About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

City tries to make San Antonio a safer place for cyclists
By Vianna Davila        www.expressnews.com

SAN ANTONIO — A little more than 10 years ago, San Antonio was not a particularly friendly place for anyone traveling on two wheels. It had only 36 miles of bike infrastructure, placing it in the bottom third of the 50 largest U.S. cities.
But much has changed since then. There now are more than 400 miles of infrastructure citywide, which includes bike lanes, bike routes and improved shoulders.
Of those, 40 miles were added in the past two years, since San Antonio adopted a bicycle master plan.
That number excludes the city’s 45-mile greenway trail system, a network that…

Critical Mass is free, but Houston police may begin charging riders for escort
by Heather Alexander, Houston Chronicle

Houston police are considering a plan to charge the Critical Mass bicycle group as safety concerns draw officers away from their regular duties.

The event, which sees thousands of riders take to the streets on the last Friday of every month, has operated in cities across the world for over 20 years. At times it has become a real Drivers vs. Cyclists war, with violence erupting at rides in both Seattle and San Francisco.

Just this past Friday, a disgruntled driver shot video that shows riders racing through the…

Amongst the Leaves and Trees

Texbiker.net Posted on January 1, 2014 by Rick AnkrumDecember 9, 2016

Great start to the new year. My wife requested me to ride the trails in Kingwood to stay off the streets in case some late party people are on the road. I rode 17.68 miles on my Motobecane 700HT MTB. This is the first time on the MTB in a long time. I had to dust off the bike and air up the tires before riding. I meet a number of people on the trails. For awhile I thought it was required that you walk your dog to be on the trails but eventually I came across some joggers and people walking. Several strollers were out as well. The trees have dumped a pile of leaves on the trails so at times I had to guess where the trail went. Since I rode these trails before I had a good idea.

I hope to bike 6500 miles this year so I only have 6483 more to go.

The weather today was overcast with 63 degrees and a light 5 mph breeze. To make this comfortable I wore two long sleeve jerseys, leg warmers, shorts, windbreaker jacket and full finger gloves. This was probably more than I needed but I like to be warm. Bring on the 85+ degree days.

Click the slide to stop the show.

Our last race of the year is the age-based Texas State Championships hosted by Bat City Cycling in Austin. Unlike years past, this race (known as the Cyclocross Scuffle) will not take place and the beloved Moya Park.

We asked James Sides, race promoter, to give us the full scoop. James – what happened to that great track you guys normally run?

The great Halloween flood has washed out the Moya venue. No bathroom facilities but a few tons of natural barriers.

I’m glad you were able to recover quick and double up at…

TXMTB in 2013
Texas Mountain Bike Trails
Looking back on 2013 it’s pretty amazing what all has happened. The growth from a year ago to today has been absolutely amazing. So today we’re taking a look back at what all has happened over the past 365 days since January 1st of 2013.

First off, the Erwin Park Summer Series.

This is by far the highlight of the year for me and I know that a lot of other people really enjoyed them as well. We had 14 races at Erwin Park in 2013 with anywhere from 30 to 60 racers per week. To really make that number stand out, that is somewhere around 3,000 miles that were raced over the series.

To everyone who came out and raced, Thank you so much it was the highlight of my week and every week since they end has felt a little bit empty. But the best part is the relationships that I formed with a lot of…
