About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Honeysuckle and Mowed Grass

Texbiker.net Posted on March 1, 2014 by Rick AnkrumMarch 1, 2014

Yellow honeysuckle blooms littered the bike path as I made my out of Kingwood. Is this a sign of spring? Later I saw about a dozen people mowing their yards. The smell of grass filled the air and I breathed deeply. Today was the first ride of March and the weather axiom of in like a lion and out like a lamb seemed to point to the lamb side. It was 71 and overcast when I left on the ride at 10:34 and by the time I returned home at 1:38 the sky was partly cloudy and 81 degrees. I am loving the warm temperature. Sadly this probably will last another day and then back to cold on Monday. I plan on biking tomorrow (Sunday).

Riding to the north through New Caney and on Gene Campbell Road before making the turn back home on FM1314 put me in and out of what felt like a stiff wind. Riding west on Gene Campbell Road two large dump trucks went past me in the opposite direction sucking a lot of wind with them. I had to step up my effort to recover speed. Later going east on FM1314 I thought I was going with the wind but when a number of cars or trucks passed me on the left the wind came behind them and pushed against me. When the road bent to the left some at Sorters Road the wind was not such an issue.

I biked 36.86 miles at a 15.1 mph average speed. For the week I biked 68.32 miles so far. Since this is the first day of March the day’s miles repeat. Year to miles are 742. My goal for March is the average of the last three years = 505 miles. With the iffy weather next week this could be difficult.

Grampies Go South

By Steve Miller and Dodie Miller

Day 55: Barton Creek to Johnson City: The hills are alive (and trying to kill us)
Friday February 28, 2014, 59 km (37 miles) – Total so far: 3,171 km (1,970 miles)
The night was a bit cold at our wild camp, but as long as you kept your hoodie on, it was ok. Of course we were tired enough not to mind traffic noise, but we did subconsciously note that it continued all through the night.Old Bee Caves Rd. must just be too close to suburban development, and so has high traffic volumes. In the morning we could see this again as we took to the road. Old Bee Caves Road and the other short roads that make up the route in the area west of Austin, have no shoulder, and too much traffic to be safe. As we wrote before, what happens when traffic volume is high is that the driver who comes up behind the cyclist has the choice of slowing down and squeezing past, or not slowing down and zooming past. If the oncoming lane is free, there is room to do these. But if the lane is occupied or if a car is coming and soon will…

Is It Okay If I Whine a Little?

Texbiker.net Posted on February 28, 2014 by Rick AnkrumFebruary 28, 2014

It’s a good thing I rode the miles on Monday to reach my February goal of 370 miles. Since then the weather has not been biking friendly to me. As I write this the sky is overcast with a light rain that ended about an hour ago. The forecast 70 degrees is not happening being 62 now.

I planned on riding today wearing my new Texbiker.net jersey to add a few miles to February’s total. Instead I am inside looking at the wet street. Maybe the forecast will be real tomorrow.

Last year I rode the Gator Ride in Baytown on the 1st Saturday. This year I will not ride there. The reason is the $50 registration cost. I have noticed a few rides have increased their registration to $50 and I think this is too rich for many people. The next ride in my area is the Raven’s Revenge in Huntsville on March 8th Weather permitting I plan on riding there.

Thankfully spring arrives in March and warmer weather with it, I hope.
