I biked to the north today to New Caney and then to Roman Forest Blvd. The wind was helpful while I headed this direction but when I turned south at Roman forest Blvd. it was my enemy. I didn’t think the wind would be so tough and when I got home I saw why it was: SW at 8 mph with 17 mph gusts at the airport. Whenever I rode in the open away from trees and buildings it was the hardest. The wind did not hold back my average speed overall since I ended up at 15.6 mph over the 30.64 mile route.
Taking the “back way” out of Kingwood was different and set me up to bike north on Loop 494 all the way to Roman Forest Blvd. The heat was building up by the time I got home at 12:30 hitting 94 degrees while it was 85.8 when I left home at 10:17. In an attempt to minimize my time in the sun I did not stop for my usual Diet Pepsi break just refilling my water bottle twice along the way.
The ride put me over the 800 mile point with June now at 826.71 miles, the week is 168.29 miles and year to date is 3266.
Temperature for Saturday could reach 106. I will need to leave earlier tomorrow.
HOUSTON – The city of Houston announced on Wednesday it is adding 150 miles of bike trails.
Houston already has 300 miles of bike and hike trails. Many of the new trails will run along the bayous and some will be dedicated to bikes only while some trails will share the road with traffic. The new trails will cost $200 million. Half of the bill will be paid for by private donations.
With the mid-season break almost upon us, the last race before the hiatus is the Texas State Time Trial in Lytle, TX. Not one of our ladies has ever participated in this event; we decided it would be wise to get together to practice for the team time trial. This is where four members complete a relatively flat 40K course and rotate efficiently for about 30 minutes and then swing a u-turn and make like a barn sour horse and haul butt home. You can drop one person from…

Deal paves way for 160-mile bayou trail effort

Houston City Council on Wednesday approved an agreement with the Houston Parks Board to tackle the ambitious trails plan voters approved in a $166 million bond issue last November.
The Bayou Greenways 2020 project fulfills a century-old vision first laid out by urban planner Arthur Comey in 1912, with a $205 million, 160-mile connected networks of citywide trails. As the name implies, the…
This has the Tyler Biking Club and other East Texas bicyclists worried about their future plans to ride on Toll Road 49.
“It’s very hard for me to see my way clear to vote, to really allow bicycles on a 80-plus mile an hour toll road. It’s just very, very difficult to me to see that as…

City of Sugar Land releases final draft of Pedestrian and Bicycle Master Plan
By: Rex Knepp      www.examiner.com
The City of Sugar Land, Texas, released the final draft of its Master Plan for bicycles and pedestrians to the public on June 26. The plan is now available for public inspection on the city’s website. A Pedestrian and Bicycle Task Force has been at work on the plan since February, 2012. This is an update to the Plan as suggested by the city’s Comprehensive Mobility Plan, adopted in 2011. Public input to the updated plan was gathered through an online survey and…
On a 250-mile bike ride from here to San Antonio that commences Friday, there are numerous enemies, including fatigue, self-doubt or an unseen rock that could leave several people planted on the pavement. But in contrast to the often competitive world of cycling, it’s nice to have a fellow rider there to pick you up.
“We’re in a big group, and we have to go all the way to San Antonio,†said Kara Urbina, a marathoner-turned-cyclist who will join the…

Sounds like the Texas Transportation Commission doesn't consider the bicycle as a form of transportation.
Another hot one is in the works for today so I was anxious to get started today. It must’ve not been enough because I did not leave until 10:08 but I did get back home by 12:45 before the full heat arrived. As I write this at 3 in the afternoon my weather station shows 99.9 degrees. The SW breeze helps to keep things hot as well. Tomorrow’s forecast calls for 102 and Saturday is now 104. Those could be the first 100+ days of 2013. Starting earlier tomorrow (Friday) would be a good idea.
During my ride the scattered clouds provided no relief but my long sleeve bright orange jersey did. Again I think that long sleeves will be hot but not really. No other bicyclists were out along my route south to Atascocita, Walden and Huffman. I altered the route I planned in my mind before leaving home some. I planned on riding south on W. Lake Houston Parkway to Aerobic Drive and into Walden. There is a fair amount of traffic on W. Lake Houston Parkway especially at FM1960 so I took some side streets to get to the Aerobic Drive intersection and then onto my planned route. So I went a little bit further than I expect at 33.35 miles instead of the 31 or 32 miles. Average speed was a nice 15.6 mph. No thumping bass on today’s route thankfully.
I stopped at the Huffman Chevron for a Sunkist 10 soda water. The breeze was cooling as I sat under the canopy in fact a couple of times I might have felt a chill. The plastic milk crate I sat on had a sag in the top and I thought I was in my recliner at home for a minute.
I am approaching 800 miles for June as I am at 796.07 miles, 137.65 miles for the week and 3235 miles year to date.
Bike Cave sells refurbished bicycles
by Zach Mayer      star.txstate.edu
Transportation woes consisting of constant construction, rerouted buses and an increase in parking fees have led to many students trading in four wheels for two.
Commuter biking has seen an increase in participants over the past school year, offering students a fast and easy way to arrive and navigate campus. Bikes can be an expensive investment for the average student. However, the university-owned Bike Cave is attempting to make bicycles a more viable option for Bobcats strapped for cash.
The cave offers used and refurbished bicycles at discounted rates, acquired through the University Police Department’s bike pick-up program. The program consists of collecting unclaimed bicycles chained to bike racks throughout campus.
The program was implemented for campus beautification, preventing 50 or more abandoned bikes from accumulating each…

Rammell was accepted into the college’s new master of science in Orthotics and Prosthetics program. The program, in the School of Allied Health Sciences at…
