About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

With 4 Days to Spare

Texbiker.net Posted on February 24, 2014 by Rick AnkrumDecember 9, 2016

Generally I do not ride the same way two days in a row but today was an exception when I rode to Huffman again. The route was not the same as yesterday but I went through Atascocita and Walden on the way to Huffman. The goal was to ride enough to reach the 370 mile goal for February. I needed 26 miles and I biked 31.46 miles. This put February miles at 375.69. The weather the rest of the week looks sketchy with rain the next 2 days and then some rain. I was tempted to ride a shorter route and make up the difference another day. The weather did not encourage me today with an overcast sky and 66 degrees. I remembered in the past when I put off riding thinking I could catch up later and then did not make it. With this in mind I decided to go for the longer ride.

Riding on Firesign Drive I passed two ladies walking their Doberman Pinchers to keep up the string of days sighting dog walkers. On the return route I met a man riding an over sized mountain bike at the Kings River and W. Lake Houston Parkway. He was riding on the trail and I was on the street. I have seen him before and I wonder if he is a commuter because of his backpack.

When I was trying to think of a way to ride north enough miles but not too many I could not come up with a satisfactory route. Going to Huffman seems to offer more variations.

I divide my biking into three categories: fitness, scenic, and fitness/scenic. Today was not scenic and fitness was the reason for riding. I am looking forward to warmer weather and some sunshine.

To speed up my return leg I passed the Huffman Chevron without stopping. I can’t remember the last time I did that.

Jalapeño 100

By KAYLEIGH SOMMER Valley Morning Star

Cyclists conquer 100-mile challenge

HARLINGEN — About the only time Harlingen sees more than 600 bicycle riders starting from the same place is when residents witness the Jalapeño 100.
Bright and early at 7:30 a.m. Saturday, cyclists young and old took off with fervor from the Oil Mill Pavilion off of Fair Park Boulevard. Jalapeño Jack, the Jalapeño 100 mascot, entertained and encouraged the cyclists as they prepped to launch their rides.
First out of the gate were the…

HBC Chappell Hill North Ride

Houston Bicycle Club

Saturday 05/03/14     8:00am
Distances: 35(B), 46(C), 55(C) miles
One of the prettier rides for wildflowers in the spring, it’s also a very nice fall ride. The short route heads north on FM 1155 for about 7.5 miles to the stop sign at FM 2193 then heads east on FM 1155 another 12 miles to Washington on the Brazos State Park.  There are bathroom facilities and water/soft drinks available at the park. Watch that one big hill just a few miles north of Chappell Hill on FM 1155. It’s not…

Grampies Go South

By Steve Miller and Dodie Miller

Day 50: Novasota to Mound Hill
Sunday February 23, 2014, 51 km (32 miles) – Total so far: 2,904 km (1,804 miles)
The day started out already reasonably warm, meaning that we could begin in shorts and with just a light windbreaker. It was strangely misty, though, and we worried about the effect of that on the camera. We crossed the Brazos River after only a short time. The Brazos is referenced in that song by Doug McArthur, whose lyrics we included here a couple of days ago. …

An Old Car and a Dog Walking Couple

Texbiker.net Posted on February 23, 2014 by Rick AnkrumDecember 9, 2016

I biked to Huffman today after taking yesterday off to go to the Reliant Arena for the Top Hands Show. While I was riding today I passed two other bicyclists on their mountain bikes. They were stopped on the wooden bridge along Kingwood Drive throwing some pebbles in the water. I would classify them as serious bicyclists because they wore helmets and bike clothes. Not too long after that while I rode through Atascocita a low flying jumbo jet passed overhead at what I consider a low altitude and going in a different direction from what would be expected. The IAH runways generally run east-west and this plane was flying to the northwest at a slow lumbering speed. The clouds obscured the markings and the plane slowly turned to the runway direction. This brought to mind the recent episodes of planes landing at the wrong airport. I don’t think that was a problem in this case since no other airport is close to IAH and is as big.

The ride was delayed because of morning showers and I left home at 1:01 with a cloudy sky and 71 degrees. The weather must have been favorable for couples walking a dog as I saw three of them. I also saw another biker as I returned home. One unusual sighting was this old car in Atascocita. When I stopped to take the pictures one of the dog walking couples caught up with me and we talked about the old car and their Saturday rides with a group leaving the Bike Barn shop in Atascocita. They cautioned me about the expansion joints in the streets as the woman had got a tire stuck in one and fallen over. I am not sure of the make on this old car but one of the license plates said 1931 and another one said 2014 Alaska. Which should I believe? In the second picture you can see the couple walking their dog approaching me.

2-23-2014 Old Car A 2-23-2014 Old Car B

The wardrobe for today’s ride was probably a little overkill. I wore a long sleeve jersey and windbreaker along with shorts. When I got to the Huffman Chevron the sleeves of the jacket were wet from perspiration and the bandana was wets as well. This screen shot from my phone is while I was at the Chevron station.

2-23-2014 Huffman Weather

I was dressed for the 71 degrees at the time I started. By the time I got home the jacket was thoroughly wet and the bandana could be wrung out.

Biking to Huffman and back home totaled 32.73 miles at a 15.0 mph average speed. February is getting closer to the 370 mile goal: 344.23 miles. I need 26 more miles. This week I rode 157.6 miles. Year to date riding totals 673 miles.

REDLANDS: Cyclist to tackle 485-mile course

BY ERIN WALDNER, STAFF WRITER        www.pe.com

Roger Coggins isn’t one to shy away from a challenge.

He has entered the Ride 2 Recovery Texas Challenge, an up to 485-mile bicycle ride that starts March 22 in Houston and ends March 29 in Fort Worth.
He learned about the ride from participating in the Ride 2 Recovery California Challenge. Other riders “talked abut how great it is. So I thought, ‘I have to check this out,’” he said.
The first day of the Texas Challenge covers 85 miles, followed by 98 miles the next day, which happens to be Coggins’ 54th birthday. He said cyclists can ride 100 miles each of the first two days. He is thinking of doing it, partly for the…
