About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

NOVEMBER GATEWAY PARK WORKFEST PHOTO NARRATIVE
by M2RIDER        fwmba.org
Although FWMBA hosted a small, impromptu Gateway Park Workfest back in October the morning of Biketoberfest, last Saturday, November 2 officially marked the beginning date of the 2013-2014 trail building season at Gateway Park. Below is a photo narrative of the day’s festivities…

Cyclist Without Legs to Bike 710 Miles; Says He is ‘Pedaling for Justice’
www.latinopost.com

A business owner from Chihuahua, Mexico who lost both of his legs at the hands of cartel thugs, is now bicycling across Texas to raise awareness on the violence facing many in his homeland.
Carlos Gutierrez, 35, is riding a bicycle from El Paso to Austin in an effort he is calling “Pedaling for Justice.” The trip is 710 miles from start to finish and he plans to arrive in the capital city on Nov. 9 and hold a rally to conclude the journey.
But this 710-mile journey is not only being done for the sake of…

Dark Green Radar Blobs

Texbiker.net Posted on November 4, 2013 by Rick AnkrumDecember 16, 2016

Today I would normally ride to the north since the last ride was south and east but looking at the gray clouds and the weather radar made me rethink that direction. I kept watching the dark green blobs move around on the radar and they stayed west of US59 but riding north would put me closer to the green blobs which could turn and get me wet.

11-4-2013 Radar Start

So I headed out south and east to Huffman. I hoped the rain would stay to the west and north. One thing that I struggled with almost all the way to Huffman was the 16 mph wind. It seemed that no matter what direction I rode it was a headwind. While I pedaled east over Lake Houston on FM1960 I saw another biker riding west on the other side of the causeway with almost no effort and I looked forward to that leg on the return trip.

While the temperature was 71 degrees the wind made it feel cooler so I was glad I wore a long sleeve jersey and my windbreaker jacket. Pedaling into the wind increased my heat output so I did not notice the wind chill so much but when I stopped at the Huffman Chevron for a Diet Sunkist finding a spot out of the wind was not easy. They had a door held open and standing behind it offered some shelter. By the time I finished the drink I had cooled down enough that I felt chilly when I got back on the bike and headed out for the last 11 miles. These miles were the ones I had been waiting for: that tailwind going west over Lake Houston helped me to ride around 20 mph and regain some of the speed I lost battling the wind before. I knew why the other rider rode effortlessly.

The sky was still a dark gray as I headed home and I wondered if I would get caught by rain.

Looking west from the Lake Houston Causeway

Looking west from the Lake Houston Causeway

I made it home dry but wind blown.

The ride was 32.13 miles long. Due my legs not sending enough power to the pedals my average speed was 14.7 mph. I did better speed wise once I turned back towards home in Huffman. November miles are now 64.72 and year to date I biked 5611 miles. With the number of days left in the year I potentially can reach 6200 for the year, maybe more.

Interview: Kent Page – Teacher and San Antonio Bicycle Commuter
bike4heck.com

As my readers know I’m an Elementary Teacher. I’m also the Science facilitator for my campus. At a resent facilitator meeting I was able to sit next to Kent Page. In that time I learned he was a bicycle commuter. I asked Kent if he was interested in doing an interview for my blog. I think you will enjoy Bike4Heck.com’s first local interview:

Bike4Heck.com:  Tell us about yourself?
Kent:  I’m an elementary science teacher. My greatest accomplishments are being married with two kids.
Bike4Heck.com: How long have you been commuting to work?
Kent: I’ve started riding my bike to teach piano lessons before I had a driver’s license as a way to save money for a car. Ironic, no? So I’ve been commuting now for about 300,000 years.
Bike4Heck.com: How long is your commute?
Kent: From my home to my classroom is about 5 miles using the ruler on Google Earth. The drive is about 8 miles by car. Bikers learn circling around the back sides of…

High school mountain biking rising in popularity
‘It’s a big hootenanny in the woods with a bunch of high schoolers.’
by Julie Kailus            www.grindtv.com

Mountain biking is climbing the ranks of cool high school sports. Thanks to a boost from the NICA (National Interscholastic Cycling Association), the sport has been growing up to 30 percent a year since 2009.
There are now nearly 3,000 student-athletes across 10 leagues and approximately 1,000 licensed coaches, according to NICA Executive Director Austin McInerny. Inspired by the inaugural NorCal High School Cycling League, which started 13 years ago with roots at Berkeley High in California, NICA programs in mountain-bike friendly states like Utah, Colorado, Minnesota, and Arizona have…
