We finally had a taste of fall here over the weekend. It only lasted a day and a half, but the hint of the new season got me taking stock of some recent developments around here.
I’ve really cut back on my riding. The start of the new school year does that to me every year, but this time around it’s tougher. You see, in addition to being an instructor, this semester I’m also a student. I’m enrolled in a class for faculty that teaches us how to prepare a class for delivery online.

Palestine, Texas – Palestine will host its first gravel grinder cycling event on Sat.,Oct. 4. The Camino205 is a long distance adventure ride through the Piney Woods of East Texas.
According to Dave Morrow, organizer for the Camino205, “Cyclists in the upper Midwest have been putting on gravel grinder events for about 10 years. One of the most notable being the Dirty Kanza, which traverses the Flint Hills National Grasslands in Kansas and has over 1,200 riders.”

Oryx cycling tour ‘elevates’ to become premier event at Fort Bliss, organizers say

FORT BLISS >> The Oryx Challenge Bike Tour keeps getting bigger and better, organizers and participants say.
On Sunday morning, 500 cyclists participated in the fourth annual Oryx, a noncompetitive bike ride that raises money for local USO programs. That’s about 100 more cyclists than last year, organizers said.
The bike ride started and ended at the Freedom Crossing shopping center on West Fort Bliss. In the past, the USO center on East Fort Bliss served as the tour’s headquarters.

I am utterly smitten with Big Bend National Park and it’s varied, stunning landscape. In early September I headed down to get in some quiet road cycling and exploring, since the busy season (and vehicle traffic) doesn’t pick up until the October through April months. This is an informal celebration of Patriot Day and the National Day of Service and Remembrance. Read through the city’s Lake Nasworthy Master Plan and you’ll notice that biking, hiking, running and walking are described as the most popular non-motorized recreational activities that take place in the areas surrounding the lake.
The park areas, open space and roads around Nasworthy provide an almost-perfect venue for outdoor fitness activities (we’ll get to the “almost” part later).

Biker’s June death ruled accidental drug overdose

The cause of death of a mountain biker whose body was found in Flower Mound in June has been ruled an accident, according to the Tarrant County medical examiner.
Wesley Hixson, 30, of Roanoke died of a drug overdose, the medical examiner said.
