About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Shinny Parts – July 9th Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on July 9, 2013 by Rick AnkrumJanuary 6, 2017

Yesterday we finally got some serious rain. As a result I took the day off and did some maintenance on the Motobecane Le Champion CF road bike. Previously I purchased a Wipperman Connex 10s8 chain, Shimano Ultegra 6700 11-28t cassette and what I thought was the inner front chainring for the FSA crank. Everything went as planned until I got to the chainring; it was the wrong tooth count and diameter. So I settled for a new chain which I waxed before installing and the new cassette. I replaced a SRAM PC1071 chain that I installed on 10/20/2011. The SRAM chain came about because my original Shimano chain broke while I biked down W. Lake Houston Parkway. I don’t normally break chains. Recently I noticed about once each ride my chain would skip so I figured the drive train is probably worn. With the Wipperman chain I removed one set of links thinking this might be the cause for the chain skipping. During today’s ride I did not skip so maybe this fixed it. Just in case I ordered new jockey pulleys for the rear derailleur and the correct 34 tooth inner front chainring. I will install those when I get them in a week or so.

The nice shinny chain and rear cassette performed perfectly on today’s ride to Roman Forest Blvd. and the return through Valley Ranch and the other subdivisions. The rain increased the humidity level a bit with 76% (83 degrees) as I started the ride at 10:04. By the time I finished at 12:59 the humidity dropped slightly to 54% (91 degrees). I sweated heavily during the ride probably leaving a trail on the pavement. I wore a new red lightning bolt Nashbar Clavis jersey I got back from exchanging three that were too large. I ordered mediums but they were like extra large. They exchanged the large ones for small and they fit much better. I also got the blue and green jerseys. I think the color and lightning bolt stand out.

I rode a little further than I thought I would on this route ending up at 35.14 miles with a 15.7 mph average speed. When I checked at 30 miles the average was 15.8 mph so I only lost .1 mph going through the residential streets in Kingwood. July mileage increased to 250 and year to date I biked 3575 miles.

The weather will be heating up over the next several days with 99 tomorrow, 102 Friday and 104 on Saturday. I will need to leave early to avoid the highest temperatures.

Midland Cyclists raise money for MS, train for 150-mile bike ride
By Tyler White        www.mywesttexas.com

As Betty Shaffer pedaled stationary bicycle on Sunday outside of Sam’s Club, a blender retrofitted into the bike’s frame crushed and pulsed ice cubes, milk, assorted fruits and ice cream — the “key ingredient” of a good smoothie.

Shaffer and several other volunteers took turns peddling $3 and $5 smoothies from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. during the Spinathon fundraiser leading up to Cactus & Crude Ride, which is July 20-21.

“We’re on a mission to wipe out MS,” said Tammie Porter, a volunteer with the…

El Paso City Council to mull details of bike-sharing plan
By Cindy Ramirez \ El Paso Times
A planned citywide bicycle-sharing program could get a boost Tuesday, when the City Council is expected to consider approving an interlocal agreement among several transportation organizations that would help fund and manage it.

The proposed BikeShare Program would allow riders to check out the bicycles for a fee at several stations across the city, including Downtown and near the University of Texas at El Paso.

Actual locations would be determined later, but it’s projected that 20 automated kiosks would house 10 bicycles apiece, according to city documents. Global Positioning Systems would likely be used to calculate miles traveled and to…

A ‘Cycling Madman’ Pedals His Way Across the World
By COREY KILGANNON and JEFFREY E. SINGER        cityroom.blogs.nytimes.com

Lai Likun, 41, of China, is visiting New York City, but he does not plan on renting a CitiBike.

Short-term rentals are not useful to Mr. Lai. He has already been through six sturdy bikes over the past three years, having pedaled 31,000 miles through four continents and nearly 25 countries as part of a five-year solo bicycle tour around the world.

Mr. Lai, a factory manager, says his next destination is South America and is flying to Beijing on Tuesday to straighten out his visa. Then he will head to the Pacific islands. …

… Mr. Lai came to the United States last December, arriving in New York City, before making his way to Philadelphia, Washington, Atlanta, then to Texas and into Mexico. After a side trip to…

My Letter to HEB Customer Service sent on 7/2/13:
Dear HEB #623 Plus Store Manager of
9238 North Loop 1604 West
San Antonio, TX 78249
I’m so glad that the new HEB Plus near my house has bicycle racks.
But sadly I’ve seen them reduced to shopping cart storage, motorcycle parking and picnic table storage. I’ve live less than a mile a away and often take my bicycle to go grocery shopping at this great store.

