About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Upgrades to area school zones, safer routes for children
Denise Olivas        www.kvia.com
EL PASO, Texas – Walking and bicycling to school is easily one of the best forms of exercise for children everywhere, especially if it’s a safe one.

The City of El Paso has started a campaign to make upgrades to school zones in the city as part of the Safe Routes to School program.

The federally-funded program will add more signs and lights to school zones to more than 30 schools.

Spokesman for the city’s Engineering and Construction Department Martin Bartlett said officials considered schools city-wide that…

STCC 2014 Fresh Start Ride
Shawnee Trail Cycling Club

Its a new year and lets all kick it off with the STCC Fresh Start Ride.  Once we reached a critical mass in our membership, we found that it made sense to organize a ride on New Year’s morning – to start everyone rolling with their fitness goals and to give you a chance to ride with old friends and possibly make some new.  We wanted the distance to be challenging, but not overwhelming – get those legs spinning.  We think you’ll enjoy the ride and it has to be warmer than last years (please)!

We’re planning three pace groups and distances.  This is all about fun and participation, so if there are enough that want an additional distance at a slower pace – let us know [click here].  The routes are being…

Cycling: A one-man band or a lifestyle
By STEVE NASH        www.brownwoodtx.com

Cycling, Vonne Cornett explained, can be as simple or as complicated as you want it to be. For some, it can be a recreational ride around the neighborhood.

For others, “it’s a dad-gummed lifestyle!” Cornett said happily as she and her husband, Lynn, talked about their business, The Bike Peddler, at 1017 Austin Ave.

Vonne Cornett is the sole owner, but she is, for all practical purposes, partners with her husband. Lynn Cornette retired in 2005 from the Brownwood Fire Department and spends his days at…

Reflection: On Smiles & Empowerment
By Waco Moore        cyclingsavvy.org

Every morning, rain or shine, a thousand cars swarm my daughter’s school. They fill the streets as far as the eye can see and snake through the parking lot in a man-made maze, a queue of idling steel and glass. Police direct traffic. Teachers and administrators are there by the dozens to open car doors and usher the little ones into school. In the early afternoon, the scene repeats itself. Hundreds of children crowd the benches that line the driveways, each child waiting for a glimpse of the “right car” in the long lines of idling vehicles that wind through…

Race Preview – Resolution CX – Dec. 28-29, 2013
by joeyTWOwheels        texascx.com

And then there were four – four lonely cross races left on the #TXCX schedule. Please, don’t anybody say “crit” or “mountain bike season” at the next race – we may lose it.

For your post-Christmas/Hanukkah/Kwanza/Festivus pleasure we have the Resolution Cross Cup, the race formerly known as The Most Awesome Cross Race Ever. Jeff Lucido of the Texas Cyclocross Syndicate gives us the low down.

Tell us about the course – last year there was a significant hill and some single track.

What else are you going to do after opening all those gifts and eating copious amounts of treats?

Yes, the venue is centered around the the amphitheater section of the park so you can imagine that means elevation change. We don’t want to kill you with trips up and down the slope (which is all grass) so we will be using it strategically. The fun downhill singletrack section which the racers raved about last year will be returning but…

Cyclists say current Plano bike plan is a start, but improvements needed
By JULISSA TREVIÑO        www.dallasnews.com

Along with a network of trails, Plano’s bike system includes a number of on-street routes that help commuters and recreational cyclists get around town.
In 2011, the city placed signs throughout the city noting bike routes, and some commuters say that’s helped the city become a relatively easy place to ride a bicycle.
“It’s been good for a long time, but it’s gotten a lot better,” said Plano resident Warren Casteel, vice president of…
