About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

What A Difference A Week Makes

Texbiker.net Posted on August 30, 2014 by Rick AnkrumAugust 30, 2014

Today’s ride was 40.65 miles compared to last Saturday’s 74.4 miles at the Hotter’N Hell 100. The temperature here was a lot lower too ranging from 83 at the start (11:01) and 88 at the finish (2:16). Hello Fall?  I averaged 16.2 mph on the Stroker Road – Huffman route. Even with the late start I saw two other bikers, one on Stroker Road and the other on Old Atascocita Road east of FM2100.

The sky had lots of clouds with a big rain disturbance off to the east near Beaumont. According to the weather man at the Houston Chronicle the rain would stay south of I-10 so I didn’t plan on rain during the ride and that was the way it turned out. I was well north of I-10.

Before the ride I was reading a post by Ray Garza at RGVCycling.com about the iBike Newton. This caused me to start thinking about the power I output during biking and how my Garmin Edge 510 doesn’t record that without a very expensive sensor setup. The iBike is not low cost but it is a lot less than the power meter sensors that work with the 510. I am thinking do I want to spend that money on this? I am still trying to figure that out.

Even with the lower temperature perspiration was flowing heavily today when I stopped at the Huffman Chevron around the 29 mile point. I could tell as I was riding this was happening with the sweat dripping off my chin when I dipped it. I stopped at FM2100 and Stroker Road waiting for traffic and I created a big wet spot on the pavement. Later at the Chevron I sat on a Greensheet newspaper and it was wet when I got ready to leave. The paper towels I  used a the Chevron were totally wet too.

I am playing around with Google Earth too. I found out one of the programs I use, SportTracks, will show the route in Google Earth. This is what it shows:

8-30-2014 Google Earth Route

I was hoping to have a live on the web map but I haven’t seen how to do that yet. I can manipulate the ride in Google Earth on my computer though.

August miles now total 968.58, 3 miles below June’s total of 971. I plan on riding tomorrow to set  anew monthly high for the year. This week I rode 172.45 miles so far. I skipped yesterday to take of some things. Year to date moved to 5181 miles.

Richardson cycling group begins initiative to improve bike parking in the city

By HEATHER NOEL, Neighborsgo        www.dallasnews.com

Each morning, Richardson resident Mark Adams hops on his bike to make the trek to work — about a 4-mile trip.
As a developer for a software company, he said the 10-20 minute spurt of exercise provides a refreshing jumpstart to the day, before he sits at a desk for hours.
“Biking kind of provides that time for me to focus in and organize my day and be able to think about what’s going on without having to be frustrated because I’m sitting in traffic on [U.S. Highway] 75 for an hour,” Adams said.
The city of Richardson has made efforts in the last six or seven years to weave together a network of routes for bicyclists to travel around the city, with more than 40 miles of trails and…

AUSTIN — In May, hundreds in Northeast Austin celebrated the opening of a new pedestrian bridge that allows kids to safely walk to Bernice Hart Elementary.

From the Back of the Pace Line…Fake it ‘til you make it
Back in the fall of 2013 I was attempting to do something I’d never been good at…running. I didn’t like running and I physically couldn’t run further than the stop sign at the end of my street.  Bottom line, I was a horrible runner, but it was something that a lot of my friends were involved in.  All of those mud runs were popping up and it just seemed like I needed to jump on that wagon.  I tried running in the gym and even downloaded a couple of apps that were supposed to help you run a 5k in 9 weeks. I never made it past week 4 of the training, but I did become a decent elliptical runner at the gym.  I signed up for a couple of mud runs and completed an…

Why hitting a bicyclist can be no worse than a speeding ticket

By Field Sutton        www.cbs19.tv

TYLER (KYTX) – 42-year-old Kristin Blaise will be facing multiple surgeries for injuries all over her body. She was listed in “fair” condition at a Tyler hospital as of Wednesday afternoon.
The accident was attributed to 20-year-old driver Devin Hunter’s distraction courtesy of a cell phone.
Flashing lights at dusk on Old Jacksonville Highway Tuesday signaled that one cyclist was down and many more were down in spirit.
“We were about the third on the scene and as soon as we…

Six photos show how much a quick protected lane can add to a bigger project

Here are a few images from Austin bikeway engineer Nathan Wilkes that show how several thousand dollars of posts and paint can bring a new million-dollar bridge from good to great.
The bicycle and pedestrian bridge over Little Walnut Creek, visible in the top right background above, officially opened Monday after 17 years of planning and debate. It created a direct link between Hart Elementary School and the residential neighborhood to the north — but the link also required…

Rolling My Wheels In Fort Worth’s Gateway Park Anticipating A Sickening Email From Elsie Hotpepper

Walk, Roll, and Ride: Guide to Using Public Transportation

www.biketexas.org

Many students will return to biking and walking for transportation when they start college. One form of active transportation that may be new to students, though, is using the local public transportation system to get around. For students and non-students alike, using a city bus or train for the first time can be an intimidating hurdle. Our communications staffer Susan Wilcox, who rides both a bike and a bus for transportation, wrote a guide a few years ago for people who are new to riding buses. This article is an updated version of that guide. …

Temperature Lightens Up Some

Texbiker.net Posted on August 28, 2014 by Rick AnkrumAugust 28, 2014

Mid-afternoon rides this time of the year usually means the hottest time of  the day but not for today’s ride. I left home at 2:04 with the sky showing layers of clouds with blue showing through in places. The temperature was 88 degrees. With the later start I switched from the Atascocita – Walden – Huffman route to the slightly shorter Atascocita – Huffman one. I biked 30.02 miles averaging 15.3 mph. Riding to the south and east meant I was going into the wind (SE 12 mph) until I turned left onto FM2100 from Old Atascocita Road. I was able to make up some of the slower riding speed from that point to home. Even with the lower temperature my wrist bands were still soaked when I stopped in Huffman.

My usual rest stop at the Huffman Chevron dried me out with the wind flowing smoothly under the canopy. Not much went on while I was there. I did notice a man driving a Porsche Cayenne Turbo stop for gas. I don’t know how much this car cost but it was interesting seeing him pull out a rather old flip phone to talk on while filling up. Leaving the station I rode west with the help of a nice tailwind getting up to 21+ mph.

Later as I rode north on W. Lake Houston Parkway over the river I saw another biker riding the opposite direction on the trail to my right. He was decked out in a full kit but I could see it long enough to identify it.

My August mileage moved up to 927.94 miles positioning me to beat my previous monthly high if the rain cooperates. Friday, Saturday and Sunday weather shows 50% or higher chance of rain for some of each day. This week’s mileage is 131.8 and year to date I stand at 5140 miles.
