About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Spongy Front Tire and a Brutal Wind

Texbiker.net Posted on November 7, 2013 by Rick AnkrumDecember 16, 2016

The optimism I expressed after Tuesday’s ride about pulling the wire out of my front tire did not last. Today I walked out to the garage to leave on the ride and squeezed the front tire. It was spongy. I thought about airing it up and going on the ride but decided to fix the flat so I wouldn’t get stopped someplace not my choosing. I removed the front wheel and let the rest of the air out. Pulling the tube out I searched for a hole with the tube puffed up with air. My hands could feel any escaping air so I went inside for the water test. It didn’t take long. The tiny hole was about a foot from the valve stem. I marked the spot with an ink pen and went outside to put a patch on it. After roughing up the tube I got a patch out of my kit but the adhesive was dried up. The second patch had the same problem. Good thing I decided to fix this at home. The third patch was good so on t went. Based on past experience I aired the tube up to check my work. The edge of the patch in one spot was not sticking so I added some glue and it looked good. After putting the tube back in the tire and airing it up everything looked good. This all took about half an hour so I did not leave until 2:04.

Yesterday I stayed home because of the rain threat. Well I also was waiting on my new Nexus 5 phone to arrive too. The rain did come but it only lasted about 10 minutes and the streets dried off pretty quick so I could’ve went. After the rain the temperature was supposed to drop but it took several hours for it to happen. Overnight though it went down to 47 degrees and by the time I left on the ride it moved up to 68. The wind though made it feel much cooler. 15 mph from the NNE with 24 mph gusts made me glad that I chose a windbreaker jacket, long sleeve jersey, short sleeve jersey, leg warmers in addition to my shorts. I wore regular bike gloves and this didn’t cause a problem with my fingers. Thankfully the sun was mostly out. The clouds couldn’t make up their mind if they were going off to the south of coming back to the north.

At times riding in the shade and into the wind was wintry feeling. One corner emphasized this. Riding west on FM1960 after coming off the Lake Houston causeway I made a right turn and the wind blasted off the lake and across the flat land. Not only did I need extra effort to overcome the wind but the wind chill hit too. I was glad I had 3 miles of riding since stopping at the Huffman Chevron to warm back up.

Since daylight savings time ended the sun seems to be racing to sundown. The ride today during the last 11 miles seemed to be later than it actually was. I got home at 4:33 and the temperature had dropped to 65. After the sun goes down the forecast says 45 will be the low. Tomorrow could be a chilly ride day.

The route totaled 31.3 miles. I shortened it a couple of miles due to the flat repair. Even with the wind I averaged 15.1 mph. November miles stand at 129.87. Year to date increased to 5676 miles. I got my Garmin Edge 510 back on the correct screen to record the intervals now.

Texas Bicycling Daily News Roundup November 6th

Texbiker.net Posted on November 6, 2013 by Rick AnkrumNovember 6, 2013

Ride The NETT 2013 Review
by Shawn McAfee            www.texasmountainbiketrails.com

Long Hard & Dirty, that is absolutely the NETT and it fits perfectly with the Spinistry motto.
For those that have been hiding under a bridge the past month or so (trolls), last Saturday was the first ever Ride The NETT, a mountain bike rally of sorts that drew over 200 people to the cities of Farmersville, Celeste, Wolf City, Ladonia, Ruxton and Paris.
Here at TXMTB we’ve done lots of coverage of the Northeast Texas Trail (NETT) and rightfully so! It’s an…

Couple rides to help wounded soldiers
Texas Honor Ride has raised more than $900K
Jo Anne Embleton Jacksonville Daily Progress
RUSK — Rusk residents Dennis and Pat Schwartz have been bike enthusiasts since the early days of their marriage, and it wasn’t unusual to see the couple out on a spin, with a son each riding behind them.
So when the Texas Honor Ride project began seven years ago as a fundraiser to help families of wounded warriors receiving treatment at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, the couple – then living in Houston – immediately threw their support behind it.
“I’m a veteran myself,” explained Dennis, who served an eight-year-stint with the U.S. Air Force in the mid-1960s to early ’70s. “We’ve been biking enthusiasts a long time and it just fell into…

