About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Woman driving to work fatally strikes cyclist on dark Dickinson road
By Dale Lezon        www.chron.com
A bicyclist died early Monday morning when a car hit him as he was riding along a darkened road in Dickinson, officials said.
The incident happened about 5 a.m. on eastbound FM 517 near FM 646, according to Sgt. Michael Anzualda of the Dickinson Police Department.
Anzualda said the man was riding a bicycle eastbound on FM 517 when a woman driving a car traveling eastbound on the roadway hit him. The woman, who was on her way to work, stopped. The man…

Get going on January 1 with North Texas’ ‘Happy New Rear’ bike ride
By Leslie Barker        healthblog.dallasnews.com

How can I resist telling you about something that comes from a man whose email signature line is this: “Come ride. Come play. Do some good along the way”?

That man is Mike Keel, who wrote to invite me to a New Year’s Day bike ride he and his wife have hosted since 1990. I’m kind of a bike-riding wimp, although I quite admire people who have a passion for this.

He said it was A-OK for me to open the event up to anyone, though, so consider this your official invitation. The routes are 15, 28, and 40 miles long; each costs $25 and includes black-eyed peas and cornbread afterwards.

The event, known as the Merry Fitness/Happy New Rear Ride (and…

Brownsville groups offer running, cycling options
By YVETTE VELA The Brownsville Herald

Coming into 2014, Browns ville residents have options to make healthy resolutions for the new year: no-cost running or cycling groups.
Saturday morning brought cold and drizzly weather, but that didn’t stop a group of dedicated runners who gathered before sunrise for a weekly run at Rx Running Co., at 3101 Pablo Kisel Blvd.
The Brownsville store, which specializes in running shoes, hosts Saturday morning runs for anyone wanting to get out and improve their running times and distances — or for those who enjoy running as a…

Trail Grooming – December 28, 2013
friends of colorado bend

This was originally going to be a full weekend trip, but the weekend between Christmas and New Year apparently isn’t a great time to schedule a trail building weekend!  The only other option available was the weekend BEFORE Christmas and we figured that would be an even worse time!  Two couples signed up for the trip, but one couple could only make it for the day, so the weekend became a ‘Day Trip’ for both couples and a late notice was sent out to the trail builders about the change.  With no food or lodging involved, there was no deadline for signing up and all were invited to just ‘show up’ if they wanted to.  Two guys took the offer, so there were…

How To : Ride Your Bicycle in Cold Weather
www.bikegurus.com

Bank robber? No, just layered up and ready for a ride in the mid-30′s!

Without the proper apparel, bicycling in cold weather can redefine what it means to be cold and uncomfortable.  Wind chill is a big factor in this equation of discomfort.  So what is a cyclist to do when the mercury starts to dip?

The answer – breathable layers and a windproof outer shell.

Here’s a quick peek at what I wear when the temperatures dip down between 32-49 degrees.

Your first layer should usually be form-fitting (so it plays nicer with subsequent layers you put on) and made of a breathable fabric so moisture gets pulled away from your body as you…

Runaway Trailer and Google Glass

Texbiker.net Posted on December 29, 2013 by Rick AnkrumDecember 9, 2016

I will get to the title stuff in a minute. Today 6 other bicyclists thought it was a good day to ride based on the people I saw. In the first 2 miles I spotted two bicyclists on Tree Lane in Kingwood. This would be all until I was stopped at the Huffman Chevron when Manuel Hernandez pulled into the Chevron station. After leaving Huffman heading back home 3 more bicyclists popped up on Atascocita Shores Drive. I was glad I chose the Atascocita – Walden – Huffman route today.

Leaving home at 1:36 I rode under a clear sky and 67 degrees. This is the first ride since December 19th due to cool weather and Christmas. I was inspired today by both the nice weather (for December anyway) and the Superprestige Cyclocross Diegem cyclocross race I watched after church this morning. The race was a little unusual because they raced under the lights in mud and cold. All of the racers wore shorts, arm warmers and jerseys. They must have more cold endurance than me.

The route today came in at 31.78 miles bringing December miles to 275.44 and year to date to 6261 miles. With the weather change I don’t think I will get to ride any more this year but New Year’s day might warm up enough to go biking.

Back to the lead. The rider who stopped at the Huffman Chevron was Manuel Hernandez and we visited for a few minutes. He noticed I ride a Motobecane and he told me about the Motobecane Nemesis he rode in the past. The bike he was on today was a Lightspeed and I told him that I use to rode one until I crashed (in 2005 a SUV side swiped me breaking the frame). He then told me about the Scott bike he had before the Lightspeed. I am not sure when but one day he was riding on FM1960 going west and turned onto Atascocita Shores Drive. At the first stop sign a Jeep stopped on his left. The Jeep had a trailer attached. Manuel pulled away from the stop sign with the Jeep. Not too long after that he heard some noise and looked back to see the trailer come loose from the Jeep with the safety chain holding the trailer but not too long after that the chain broke and the trailer started coming into the lane Manuel was in. He was too close to the curb to ride up over it so he jumped off his bike into the grass leaving the Scott bike in the street. The trailer went right over the bike before crashing into a mailbox. It was a total loss.

While Manuel was talking I noticed he was wearing a pair Google Glass. This is the first time I have seen these in person. Manuel is an IT person so I guess this a natural for him. I told him I am playing around with a Raspberry Pi.

By the time I finished the ride at 4:12 the blue sky turned overcast and the temperature went down to 64.

While I was biking I noticed the left brake lever has slipped down the handlebar and the bar tape is loose . Looks like I need to take the bar tape off and reposition the lever.
