About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Cyclocross is Coming!
by djcurtin            Bicycle Sport Shop’s Offical Cycling Blog
This weekend’s Bicycle Sport Shop Six Shooter marks the start of the Texas Cyclocross calendar and with a couple days left to pre-register, it looks like this may well be the biggest cross race Texas has ever seen! With fields for every level of rider, great prizes from Specialized, Enve Composites, Grease Monkey Wipes, Grimpeur Bros. Speciality Coffee, Thunderbird Energetica, and Epic Bar, and equal payouts for the men’s and women’s open races thanks to Udell Direct and River City Market–a first for Texas CX–it’s sure to be, well, epic! Add in the fun that Team Super Awesome brings to every cross race, a kid-specific course for the little ones, and our own cyclocross club, including reigning…

Comfort “Country” Ride
Hill Country Bicycle Touring Club
Saturday, October 12th:  Ride will start at 9:00 a.m. at Comfort Park, in the town of Comfort out I-10 W.  Directions:  Take the first Comfort exit, and stay on Hwy 27 where it splits from Hwy 87 in the town of Comfort. The park will be on a complete city block, on the left side before you exit the town.  Plenty of parking is available.  Bring energy bars and drinks.  No services available on ride, but the restrooms at Comfort Park are usually open.

This is called a “country ride” ride, because it takes us down some quiet country lanes that are virtually devoid of traffic.  Very flat terrain for the most part, with a few hills that are not that demanding. This 28-mile route will appeal to all levels. Your ride leader had cycled this route before, and…

Skills Clinic #95A Riding With Flow (Members Only)
Dallas Off-Road Bicycle Association
Saturday, October 12, 2013        9:00 AM
River Legacy Park
703 N.W. Green Oaks Blvd, Arlington, TX (map)

What: how to ride a mountain bike trail with “flow”.
Riding with flow is an often heard term among riders in the Dallas Fort Worth area. Yet the term isn’t listed in either online Mountain Bike Dictionary, or the Dictionary of Mountain Bike Slang. So I looked in the Mountain Bike Texas Dictionary, and still no flow. So I think it is a local phenomenon. Perhaps because we have more trails around here that don’t have good flow, that make you slow down and negotiate tight twisty momentum kills features. River Legacy has flow. And that is where Mark Cayton, “Oldjackbob” will be teaching his flow clinic for the 4th time. Mark is a big proponent of…

Back on My Carbon Fiber Bike

Texbiker.net Posted on October 1, 2013 by Rick AnkrumDecember 16, 2016

I did not get to ride as far as I planned but I did ride. I left on the ride at 4:00 and returned at 5:35. Between the sun coming down earlier and a meeting at church I biked 21.86 miles on my road bike! Yea!! Finally back on my favorite bike. It felt like old times. I did notice when I ride with my hands on the brake hoods I feel stretched. It’s amazing how the body can remember a position even when you haven’t been on the bike in a month. No problems surfaced on my bike from the collision. Carbon fiber frames must be some strong stuff.

The plan was to go biking when I got back from physical therapy this morning. My right shoulder continues to be sore but the therapy is helping. After the session I can move my arm much better without the muscle yelling at me. When I got home I was catching up on some emails and then I switched over to check the radar. Lo and behold there was a rain cell headed right for Kingwood. Not too much longer and it started to rain. Eating lunch I hoped the rain would go away but it stayed so I wrapped up the grocery list with my wife and went shopping. I thought the streets would dry off while I was gone. Back from shopping at 3:30 the streets much drier I got dressed and headed out going south to Atascocita and Walden.

It felt great to be back on my road bike. The legs remembered how to turn the cranks. All of the replaced parts worked as they are supposed to. I might need to adjust the front brake a little but only if I am searching for perfection.

After yesterday’s ride I downloaded the full owner’s manual for the Garmin Edge 510. With the manual I set the lap length to 5.00 miles and made some other tweaks to agree with the Edge 500 I used to have. I think I am getting the hang on how to use the 510. My ANT+ sensors on the road bike synced up with the 510 as I rolled down the driveway. Life is getting better. When I got home I saw a message at the bottom of the 510 that today’s ride was the longest I rode with the 510. I plan on getting that message again with a longer ride distance.

My plan for tomorrow is to ride in the morning since I do not take therapy again until Thursday. Hopefully the weather cooperates!

El Paso BikeShare funding up for debate again
By Cindy Ramirez / El Paso Times
Funding for the city’s proposed BikeShare Program will again be debated by City Council on Tuesday, when representatives will ask that the allocated money be transferred to a pilot program aimed at reducing border wait times at the international bridges.
According to city documents, the council will discuss requesting a letter of support from the Metropolitan Planning Organization to transfer the funding to the bridge program because it can provide “a more significant impact on air quality than the proposed bike share.”
Also on the agenda for Tuesday is discussion on…

Biking for Boobies
www.conchovalleyhomepage.com

Two young men decided to take on a 3,700 mile journey across the nation on their bicycles. This 75-day journey is to raise awareness for breast cancer, and on their 36th day they made it to San Angelo.

“We’re gonna dance with Ellen, you know do the Ellen dance with her, and it’s gonna be great because Ellen is a huge supporter of breast cancer research, and we’re big fans of how charitable and…

What A Month! Glad It Is Almost Over

Texbiker.net Posted on September 30, 2013 by Rick AnkrumDecember 16, 2016

Riding 20.83 miles today is the longest ride in September. That says how September collapsed from the September 3rd collision. Not complaining since this could’ve been way worse. I increased the daily mileage each ride to prepare to get back on my road bike this week. September mileage totals 120.90. Pretty low. December is my usual low mileage month but probably not this year.

The left leg swelling continues to shrink which is great. Tomorrow I go to physical therapy for my right shoulder. It still has sore muscles.

I almost used the road bike but I am waiting on my new rear view mirror. Well I am waiting no more. When I pulled up to the driveway at the end of the ride I saw the mail arrived and inside the mailbox an envelope with my new mirror waited to be opened. This is what I was waiting for.

Texbiker Mirror

So tomorrow, weather willing, I plan on getting back on the Motobecane Le Champion CF road bike.

The weather today started off with some rain but by the afternoon when I left on the ride the clouds let a little blue through. To the west some dark clouds hung up there but no rain during the ride. As I pedaled along I planned spots to get out of the rain if it did come along. Yesterday the weather also include a dose of rain. The streets were damp until late afternoon so no thought of riding on the trails. The humidity was high today at 67% and the temperature hovered around 85 degrees. The 9.2 mph breeze just moved the wet air around some. When I got home my bandana was soaked with perspiration. I applied sunscreen remembering the UV rays come through clouds too.
