About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Houston’s deadly streets
Houston’s roads may be bicycle-friendly, but they’re not always bicycle-safe.
www.chron.com
Before the ambulance arrived at Waugh and West Gray on Sunday night, Chelsea Norman, 24, was found lying face up in the narrow bicycle lane, her bike in the middle of the road. She died at Memorial Hermann Hospital on Wednesday, suffering from broken bones and head trauma. The driver who killed Chelsea has yet to be found, and Houston counts another victim of a hit-and-run. A memorial bike ride is being held on Wednesday, starting at 7 p.m. outside the Whole Foods on Waugh where Chelsea worked.
The deadly reality of unsafe streets once again tarnishes a year of bicycle achievements. It is a sad story, one that we hear all too often. But this single tragedy on Waugh is a greater symbol of public policy failure.
To the uninitiated Houstonian on a bike, Waugh is exactly where the city wants you to ride. There is a B-Cycle station at…

Lake Fannin Wilderness Trails
www.texasmountainbiketrails.com
The Lake Fannin Wilderness Trails contain roughly 4 miles of rideable singletrack along the shores of Lake Fannin just off the east bank of the Red River. The trail is very beginner friendly and easy and passes over a large number of bridges. The local community and trail builders have put a lot of effort into making this trail excellent. However, it does get less use than our big trails in the cities and as such it is not as more roughly groomed.

The primary reason to visit Lake Fannin Wilderness Trails is for camping along the lake. There are several primitive cabins, a lodge, and plenty of tent camping. The trail is pretty secluded but does have the…

Houstonians rally for hit-and-run victim as killer is sought
By Carol Christian            www.chron.com

A makeshift memorial where Houston bicyclist Chelsea Norman, 24, was struck by a hit-and-run driver, Norman died from injuries suffered in a weekend hit-and-run accident and was pronounced dead Wednesday at Memorial Hermann Hospital Thursday, Dec. 5, 2013, in Houston. The accident happened about 10:20 p.m. Dec. 1 in the 1600 block of Waugh Drive.

As Houston police investigate a hit-and-run accident that claimed a bicyclist’s life, an impromptu memorial to the young woman has appeared in Montrose where a driver left her mortally injured in the street.
Chelsea Norman, 24, left her job at Whole Foods Market, 705 Waugh Drive, at 10:17 p.m. Dec. 1 and a couple minutes later was struck by an unknown vehicle in the 1600 block of Waugh Drive.
An ambulance took her to Memorial Hermann Hospital, where she was pronounced dead Dec. 4, authorities said.
In memory of Norman, store employees are planning a walk and ride on Dec. 8 from Whole Foods to her nearby apartment on Jackson Street, which they’re calling “complete Chelsea’s ride,” said store team leader Elizabeth Brown.
“We’re gathering in the parking lot at 10 p.m. Sunday and will start the ride at 10:17,” she said. “Here at Whole Foods we’re a very tight-knit family. When…

Dallas living, trail kudos and trail access
by Summit        forums.mtbr.com
What’s up yall – just wanted to drop in and give some props on your local trails. I grew up in Dallas and promptly moved to CA for school and have been bouncing around the west awhile now but have had stints in CO, CA, OH and, for the bast 13 years, Utah. (And no, I’m not LDS.) Come back once or twice a year to visit family, and all we do is eat, drink and shop – pretty much what you do in Dallas, right?
Finally had a connection for a mountain bike to ride – an old Spec. Rockhopper with v-brakes, an ancient Manitou fork with the little rubber fork covers, and a mile-long 110?mm stem. Hahaha. But beggars can’t be…

Dallas to pay nearly $1.2M to mom of dead cyclist
www.valleymorningstar.com
Associated Press |
The Dallas City Council has agreed to pay nearly $1.2 million to the mother of a bicyclist who died after being run over by a police car.
Council members Wednesday approved the settlement over the May death of 51-year-old Fred Bradford Jr.
Virginia Bradford sued the city over the accident during an April police chase as officers investigated suspicious activity in the area.
Dallas police Chief David Brown in August fired two police officers over the incident and…

Missouri City kicks off ‘Show Me City Ride of Pride’
By Zach Haverkamp        www.yourhoustonnews.com

Missouri City officials, State Senator Rodney Ellis and dozens of citizen bicyclists teamed up Sunday morning, Dec. 1, for the debut of the “Show Me City Ride of Pride,” an 8.55-mile route that looped from Missouri City Community Park down to Olympia Parkway, up to Cartwright Road and back again. Though Sunday’s Ride of Pride was the Missouri City’s first, its organizers intend to institutionalize the event as a city tradition.
A total of 44 cyclists participated in the ride, their only entry fee being a toy donation for the city’s annual toy drive in support of Toys for Tots. The route – planned in part local bicycle store and event sponsor Sugar Cycles – took the cyclists on a cruise past Flamingo Island at…

San Antonio bike programs expanding
By Vianna Davila         www.mysanantonio.com
SAN ANTONIO — The City Council will vote Thursday to accept more than $1 million in federal grants for the city’s bike share initiative, B-cycle, and to launch a new bike education program.
The money comes from federal Transportation Enhancement Program funds, which are administered by the Texas Department of Transportation.
The city will also supply more than $278,000 in matching funds for the programs.
The money will allow the city to add more B-cycle stations in the urban core over the next four years. Two stations will be installed next year, said…

Okay, so we’ve established that scheduling an ATX100K race creates extreme weather events. We are the rain-makers, the cold-bringers; we are the ATX100K.  Currently the “Rocky 50” is striving to become the “Rainy 50” and that leads directly to the “Frozen Muddy 50” and a drivetrain rebuild.  And so…. The Rocky 50 date is cancelled – again.
BUT … This gave us at ATX100K an idea.
Why should we, in this age of Garmin, STRAVA, and the…

Austin leads Texas cities in shift away from vehicle use
by Michael Theis, Digital Editor- Austin Business Journal

Mirroring trends seen elsewhere in the nation, Texans living in urban areas are driving less, according to a report from think tank TexPIRG.

