About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Warrior Ride founders visit George W. Bush for Texas ride for veterans

By Lee Hinnant, Staff Writer        stateportpilot.com

Warrior Ride founders Bob and Debra Racine of Oak Island are back from an unforgettable bicycling experience: the couple that works tirelessly to host injured veterans traveled to Prairie Chapel Ranch in Crawford, Texas, where they rode with former President George W. Bush.
The Racines joined the ex-president and 15 combat-injured veterans for W100, a 100-kilometer mountain biking event now in its fourth year. They bicycled with Bush and his staff for three days, and…

Lucky 11 Tips to Better Crit Racing

by Robert Wray with feedback from Heath Blackgrove        texasbikeracing.com

Want to bring your “A” game to your next crit? Many of the following tips are common sense, but you’d be surprised how many racers (experienced and rookies) don’t pay attention to the little details that make for a successful criterium—or burn lots of matches during the race that could be utilized at the end.
1. Arrive at the race early and pre-ride the course. Figure out the turns, wind direction, pot holes, gutters, cracks in the road, and best places to attack before the race starts. Most racers have a tendency to over-inflate their tires; try different pressures while training and at weeknight races. Harder isn’t always faster as it can increase rolling resistance. Lots of straights and sweeping turns = higher pressure. Technical with lots of turns = a little less. If the course is wet, ride a lower…

Bicycling West Texas

Brian and Sharon

We’ve cut back a little on our running as of lately. Mostly because we just need to do other things for our health besides running. Too much of anything can end up being not so good. The scenery here in our current location isn’t exactly our favorite. Especially this time of year when everyday seems to windy or hot, or both. We normally try to be in higher altitudes among the trees by this time of year. But, projects here will keep us stationary for another couple of months so we might as well make the best of it.
Biking has always been enjoyable for us. Even before we started traveling and living fulltime in our RV, we frequently rode our road bikes and mountain bikes both. We haven’t done much of either since we left the campground where we hosted in Washington state last summer. Some of the reason is, like I said, the scenery. The other…

El Deguello – Mountain Bike Race at City Park/Emma Long

Turnin’ Cranks

I decided to go back and try some different stabilization techniques and put telemetry data to my City Park race back in 2012.
Very technical trail with lots of limestone ledges and chunky sections abound. It is a super fun trail and is one of the most technically challenging in the area.
I included the full lap here, and it’s a short one at only 35 minutes or so.
I finished first in the race out of about 10 racers. You can see an edit put to music here: …

That Demoralizing Wind

Bike Noob

I really enjoyed my ride to the air show several days ago, except for the stiff headwind I found myself fighting on the way back. I hate wind even worse than I hate hills. Actually, I don’t hate hills — I just don’t do very well with them. But the wind is another story.
Part of my problem with the wind is my size. People in my bike club, even riders much faster than me, love to draft me on group rides, because I do such a great job of shielding them from the…

Full Moon Rides are held at San Angelo State Park and start at 8pm at Burkett Trailhead.  Depending on the group, we will go anywhere from 9 miles to 18 miles.

Wendell 100

San Angelo Bicycle Association

Saturday, May 3, 2014 twenty two riders took the Wendell 100 challenge – a 100k group ride in San Angelo. With advertising simply by word of mouth and a few Facebook posts, the Wendell 100 doubled in size again this year. The route was definitely the toughest so far and included several rolling hills and 2 category 4 climbs. As you can imagine with 42 tires and tubes rolling for 3-4 hours, we had a few flats along the way. If you just did the math, you may be wondering why there were only 42 tires and 22 riders… that’s right, we had a tandem join the fun.
Don’t worry if you missed it. The riders have…

A Suit Designed for Biking to Work and Taking Meetings

By Belinda Lanks        www.businessweek.com

Biking to work in most U.S. cities presents a long list of roadblocks topped, at least outside Portland, by the lack of designated bike lanes and the risk of injury because of missing infrastructure. Then there are the fashion hazards involved. What’s comfortable to wear for cycling—think spandex shorts—isn’t appropriate for the office.
“The biggest common complaint [cyclists] have is that they have to change their clothes once they get to work,” says Vaughn Brown, whose San Francisco-based company, Parker Dusseau, attempts to address that bugaboo with the Commuter Suit, combining the look of a well-tailored two-piece with the stretch of workout clothes. The inspiration, says Brown, was to make “clothing that allowed me to be…

La Quinta Inns proves that outreach to veterans is smart business

By TOM BENNING, Staff Writer        www.dallasnews.com

CRAWFORD — As 16 wounded veterans wheeled to the finish Friday at the George W. Bush Institute’s Warrior 100K mountain bike ride, one of those cheering in the crowd was Derek Blake.
Blake, a vice president at Irving-based La Quinta Inns & Suites, has become a fixture at the institute’s military service events.
That’s because the annual bike ride and, in the fall, the Warrior Open golf tournament — celebrations of perseverance that honor post-9/11 veterans — are starting to produce change well…
