About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Below the Triple Digit Point

Texbiker.net Posted on February 19, 2014 by Rick AnkrumFebruary 19, 2014

Rolling out the driveway at 1:06 I headed to Huffman on my usual route. This time I wanted to vary the route a little by going north on FM2100 from FM1960 where I stop at the Chevron station. The object was to ride at least 30 miles in my continuing quest for 370 miles this month. I biked 30.81 miles and averaged 15.2 mph. Including today’s miles I now am with 88 miles of that goal. So far this week I biked 95.57 miles and 611 miles year to date.

At the start of the ride the sky was overcast but as I rode east on the FM1960 causeway over Lake Houston I could see the sun shining. By the time I reached that spot the clouds had moved to block the sun. It stayed that way until I was taking a break at the Huffman Chevron. The sun shoved those clouds out of the way and from there to the end of the ride I was in and out of the sun. This is a screen shot from my phone while I was at the Chevron station.

Weather at the Huffman Chevron during bike ride

Weather at the Huffman Chevron during bike ride

When I got home my weather station showed 76. This string of 70 degree days may have one more left before a cool front moves through Thursday night or Friday morning. Tomorrow there is a 30% chance of precipitation (this has changed from 80% then 50%) so I should get to ride.

While I was biking to the north yesterday the sweeper cleared the gravel from both directions on the causeway over Lake Houston. They even cleaned up the pile on the west side in the west bound shoulder. No more gravel grinding.

This morning I watched live the Prologue of the 2014 Vuelta a Andalucia Ruta Ciclista del Sol. This is in southern Spain and the weather looked great. My Chromebook was streaming the video from EuroSport. Tomorrow I may use my Chromecast to watch on the big screen TV.

Happy Noobaversary To Me!

bikenoob.com

This one caught me by surprise. It’s the sixth anniversary of Bike Noob. I hadn’t even thought about the fact that I’ve been writing this blog for six years, until the folks at WordPress sent me a congratulatory message.
How’s the past year been? A mixed bag, I think. I’ve noticed that my posts have not kept to the rigid three-a-week schedule I used to observe, and that I’ve been posting a little less often recently. I think that has to do with a colder-than-usual winter this year, and a marked reduction in miles ridden as a result. It’s hard to keep interested when you find yourself preferring to stay indoors. Now that the weather is…

New Member: Russ Miller

www.neilsondevo.com

We’re glad to welcome Russ Miller to the Neilson Devo team. Russ started riding late last year, and has made great strides already in both fitness and shred! We took him out for his first team ride this weekend to Cypresswood, where he knocked out 15 miles without blinking an eye. Russ has been doing a lot of cardio rides to get in better shape and lose weight, so his fitness has come along nicely but his skills were still a little shaky. He lacked confidence in the corners and needed to learn the fundamentals of handling. After an hour or so of riding and coaching…

The urge to merge

An Old Guy On Two Wheels

Yesterday my inbox filled briefly with breathless announcements about the pending merger between Austin Cycling Association and Bike Austin (formerly League of Bicycling Voters). I expected some discussions on social media but I get the impression of cricket sounds.
Do people care that this is happening?  Or was it so expected as to be a blinding flash of the obvious?  More important stuff to discuss?  Or have I just not allowed enough time for the discussions to develop?
And this deafening silence makes me wonder about the future of the alliance.  I support the concept.  If Austin is to become a world class bicycle city, it will need an…

Lots of Dirt Moving Out There

Texbiker.net Posted on February 18, 2014 by Rick AnkrumFebruary 18, 2014

After riding to the south yesterday I headed to the north today going through New Caney to turn back when I reached Roman Forest Blvd. Nearing Roman Forest Blvd. I crossed the railroad tracks to a street that follows the railroad tracks to Roman Forest Blvd. To my surprise a barrier was across the road. I have biked on this road since 1979 and now it looks like it will disappear as Friendswood Development builds the new community along US59.

Barrier across the road at Roman Forest.

Turning back across the railroad tracks I moved to the US59 service road to get to Roman Forest Blvd. I wanted to see how the construction work was progressing there. I thought I could ride east on Roman Forest Blvd but was greeted by this scene:

Looking east at Roman Forest Blvd and US59

The picture cuts off the left lane where the inbound and outbound traffic goes while the construction proceeds. I had seen this construction several months ago and thought it would be done. I wanted to take a picture of the entrance but decided not to ride down the two way road with several cars moving around. Also the workers were creating some dust clouds.

Up to this point the wind was not an issue (from the S 13 mph, 21 mph gusts when I left home at 12:55). The temperature was a pleasant 79 degrees according to the Weather Underground app on my phone:

Weather at Roman Forest entrance at US59

That changed when I turned south under US59 for the ride to Valley Ranch. My speed almost immediately dropped to 11 or 12 mph and the pedaling effort increased to keep it there. It felt like I was crawling along the service road on my way to Valley Ranch. There was a short stretch south of FM1485 when the wind let up. I think the line of trees back from the road provide the relief. With that ending I thought it would be good to take a couple of pictures of the Grand Parkway fly-over construction at Community Drive and US59.

Riding around the construction concrete work was rampant. To the west some big equipment worked on the roadway leading to the fly-over.

Biking through Valley Ranch all I could smell was skunk. I don’t know if a herd of them moved through and wanted to leave a calling card or what. Later on Northpark Drive I saw one dead in the gutter. Maybe this was one of them?

Reaching the Stripes store at FM1314 it was time for a break from the wind. The weather warmed up a couple of degrees from Roman Forest:

Weather at the Stripes store on FM1314

After eating a snack and downing a Diet Pepsi I got back on the bike to ride through Briar Tree and then Oakhurst. This time I missed the school bus parade into but not out of Briar Tree. Taking the back streets I rode to Kings Manor where it was not quite time for the school to let out. The parents were starting to line up though.

From there I was about 4 1/2 miles from home. The rest of the ride wove through residential streets. Overall the ride was 32.62 miles at a 14.7 mph average speed thanks to the wind.

February miles are adding up: 251.40. This means only 119 to the 370 mile goal. Year to date: 580 miles.
