About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

15000 Miles – July 6th Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on July 6, 2013 by Rick AnkrumJanuary 6, 2017

I biked to the north extending the route to SR242 and then west to Old Houston Road turning southeast on FM1314 to run back to home. When I left home at 8:51 the temperature was 78 with 70% humidity. While it felt cool it did not take long for the high humidity to bring perspiration out of my pores. As I progressed along the route the temperature climbed (92 at the end) and the humidity to drop to 47%.  I could tell the difference when I stopped at the Stripes station on FM1314 to rest, eat a snack and drink a Diet Pepsi. The breeze from my left dried my skin after a few minutes sitting in the shade. By the time I resumed my clothes were almost dry and the sweat stopped dripping.

This route does not cross the paths of too many bicyclists like the route to Huffman does on a Saturday. I did see 3 others in Kingwood but once I was to US59 there were no more. Sometimes I see other bicyclists on SR242 but not today.

The sky was covered by scattered clouds. When I checked the weather at Stripes on my phone it said there was a chance of showers at 4:15. We need the rain badly. The chance of rain increases tomorrow and Monday so after the ride I put the top up and the windows in the Jeep Wrangler. I do not want to get caught like I did back in June.

A couple of times I checked my average speed and after a slow start getting out of Kingwood my average speed started to increase. At 25 miles it was 16 mph, 35 miles it increased to 16.2 mph and stayed there at 40 miles. Riding through the Kingwood streets lowered it to 16.0 mph over the 44.11 mile route. For the month of June I stand at 190.24 miles and 3516 miles year to date. I did not realize it but yesterday’s ride pushed my Motobecane Le Champion CF over 15,000 miles since I bought it in October 2010.

Weather permitting I plan on biking tomorrow.

Early Start After a Day Off – July 5th Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on July 5, 2013 by Rick AnkrumFebruary 10, 2017

After taking a day off for the 4th of July parade and fireworks I got back to riding today. Because of some other commitments I needed to leave earlier than I have lately so I was out the driveway at 8:39 and back at 11:17. The temperature was a pleasant 79 when I started and climbed to 89 by the time I finished. The partly cloudy sky and calm wind helped to make the ride enjoyable although not particularly fast as I averaged 15.5 mph over the 33.41 mile route.

I modified my planned route slightly to add a mile or two. The route took me south through Atascocita before crossing W. Lake Houston Parkway into Walden. Traffic was light I think because some people did not work today. The garbage trucks were out though. From Walden I rode east over Lake Houston around Huffman with a stop at the usual Huffman Chevron. I thought about just stopping long enough to refill my water bottle but I gave in to a Diet Pepsi and resting under the canopy outside.

Up to this point the calm wind had provided resistance whenever I rode east or south. Now that I biked to the west on FM1960 the calm wind was just that and I was able to increase my speed some. When I was riding east over Lake Houston on FM1960 there were two bicyclists going west. I waved but they were concentrating on pedaling and did not see me wave, I guess. Later as I rode north on West Lake Houston Parkway on the bridge another bicyclist went the opposite direction on the sidewalk and we exchanged waves.

July mileage now stands at 146.13 and year to date is 3472 miles.