11/23 Sansom 66ish (Fort Worth)
by Spinistry            forums.mtbr.com
https://www.bikereg.com/net/sansom-66ish
Is this the toughest endurance mountain bike event in North Texas? Many will attempt it, few will complete it. Time restrictions are tight, margin for error is slim and the course is difficult. Sansom Park is NOT your typical urban mountain bike trail. 1500′ of elevation per each 11 mile lap through loose rock climbs and descents and nary a straightaway over 200 feet long. The trail is fun and challenging and we’re doing every bit of it!
Field is limited to a maximum of 100 participants. We expect to sell out before the day of event but you never know for sure. Event will be rescheduled if weather creates an issue.
This is a distance event with a timed cutoff(s) not a…

Texas Bicycling Blog and News Roundup November 5th

“Ride Texas” Cyclists begin Pedaling in Wichita Falls
www.texomashomepage.com

It’s still dark out as riders meet at a local fast food chain before a 525 mile bike ride.

Inside, folks are chatting with excitement, while they take in some last minute fuel for their trek.

These cyclists, most veterans themselves, are part of “Ride Texas.”

“Warriors on Wheels,” pedaling to make a difference.

“When you lose somebody that you have been friends with for so many years it’s like losing a part of your family and if you can give back to someone in similar circumstances to me it makes it all worth wild,” said Heath Werner, one of the cyclists.

Like Werner, Charles Lemon says he is riding in memory of his best friend who was lost in combat, but Lemon won’t be…

Race Preview – Georgetown Cyclocross Festival – Nov 9-10, 2013
joeyTWOwheels        texascx.com
You know, as a group we’re a pretty great bunch of citizens. We race bikes for fitness and fun (and pain), some live clean lives, we care about nature. Sometimes we even get to race for a cause. Which is always the case when we head to the Georgetown Cyclocross Festival (#GCFCX), a fundraiser for CX Project 2015.

CX Project 2015 exists to train youth and juniors for Nationals in Austin in January of 2015. The kids participate for free – practicing weekly – and they race for free this weekend (which costs the promoter about $8 per racer in fees). It’s an amazing program that is growing interest in…

Pesky Wire in the Tire

Texbiker.net Posted on November 5, 2013 by Rick AnkrumDecember 16, 2016

I rode a northerly route today going to New Caney and then to Roman Forest Blvd. on US59. Up to that point the wind was my friend but making the u-turn under US59 at Roman Forest Blvd. I hit the wind from the SE. As I was riding on the service road just before that u-turn I started to hear a tap-tap sound from one of my tires. I stopped under US59 and inspected my front tire to find a 2″ piece of wire sticking in the tire. Once I removed that the tapping sound went away. I think this averted a future flat. I plan on replacing both tires in about 100 miles. At that distance each tire will have about 4,000 miles on them. I have had good results with the Continental Gatorskin tires and two are in my bike stockpile of stuff.

The overcast sky wanted to become rain but it just didn’t happen. That was the reason I chose this route so I would be close to places to get out of the rain if the situation arose. The wind was stiff at 18 mph but I still managed to average 15.1 mph over the 33.85 mile route. Riding with the wind for the first 15 or 16 miles let me build up my average speed so that when I got the headwind I still stayed in the 15 mph range. This is easier than trying to overcome a slow average speed at the beginning of a ride.

Sometime prior to the ride I changed something on my Garmin Edge 510 so the screen did not display the normal screen and did not chime when I passed through the 5 mile lap points. I tried setting various things several times but the screen kept going back to the wrong one. Finally I gave up and waited until I got home to find the problem. With this  problem I did not get the 5 mile interval breakdowns I normally have. Once I got home I noticed that I had it set on “Race” instead of “Ride” for the type of activity. Changing to “Ride” brought back the screens I wanted. You would think the data would convert over but so far I haven’t figured out how to do that.

With the temperature at 77 degrees I chose a long sleeve jersey thinking I would not need two jerseys to stay warm. The wind was a little chilly when I stopped but while I was riding the heat I generated was enough to counteract the wind chill.

November miles now total 98.56. Year to date I biked 5645 miles.

Tomorrow has a 70% chance of rain so I probably will not get to ride.
