About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

North Texas Mayors Hatch Plan to Build Dallas-to-Fort Worth Bike Trail
By Eric Nicholson        blogs.dallasobserver.com

Five North Texas mayors walk into a room. After some glad-handing and small talk, Arlington Mayor Robert Cluck launches into a soliloquy.

“In the city of Arlington, we are constantly looking for new ways to encourage the community to sustain an active lifestyle,” he begins. Residents should be made aware of the “benefits of getting your heart rate up and increasing blood circulation throughout the body …”

Here, Cluck is interrupted by Dallas’ Mike Rawlings and..

Seeing the community rally together tonight was an incredible experience. Watching the masses of bikes and cars moving together, peacefully, gives me hope that Houston’s streets can be safer. Will be safer.
I took a small collection of photos to help us all remember the strength we have, and the work we have left to do. Please use them to spread the word.
Rest peacefully, Chelsea.

Two Leading Austin Bicycling Groups On Track To Merge
Austin Cycling Association
Austin Cycling Association and Bike Austin start discussions to form unified organization, propel the city’s ambitious bicycling vision forward
AUSTIN – Two of the city’s non-profit bicycling organizations, Austin Cycling Association (ACA) and Bike Austin, have started discussions aimed at forming a single organization dedicated to promoting cycling for transportation and recreation in Austin. A task force of members from each organization’s board of directors and staff met on Dec. 8 to agree on a process and timeline. They have hired the Washington, DC-based consulting firm S & G Endeavors to guide them through the merger and…

Bag to the Future
How CamelBak changed the way we all ride
By: Vernon Felton

You know you’re in for some suffering when the ride you sign up for is called the “Hotter ‘N Hell 100”. This is especially true if you are doing said ride in Wichita Falls, Texas during the month of August. In fact, in August of 1988, when a young road rider named Michael Eidson lined up for the Texas century, the mercury was consistently pushing past a hundred degrees Fahrenheit in Wichita Falls, which made Eidson ponder the following question: How the hell am I going to possibly get enough water?

The answer to that question changed the world of outdoor sports. This was because Eidson, who was an Emergency Medical Technician (or “EMT”) by trade, answered his dilemma by snagging an IV bag from one of the…

Thoughts on Timmy Duggan and Quiting
Blog of Ken Day and Bicycle Racing            Texas Racing Life
Thoughts on Timmy Duggan and Quiting
If cycling fans haven’t heard, Timmy Duggan decided to retire from professional cycling. I’m sure it was a very hard decision for him. Here is a great interview from Velonews.com on what lead to the decision.

I loved how he talked about using cycling to learn how to set goals and achieve things. Cycling is great in this way. It has definitely taught me the lesson that anything worth having in this life will be hard to attain, and you will have to work extremely hard to achieve. This carries through to my home and work life.

What really struck me was how he talks about cycling being a part of you, but making sure that you have other parts of your life that are important. I believe this also means having something to fall back on. In Timmy’s case, this is skiing and his family business in real estate.

I started cycling at 21, and never thought about cycling as a career. I know a lot of younger guys that are…

Rudolph’s Revenge Postponed until January 26th.
Texas Mountain Bike Trails
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_wHRduwsrBY&feature=player_embedded
Due to the ice storm that came busting up all our plans last week Rudolph’s Revenge will be delayed until January 26th.

With the full inch of ice that we still had covering the entire trail yesterday the race just wasn’t going to happen this Saturday. But, I’m very happy to report that we have been allowed to re-schedule the race for Sunday January 26th, 2014.

I’m super pumped about all the good vibes out there for the race. It certainly seems like there are a lot of people very…

Inmates at Richmond’s Vance Unit giving back by restoring bikes for children
by Larry Seward / KHOU 11 News

RICHMOND, Texas – A group of inmates at the Carol S. Vance Unit are on the road to redemption, by doing something for special children this holiday season.
They are restoring bicycles for kids who otherwise wouldn’t be able to get one for Christmas.
The inmates are fixing everything from brakes to rusty chains – making sure all 900 bicycles work just right.
“Pretty soon they’re gonna be having wings I think…,” Jimmy St. John, an inmate, said.
It’s like Santa’s workshop in prison.
“I took away from my community for so long… doing things that I did. And…

Race Preview – Tough CX – Dec. 14-15, 2013
joeyTWOwheels        texascx.com
Tough CX is an apropos name, because dang is it tough. This course became an instant #TXCX classic when it appeared two years ago and we’ve enjoyed (suffered through) a season opener and states there just last year.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_juqwIijoMI&feature=player_embedded
Bryan Fawley, course logistics coordinator for the Texas Cross Syndicate, explains it like this:

Make your way to the most authentic place for CX in Texas, the German hamlet of Fredericksburg.

The course is a classic because it has something for everyone – a long stretch of uphill pavement, fast tree lined sections, sand, big run up, and great view for the spectators. You can see entire course from…

December 14th & 15th Rides
Steiner Ranch Cycling Club

RECAP LAST WEEKEND
Saturday ride was cancelled due to wet roads, rain and frigid temperatures.

Sunday no one showed up except Dustin and I and we ended up running because it was below freezing.

The forecast looks like it will be Sunny with lows in the mid 30’s and highs in the 50’s.  I would expect it will be in the high 30’s when we start and low 40’s when we finish the ride.  So dress accordingly.  Wear layers, ear protection, gloves, long legs and shoe covers.  It will be cold but there really is no other reason why…

Good things….bad things
Borderland Mountain Bike Association
For those of you who have been wondering what the mountain bike club is up to, let me fill you in.

First the GOOD:

The BMBA is in the process of becoming an IMBA Chapter.  What does that mean?  First, it means that club officers don’t need to continue to fumble with memberships, renewals, and donations.  All membership management will be performed by IMBA.  Anyone  in our area who joins IMBA via the IMBA website will automatically become a BMBA member.  We will all pay a bit more to become members, but we are now members of both.  The club receives the same amount as we would have when we charged $10 for a membership.  All donations made to the BMBA will first go to IMBA as a non-profit 501c3 donation and will be redistributed to our account at no financial loss to the club.  We are now part of a larger group who has worked tirelessly for many years to improve mountain biking around the world.  Some may not agree with everything IMBA does, but you can’t find a larger…

Death of cyclist galvanizes biking community

They call it the “ghost bike.” It is painted completely white, even the tires, and chained to a street post in Montrose.