But lately finding a place to lock up is becoming rare. Can we please have the bicycle racks for Bicycles! Not Motorcycles, golf carts, shopping carts and picnic tables. I often blog about my cycling trips and have…

Retailers report positive sales in May
Bicycle Retailer
BOULDER, CO (BRAIN) — After three consecutive months of decline, IBDs rebounded and posted the first month of positive sales this year, according to Leisure Trends Group. Compared with May 2012, all merchandise gained 4 percent in units and 6 percent in dollars to reach $393 million, the largest May dollar volume since at least 2009.

While a very positive sign, it was not enough to offset a particularly difficult beginning to the year. Through May, all merchandise sales fell 7 percent to settle at $1.3 billion, $93 million shy of the same period last year.

“The first four months of 2013 were a stark contrast to the record sales of 2012—sales at IBDs were down nearly 11 percent. May, with its 6 percent growth compared to last year, provided a…

NETT Awareness Ride
by Shawn        Texas Mountain Bike Trails
The Northeast Texas Trail (NETT) is a rail-to-trail program that is working to develop a trail system through 19 cities from Famersville to New Boston, 130 miles one way. The vision of the trail is held by the Northeast Texas Trail Coalition who has applied for their 501c status. They are working long-term to develop the full distance of the NETT and its estimated 90-100 bridges. The potential for eco-tourism relative to the trail is tremendous. When the rail was laid steam engines needed water every 8-10 miles so that is where station and later towns were established. Today the NETT is everywhere from pristine asphalt to granite to rail bed to completely overgrown. Some sections are currently impassable due to growth or adjacent landowner disputes over trail use.

To bring attention to the NETT (and to have a little fun) Dean Nix from Dallas plans to ride the trail from end-to-end and back. This 260 mile ride has never been done but one day it will be…

The Fixed Touring Mini-Cat
Biking in Dallas
Wait, wait! What’s a Mini-Cat? Fixed Touring explains:

On July 13 2013 Fixed Touring will embark upon a mission to provide the city of Dallas with a bicycle race like they have never seen!

What is the problem with bicycle racing as it is, you say? Well, touring races are very long and fairly uneventful not to mention hard to watch. Criteriums are easier to watch, but repetitive. The Alley-Cat — now there’s a race! However, it is probably the hardest to observe due to the sporadic and unpredictable nature. Solution: we are going to wrap an action packed Alley-Cat around the spectators. Watch as the bravest cyclists in town battle it out through…

Bicycling from Compo to San Francisco: ‘It Was Worth It’
By James Lomuscio        www.westportnow.com

For Alec Bernard of Westport and Allie Wills of Texas, two Cornell University students, the 3,297-mile bicycle trek from Compo Beach to San Francisco—a trip that began May 18 and finished July 1—was anything but uneventful.

Allie Wills and Alec Bernard celebrate their arrival July 1 at Baker Beach in Golden Gate Park in San Francisco, 46 days after setting off from Westport’s Compo Beach.

In addition to seven flats, a chain break and searing temperatures going across Nevada’s Great Basin Desert, the couple faced flash floods in Pennsylvania, riding within 10 miles of a Missouri tornado, rerouting around Colorado forest fires, and being…

Central Trail Construction (South) Coming Along Nicely
Bike Friendly Richardson
We’ve been keeping an eye on the construction of the southern extension of the Central Trail.

Central Trail is the trail that runs parallel to Central Expressway, along the DART Rail Red Line tracks. Currently, it starts at Renner Road at Routh Creek Parkway (where it connects to the Spring Creek Trail), and runs south to DART’s Arapaho Center Station – well, sort of. In our opinion, it really stops at about Alma Road, and becomes a sidewalk, along Greenville, until it reaches Arapaho Center Station. Read more about that here.

This new addition is designed to extend Central Trail south, from Arapaho Road to Buckingham Road – at the city limit. Future extensions will…

Some Scattered Drops – July 7th Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on July 7, 2013 by Rick AnkrumJanuary 6, 2017

My original plan was to bike to the north but as I looked at the weather radar I saw several clumps of rain so I changed my route to the south. Rolling out the driveway at 11:37 the dark clouds hovered to the west and north. I could feel a coolness in the air probably from the rain in the distance and the temperature went down two degrees during my 1:43:06 riding time (89 to 87). No rain came across the route until I started to ride on the W. Lake Houston Parkway bridge over the San Jacinto River. The rain was really a few sprinkles every few seconds and I think I perspired more moisture than I got from the rain. By the time I crossed FM1960 the sprinkles went away. No other rain bothered to come my way.

I did not ride hard today averaging 14.9 mph on the 24.63 mile route. I mainly wanted to get some miles in as an easy day. With today’s ride July mileage moved to 214.87 (for the week as well). Year to date now totals 3540 miles.

No other bicyclists were sighted today. The rain threat may have held them back. Tomorrow includes a 50% chance of rain.