The report’s authors say the decreased driving trend means that policymakers should be shifting infrastructure funding priorities away from road projects and into alternative modes of transportation.

“There is a shift away from driving in our cities here in Texas and…

Planning To Give a Bicycle for Christmas? Don’t Forget the Helmet!
www.thevindicator.com (Liberty, TX)
With Christmas approaching, many parents are planning to give their child a new bicycle – maybe even their first bicycle. This is an excellent opportunity to teach children about the importance of wearing a helmet to protect their head. According to National Safe Kids, helmets can reduce the risk of severe brain injury by up to 88%, but only 45% of children wear bike helmets. According to National Safe Kids, bicycles are associated with more injuries in children than any other product except automobiles. Other studies from the organization found that nearly half of the hospitalizations related to bicycles are traumatic injury to the brain. Helmets should be considered an…

SRAM worked with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and other global authorities on a voluntary product recall of SRAM RED 10-speed medium cage rear derailleurs. SRAM has determined that there is a potential for the derailleur parallelogram to jam and no longer shift.
This presents a safety issue. As a result SRAM is actively retrieving and replacing all affected SRAM RED 10-speed medium rear derailleurs. SRAM has already begun a…

Race Your Strengths and Train Your Weaknesses
by Shawn            www.texasmountainbiketrails.com
As I was packing the car for a 13 hour road trip to Colorado last week, I looked up and saw my road bike hanging in the garage. It’s been hanging there for a while… I travelled a lot for work in November and spent very little time on the bike – any bike. Whenever I rode, I rode the mountain bike – because I like it better.

I am a mountain biker through and through. The only reason I ever got a road bike, was so I could extend my riding season by a couple of months when I lived in Colorado and so that when trails finally opened, I could actually pedal the darn thing up the mountain. When we moved to Texas, I started racing road and had a great time doing it. I met a lot of great people and learned a whole lot. One of the things I learned from a former Pro roadie was that you need to race your strengths and train your weaknesses. Sounds super simple, doesn’t it?

By now, you must know what you’re good at and what you need help with. If you don’t, I urge you to sit down and think about it for a minute. In order to get better at anything, you need to know what you need to improve. For me, it was sustained efforts – that’s what I was not good at and where I was getting clobbered. I could sprint with the…

My Thigh Muscles Heaved a Sigh of Relief

Texbiker.net Posted on December 4, 2013 by Rick AnkrumDecember 9, 2016

My thigh muscles heaved a sign of relief when I rode into the Stripes station on FM1314 west of Porter. I chose a northerly route, “New Caney – Roman Forest – Valley Ranch”,  to alternate with the southeast route from yesterday. All went well as long as I pedaled north. Although the official weather reported a 10 mph south breeze I think it was twice that. I turned back to the south at Roman Forest Blvd. moving to the southbound US 59 service road. Right off the bat this moved into the unprotected side where the wind could come at me almost the entire time to the Valley Ranch turn. The legs moved slowly and the square chainrings jumped onto the bike. Resting at Stripes allowed time for the muscles to regroup for the final 11 miles and I pedaled easier and the open road decreased so the wind did not hit so hard.

I did not plan on riding Roman Forest Blvd into Roman Forest which is good because it is being resurfaced. The inbound lanes were handling the outbound traffic as well while the road crews worked on the outbound side. I suspect this is part of the new community being built just east of the railroad tracks. It is called Tavola and the website says the homes will be available in spring 2015. This area was the site of a much discussed dinosaur park that never reach fruition.

There is some other construction on the west side of US59 in the same area that is somewhat of a mystery. The sign beside the service road is so faded that I cannot read the name or information. The picture depicts some buildings curved around some waterway. The construction equipment is digging and moving a lot of dirt to build the waterway. At some point the faded sign will be replaced, I hope.

Between the construction on the west and east of US59 at Roman Forest and the Grand Parkway work at Community Drive my riding routes are getting jostled around. 2014 will require some route ingenuity.

Overcast sky did not keep the temperature from getting to 79 degrees. The wind that tired to do in my legs was constant. My wardrobe today was summer attire: short sleeve jersey and shorts. This was the first ride without double jerseys in several weeks. Tomorrow the weather will begin to change and my riding will go into hibernation. Rumor has it getting into the upper 20’s Tuesday and Wednesday. This is well below my 60 degree threshold!

I biked 35.02 miles today and even with the wind averaged 15.2 mph. December miles moved up to 146.11 and year to date now totals 6132 miles. Link to RideWithGPS.com metrics and map.
