemed worthy of being published.  Basically this person and I got into a rather heated discussion on Twitter, and he demanded that I answer this group of questions.  It’s quite apparent that he is something of a hard-line Conservative, but even still I gave the questions my best attempt.
The Twitter battle originated from the City of Houston’s decision to invest in cycling infrastructure through a variety of sources, so that is what these first few questions address.

How do you justify spending money towards bike trails before repairing our city streets, many of which are in horrible shape?
At no point have I ever suggested such a thing.  I simply stated that choosing between cycling and automobile transportation in a growing, changing city …

By Eric Nicholson        blogs.dallasobserver.com

On Thursday afternoon, a dozen or so journalists stood in an awkward semi-circle near the Women’s Museum at Fair Park, gazing at Dallas’ first bike-share station. Dallas park director Willis Winters, the only punctual city official, stood on the fringe checking his email and …
