About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

What’s Back There? – September 27th Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on September 27, 2013 by Rick AnkrumDecember 16, 2016

I got back on my mountain bike today for a ride on the Kingwood Trails. Yesterday I had too many other things happening so no biking. Pushing the start button on the 510 going out of my driveway at 11:32 I rode to Northpark Drive. This would take me to the trails but as I rode I think I felt a couple of rain drops. The clouds darkened some from earlier in the morning and I thought they might be a chance of rain.

On the trails I rode to the south with my destination being close to FM1960 before turning back towards home. The route today ended up 15.82 miles, about 4 miles more than the other two rides this week. As I biked I wondered if maybe tomorrow I try my road bike. The one thing holding me back is no rear view mirror.

Searching online I found a mirror I had not seen before: the Monkey Mirrors. I watched a couple of reviews plus the installation video on the seller’s website. One of the little problems I have with rear view mirrors is getting them to stick on my helmet and not droop. The Monkey Mirror mounting appears to solve this problem. I ordered one with the Texbiker logo (vanity I think) and I hope it arrives early next week. Turning my head to check for traffic is not easy. I am spoiled using a mirror over the years.

No rain during my ride but the clouds stayed in place and the sun was behind them. The temperature decreased from yesterday staying at 86 for the ride. Amongst the trees the wind was not a factor but when I came out of them the east 13.8 mph wind slowed me down some.

Biking helps my left leg but my sit bone area is still sore so I need to remind myself to stand up when a bump comes along.

Reveille Peak Ride Pics – 9-22-13
www.austinbike.com

After all of the rain that we had this past week, it was amazing how well the trails held up. We missed the San Antonio crew who headed out just minutes before we got there.  But we had fun nonetheless and the ride was punctuated by a phenomenal sidewall rip that caused me to have to perform a trail side surgery and then mount a hasty retreat back home.
Everyone else continued on and had a good time on the trails while I…

What is TXMTB?
by Shawn McAfee            www.texasmountainbiketrails.com

I’ve spent the last few months really thinking about the brand behind Texas Mountain Bike Trails.
What do I want it to be.
What direction do I want the website to take.
What do my races stand for and what is their purpose.
But most importantly to me.
How do I want to impact the lives of readers (and locals) with what I provide.
And despite spending months of time thinking about it I still don’t know exactly the right answer.
But, I do have a better idea and I know that at it’s core the brand revolves around the three E’s of XC.
The Three E’s of XC
What is TXMTBThe three E’s is something that has kind of grown on me while thinking about this question and it stands for the three things I hope to provide. …

Where Was My Brain? – September 25th Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on September 25, 2013 by Rick AnkrumDecember 16, 2016

Yesterday I wondered why I had to ride in a very small rear gear. I pedaled at a high cadence and the speed just wouldn’t get past 12 or 13 mph. Today I had the same problem but my brain kicked in and I looked down at the crank to see I was in the granny gear. Shifting up to the middle ring brought the speed I was looking for. It was probably good yesterday to pedal the small ring because I was just getting back on the bike. I don’t remember changing the gear so I never thought to check it.

Fall arrived Sunday but the temperature has not let up. Yesterday the temperature equaled the record high and today when I got back home my weather station reported 95.9 degrees and later I noticed 96.4. The almost cloudless sky allowed the sun to keep the trails hot even with the shade. I applied sunscreen before riding and glad of it. When I got up this morning my weather station showed 69 degrees.

Riding my mountain bike on the Kingwood trails felt great and the higher gearing required more effort. My left leg’s hematoma appears to be getting smaller. More physical therapy tomorrow afternoon. 12.18 miles at a 11.2 mph average speed was much better than yesterday. I remembered to tap the lap button on the Edge 510 today. I am stilling trying to figure out changing screens on the 510. I swiped the main screen and the second one came up but it took many swipes to get back to the home screen.

I have several things on my schedule tomorrow so I am not sure if I will get to ride.
